The Beef Between The NBA & China, Explained

Source: HECTOR RETAMAL / Getty The NBA was shoring up what looked to be a fruitful union with China, but now tension between the sports league and the communist nation looks to be growing by the day. After Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of Hong Kong protestors, he set off a flurry of debate regarding free speech and the price of going into business with an entity known for its rigidness. To explain the rift in full, back on October 4, Daryl Morey tweeted out support of the Hong Kong protestors who are combating an extradition bill and other restrictions that infringe on the civil rights of those living in the semi-autonomous region. This tweet came just ahead of the Los Angles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets on the schedule to play in China this week. NBA commissioner Adami Silver offered not one, but two statements to satisfy China’s concerns around Morey’s tweet. Silver did say that he would not find Morey in contempt and won’t limit free speech in the league. Morey’s tweet, which has since been deleted, angered Chinese leaders to the point of upending a potential windfall of money. China’s state-run CCTV has since suspended all NBA pre-season games after issuing a statement. “We’ve noticed NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s response to the inappropriate remarks by Houston Rockets GM Morey. We are strongly unsatisfied and opposed to Adam Silver’s claim of supporting Morey’s rights of having freedom of speech,” CCTV5, a sports channel, said Tuesday on its social media page. “We think any remarks that challenge national sovereignty and social stability are outside the category of freedom of speech.” The Rockets were one of the more popular teams in China, due in part to the team drafting now-retired star Yao Ming number one overall in 2002. Yao, now the chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association, has not made any public comments about the rift despite his history with the Rockets and the NBA. The fallout from Morey’s tweet has been substantial, with community events, ticket sales getting halted, and Chinese celebrities shouting down the Rockets and the NBA in the process. The league, which enjoys a strong following due to the aforementioned Yao’s time with Houston, also has a $1.5 billion deal to stream games with the Tencent media company, with the service blacklisting Rockets games. Further, the CBA is no longer collaborating with the Houston Rockets. Despite the apologies from Silver and from Rockets superstar James Harden, China does not appear satisfied with the team’s effort for repairing the issue. Several Chinese fans were also ousted from pre-season games featuring the Washington Wizards and the Philadelphia 76ers for holding fans that read “Free Hong Kong.” Additionally, a bipartisan group of lawmakers has urged the NBA to pull out of China, including the hosting of a training facility in Xinjiang, where it is thought that around a million Chinese minorities, the Turkic Uyghurs, are being held in so-called “re-education camps.” To underscore the seriousness of things, a CNN reporter attempted to ask Rockets players James Harden and Russell Westbrook if they will continue speaking out on social issues, most especially in the light of Morey’s Hong Kong utterance. An NBA spokesperson shut down the questioning promptly. #NEW : CNN reporter Christina Macfarlane ( @chrissymacCNN ) is quickly shut down by the Houston Rockets' media officer as she tries to ask a question about the NBA's ongoing standoff with China. pic.twitter.com/FP6jgBHUwu — Alex Salvi (@alexsalvinews) October 10, 2019 — Photo: Getty

June Shannon: Being Robbed Blind Amid Crack Cocaine Case?

Seeing her overall health in danger, June Shannon's family staged an intervention on From Not to Hot . During the very special episode, Pumpkin Shannon shared some jarring details about her mother, including how the arrest went down. In addition to details about the crack cocaine arrest, Pumpkin shared the worrisome news that Mama June's bank account is being drained. WeTV aired a From Not to Hot special episode, titled “Road to Intervention.” Back in March, June was arrested alongside troubled boyfriend Geno Doak for possession of crack cocaine. Notably, Geno was also arrested under the accusation of domestic violence towards June, which has made fans very worried for her. Now there is a new cause for concern that many have not considered. During the special, Pumpkin told June that she had been monitoring her bank account, and that June's funds had been deteriorating. The special also included new details about June's arrest. According to Pumpkin, June and Geno “always” argue while they're driving. (Contrary to popular opinion, it's healthy for couples to rarely argue and to never get into fights; if you “always” fight, you should break up) This time, she says, it was particularly bad, and grew worse as they pulled over at a gas station. Though fans had assumed that a witness had dialed 9-1-1, Pumpkin reveals that it was June herself who called the police. So, while Geno was purchasing an energy drink, June apparently called the police not once, but twice — hanging up both times. It turned out that a nearby vehicle just happened to be an unmarked police SUV. The officer within that car is the one who first approached June and Deno. Moriah, a producer for From Not to Hot , points out that June must have been feeling afraid if she dialed emergency services twice. “Something,” Pumpkin says. “Whatever happened caused her to call the cops.” “And she knows what's going on isn't right,” observes June's sister, Joanne “Doe Doe” Shannon. “She just never knows how to get out of it,” she expresses. We then see a flashback to footage of June confessing that there are stories about Geno bringing women to June's house for sex. (Notably, he's accused of paying thousands of dollars for these hookups) Even as June is worried about this, she refers to Geno as being “like her soulmate.” It's clear that the various people in June's life who are not Geno Doak are concerned for her. They fear for her deteriorating health. Producer Moriah even recalls having checked June's hand when she began to lose all sensation in it. They have real concerns about her physical safety around Geno, despite claims that he never physically laid a hand on her during their fight. And quite frankly, they are worried about her finances these days. Whether what's happening is just June spending recklessly or a certain someone dipping into her funds to pay for himself, that's alarming. June is a wealthy woman thanks to her reality career, but reality stars have made many times more than she has and then lost it all in a short time. We hope that June takes a turn for the better in all aspects of her life.

