Add University of North Dakota to the list of colleges to never send your black sons and daughters to EVER… According to Star Tribune reports : University of North Dakota officials announced late Wednesday that they concluded an investigation into two racially charged Snapchat photos and that they have decided not to punish the students involved. “After a full review of the information, the Code of Student Life and the laws pertaining to each incident, and after consulting with general counsel, [the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities] has concluded that neither incident constitutes a violation of the UND Code of Student Life,” the school wrote in a statement. The outcome was “driven by the Constitutional protection of free speech,” but officials wouldn’t disclose details of their findings. SMH… Free Speech? And not a violation of the UND Code of Student Life? So we guess there are no rules in the Code of Student Life about not being a racist bigots who treat innocent people with zero regard. Both incidents happened on Snapchat in September, just days apart. The first involved three students who allegedly locked a black student out of a dorm and took a picture on her phone with the caption, “locked the black b**ch out.” And the second showed four students posing in blackface with the caption “Black lives matter.” “As part of the conversation with student leaders, we talked about the concept of zero tolerance,” UND President Mark Kennedy said in a statement released following the investigation. “While I appreciate the desire for such a policy, it is unachievable under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.” Kennedy said that he was aware that students and other members of the community were hurt by the incidents and that he personally was “appalled” by the photos. At least somebody is appalled at that school. We don’t understand how the damn school President can be APPALLED and want a zero tolerance policy. Pretty sure plenty of other schools don’t let Free Speech get in