Roger Mathews Defends Jenni Farley: Best Mom EVER!

Well, here’s a development we certainly didn’t anticipate. In recent months, any new news surrounding the corrosive relationship between Jenni Farley and her ex-husband Roger Mathews has been bad news. The trouble started last year when Farley announced her divorce from Mathews . At first, the split seemed to have taken place on amicable — if not mutual — terms. Roger wasn’t happy about the end of his marriage — in fact, he posted several videos in which he begged Jenni to take him back — but it seemed there was no bad blood between the exes. Then the truth came out. Farley filed for a restraining order against Mathews and video that seemed to show Roger physically assaulting Jenni surfaced online. Since then, Jenni has not held back in depicting Roger as a terrible husband and an even worse father. Just last month, she accused Mathews of ditching his kids so he could go party. Now, Roger has posted a video in which he responds to the months and months of negative press — but it’s not at all what we would’ve expected: Roger Mathews: Jenni Farley Is the Best Mom! “Happy Memorial Day everyone,” Mathews began his lengthy caption to the video. “There seems to be an overflow of negative comments both toward me and toward Jenni on many of my posts still. I’m a big boy and a proud supporter of free speech, I can take it,” he continued. “Jenni also has tough skin and can take it however the comments as to who the better parent is, or who spends more time our children are unnecessary.” Yes, it seems Roger is subtly acknowledging the criticism Jenni endured for spending Memorial Day Weekend with her new boyfriend Zack Carpinello . From there, he addresses his past wrongdoing and makes it clear he’s putting his kids’ needs first going forward: “I accept my responsibility in the divide I caused In the eyes of the public but I’ll always post about my children and if we can move past the negativity certainly it wouldn’t be too much to ask for everyone else to,” Mathews wrote. “We both love our children emphatically and always will,” he concluded. “It takes far more effort and energy to be negative than it does to be positive. Enjoy this beautiful day.” The clip itself shows Roger arriving home at night with his children in tow. While it might be possible to interpret the post as a sort of humblebrag — Mathews’ way of touting what a stand-up guy he is by defending his ex as he cares for his kids over the holiday weekend — that doesn’t appear to be the case. Rather, it seems both Roger and Jenni are doing their best to move on from their messy split. Recently, Mathews even referred to Carpinello as “a terrific guy.” Obviously, this is no guarantee that Jenni and Roger won’t lock horns in the months and years to come. But for now, it seems both parties are committed to their children’s well-being, which is good enough for us. View Slideshow: Jenni Farley Boyfriend: Identity… REVEALED!

Eminem Panics Crowd with Gunshot Sound Effects, Isn’t Sorry

Last year, viewers  slammed Eminem's performance . They called him a hack and a has been. Hey, everone's a critic, right? Now, however, he's being criticized for something much more serious — for setting off gunshot noises at his concert. The crowd visibly ducked in fear. And he's getting dragged for making thousands of people think that they were about to die in a hail of bullets. The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, most often known as Bonnaroo, isa  four-day music festival that takes place each summer in Manchester, Tennessee. If you live in Tennessee or any of the surrounding states, this is the festival that your friends who are willing to brave musicals attend each year. Unfortunately, some concert-goers received a serious fright. During his song, “Kill You,” pyrotechnics produced a chillingly realistic gunshot noise. So much so that, as you can see in the video that we included, the crowd was ducking in fear. The video quickly circulated on Twitter, inciting outrage. “Less than a year after Vegas and  @ Eminem  thinks it’s a good idea to blast gun shot sfx onstage at a music festival? Bad call on this headliner  @ bonnaroo . What happened to Radiate Positivity?” The  Las Vegas shooting  that claimed dozens of lives and wounded hundreds took place at the beginning of last October. Many of the victims had attended a Jason Aldean concert. For concert-goers to hear very realistic gunshot noises … it seems very natural for so many of them to instinctively fear for their lives. That doesn't sound like a good time. Eminem is no stranger to controversy. His team responded that these were not actual “gunshot” noises, but pyrotechnic concussion effects featuring a sonic boom. That seems like splitting hairs, but whatever. As always, his diehard fans were eager to jump to his defense. One person took to Twitter to refer to a previous performance of “Kill You.” “You can hear the same sound at the end you idiots. Watch some Eminem performance before going to one.” That's a little harsh. “So you grew up listening to Eminem but you didn’t expect gun shot sounds on his set.” Well, some would argue that it's a different experience when mass shootings are so common. “The gunshot actually makes the performance 10 times better.” We'll take that person's word for it. Some have argued that legislation should curtail this sort of element within a performance. There would be legal precedent. A famous First Amendment exception to free speech is using that speech to do harm, such as shouting “fire” in a crowded theater. Many would say that Eminem setting off such realistic sounding gunshots is the equivalent, and could provoke the crowd to trample each other in fear. After all, actual mass shootings occur multiple times per week, thanks to the widespread and virtually unchecked availability of tools designed for killing. Gunshots in music online or in other media (such as films) is different, as it comes with a visual context and is not usually consumed in massive, dense crowds of people who are standing shoulder-to-shoulder. Are gunshot effects in concerts a threat to concert-goers? Were Eminem's diehard defenders right to criticize fans for freaking out at the sounds of gunshots, since they were expected by many as part of the show? Or were concert-goers right to react instinctively — better safe than sorry — and were critics right to condemn the use of the sounds? Maybe the problem has nothing to do with the audience, the critics, or even Eminem. Maybe living every single day with the knowledge that we could die in a hail of bullets while going to a theater or using mass transit or attending school or a house of worship is the culprit. Perhaps fixing our nation's gun culture and gun epidemic will help to repair some of the other fractures and conflicts in our society. And people won't have any reason to fear attending a concert.

Counting On Promotes New Season Without Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard, Fans Flip Out!

Great news for fans of Counting On: it’s less than a month now until the new season premieres! We’ve got some bad news for fans of Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard though … Back in November, we learned that Derick had been fired from the show after repeatedly making offensive remarks about Jazz Jennings, the star of another show on TLC. Jazz is also a child, by the way. His comments had to do with the fact that Jazz is transgender, which he considers to be “a myth.” “Gender is not fluid,” he tweeted at one point. “It’s ordained by God.” When he got some backlash for that comment, he dug his hole a little deeper, tweeting “I want to be clear. I have nothing against him. I only have issue with the words and definitions being propagated here.” Except he referred to Jazz as a “him,” not a “her,” which is disrespectful and hurtful and there’s no way he didn’t know that. He made those comments in August, and in the following months, he continued to make ignorant statements about Jazz and the transgender community as a whole. Then, in November, he tweeted ” I pity Jazz, 4 those who take advantage of him in order 2 promote their agenda, including the parents who allow these kinds of decisions 2 be made by a child.” “It’s sad that ppl would use a juvenile this way. Again, nothing against him, just unfortunate what’s on tv these days.” He was right about one thing: it is unfortunate what’s on TV these days. Thankfully, TLC helped solve a bit of this problem by firing Derick soon after those statements. Since then, he’s claimed that he wasn’t actually fired , that he just decided that it would be best if he and his family began “heading in a different direction.” *Insert “Sure, Jan” gif here* We have our doubts about that, but it’s clear that whatever happened, Derick and Jill really won’t be appearing on Counting On anymore. The Duggar family’s Facebook page just shared a promotional image from the upcoming season of the show, and we see Jessa, Joy-Anna, and Jinger cozying up to their husbands. Where are Jill and Derick? Trying to think up a way to make a GoFundMe page without getting heaps of backlash for begging fans for money , we guess — whatever it is, it certainly doesn’t look like they’re filming a reality show anymore. It’s nice to see that the Dillards are gone, and that while TLC hesitates to let the Duggar family go completely, they still won’t tolerate the kind of nonsense that Derick spews. But as it turns out, many, many fans of this family disagree with that — and they took to the Facebook post to address this. “Utterly ridiculous that TLC removed Jill & Derick everyone is entitled to free speech we may not agree but still no reason to remove them from the show!!” one person wrote. That’s not how freedom of speech works, but OK, sure. “I wasn’t aware that bullying was defined by disagreeing,” someone else commented. “Such a double standard with anything that is conservative. Such a sad thing. Freedom of speech only applies if your not conservative.” … Seriously, do they not teach this stuff in school anymore? Considering that another person wrote “I think everyone should have freedom of speech and Derick could say what he wants to say and that is freedom of speech…”, we’d wager that they don’t. Yet another Dillard fan complained that “You can believe multiple spouses are fine and get a show on TLC. You can believe it is fine for a boy to live as a girl and have a show on TLC.” “You CANNOT voice your deeply held beliefs based on Biblical principles and remain on a show on TLC.” Another wrote “It is a shame how it is ok to bully anyone Duggar but they can’t have an opinion or a voice. I think the Dillards are awesome and will keep up with them on their social media accounts.” None of these people see an issue with what Derick said? They all think it’s cool that he went after a 16-year-old girl, and they don’t understand why TLC may have had an issue with that? It’s a scary, scary world out there. Bill Maher Uses N-Word on His Show; Twitter Explodes

Why is Bill Maher the worst? Serious question. He insists on making outrageous, offensive statements because … well, we don’t know why, exactly. We just know that it never, ever seems to stop. Just last month Bill made an incest joke about Donald and Ivanka Trump, saying “When he’s about to nuke Finland or something, she’s gonna walk into the bedroom and — ‘Daddy, Daddy. Don’t do it, Daddy.'” He then made a gesture indicating that she’d grab his penis to calm him down. He also once compared Zayn Malik to Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev , which, you know, isn’t great. The point is that he’s known for pushing boundaries at each and every opportunity. And apparently he thought last night’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher was a great chance to be a jackass. His guest last night was Nebraska Senator Bill Sasse, and at one point, Sasse invited Bill to visit Nebraska. “We’d love to have you work in the fields with us,” he told him, smiling. Bill, in his strange little mind, felt the appropriate response was to say “Work in the fielnds? Senator, I’m a house n—–.” Bill Maher Says the N-Word on Real Time His audience had some mixed responses, and understandably so, but Bill was quick to assure them that it was a joke. But Twitter wasn’t convinced. “I for one am shocked that giant racist Bill Maher is in fact a giant racist,” one person tweeted. Another wrote “Bill Maher said the N-word? Wow this totally changes my previously high opinion of that smug Islamophobic misogynistic attention-whore.” One person theorized that “Bill Maher seems way too comfortable using the n-word. I mean, that came naturally to him. That… says a lot. And none of it is good.” And, for the obligatory “hold my beer” joke, someone tweeted “‘Nobody can screw up a career better than me’ Tiger Woods ‘Hold my beer’ Kathy Griffin ‘No, both of you hold my latte’ Bill Maher.” Meanwhile, Ben Sasse himself took to Twitter to discuss the controversy. “I’m a 1st Amendment absolutist,” he began. “Comedians get latitude to cross hard lines.” “But free speech comes with a responsibility to speak up when folks use that word. Me just cringing last night wasn’t good enough.” He wrote that he wished he’d been able to gather his thoughts enough in the moment to say “Hold up, why would you think it’s OK to use that word?” View Slideshow: 14 Celebrity N-Word Scandals “The history of the n-word is an attack on universal human dignity. It’s therefore an attack on the American Creed. Don’t use it.” Too little, too late, or an appropriate response? It’s hard to know when everything is such a great big awful mess.

White Privilege: University Of North Dakota Students Go Unpunished For “Free Speech” Display Of Blackface On Snapchat

Add University of North Dakota to the list of colleges to never send your black sons and daughters to EVER… According to Star Tribune reports : University of North Dakota officials announced late Wednesday that they concluded an investigation into two racially charged Snapchat photos and that they have decided not to punish the students involved. “After a full review of the information, the Code of Student Life and the laws pertaining to each incident, and after consulting with general counsel, [the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities] has concluded that neither incident constitutes a violation of the UND Code of Student Life,” the school wrote in a statement. The outcome was “driven by the Constitutional protection of free speech,” but officials wouldn’t disclose details of their findings. SMH… Free Speech? And not a violation of the UND Code of Student Life? So we guess there are no rules in the Code of Student Life about not being a racist bigots who treat innocent people with zero regard. Both incidents happened on Snapchat in September, just days apart. The first involved three students who allegedly locked a black student out of a dorm and took a picture on her phone with the caption, “locked the black b**ch out.” And the second showed four students posing in blackface with the caption “Black lives matter.” “As part of the conversation with student leaders, we talked about the concept of zero tolerance,” UND President Mark Kennedy said in a statement released following the investigation. “While I appreciate the desire for such a policy, it is unachievable under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.” Kennedy said that he was aware that students and other members of the community were hurt by the incidents and that he personally was “appalled” by the photos. At least somebody is appalled at that school. We don’t understand how the damn school President can be APPALLED and want a zero tolerance policy. Pretty sure plenty of other schools don’t let Free Speech get in the way of acting a damn fool. Snapchat

Fair Or Foul?? Black Texas Teacher Will Lose Her Job After Racist Twitter Rant Tells “Dumb Crackers To Kill Themselves”

Twitter can get you fired ! Black Texas Teacher Will Lose Her Job Over Racist Twitter Rant Via Raw Story reports: Vinita Hegwood has admitted she made the post on the social media site during an online debate over the police shooting of an unarmed teen in Ferguson, Missouri, reported KRLD-TV. “Who the f*ck made you dumb duck *ss crackers think I give a squat f*ck about your opinions on my opinions RE: #Ferguson. Kill yourselves!” the English teacher posted Friday on her personal account. It wasn’t clear who or what she was responding to, but her husband told WFAA-TV there was more to her side of the story. Hegwood deleted the post and her account shortly afterward, but copies were preserved with screen capture images. She did not mention the school district or her job as a teacher, and it’s not clear whether any students or parents followed her account. But officials with the Duncanville School District said Hegwood would be suspended without pay until the school board can vote on her termination. “As an individual, Ms. Vinita Hegwood expressed an opinion on social media that is solely her own,” the district said in a statement. “She used her personal media account to make remarks that are offensive. While everyone has the right to free speech, as a teacher in the district, we believe the comments that are alleged to be made by Ms. Hegwood are absolutely reprehensible and we do not condone it.” A spokeswoman for the district said the post was so plainly offensive that Hegwood left the district “no other option” than to fire the teacher, and at least one parent agreed. “I would say she needs to be a fired,” said parent Lydia Flores. “That’s crazy. The kind of work that she’s doing now, she’s all around different kind of kids and stuff.” Do you think the teacher should be fired??

Sarah Palin on Phil Robertson Scandal: Stop with the Intolerance!

Sarah Palin has already expressed her view on the Phil Robertson scandal that has rocked television’s top-rated reality show. Soon after A&E suspended the Duck Dynasty star, Palin Tweeted that Robertson simply expressed his “personal opinion” and his rights to free speech were being impinged on. That’s a commonly misguided point of view, considering the First Amendment has nothing to do with one suffering professional consequences for one’s words or actions. But Palin went On the Record With Greta Susteren this week and admitted she hasn’t actually read Robertson’s fiery comments regarding homosexuality. Sarah Palin Responds to Phil Robertson Scandal “I haven’t read the article. I don’t know exactly how he said it,” Palin told the host. “What he was doing was in response to a question about a lifestyle he disagrees with, and yet he has said over and over again he doesn’t hate the person engaging in the lifestyle he disagrees with, but in response he was quoting the gospel. “So people who are so insulted and offended by what he said evidently are offended by what he was quoting in the gospel.” Robertson has since added that he’s “not a hater” and that he loves “all humanity.” But he’s also refused to apologize for classifying homosexuality as a sin, ranking “sexual immorality” as number-one on his biblical list of no-no’s. Ironically, Britsol Palin – who had sex and a child out of wedlock – agrees, recently saying A&E’s suspension of Robertson “flies in the face of what makes America great” and referring to the LGBT community as “hypocritical” for its backlash against the star. Sarah Palin, meanwhile concluded her interview with Susteren by saying there’s a lesson we all should take from the Robertson flap: “Thicken your skin and quit being so intolerant of people expressing public opinion and private opinion.” SHOULD A&E CANCEL DUCK DYNASTY IN THE WAKE OF ROBERTSON’S COMMENTS?   Yes. There’s no going back from this low point … No! Bring back Phil and quack on! View Poll » SHOULD ROBERTSON APOLOGIZE?   Yes. I respect his free speech and religious views, but he offended people.
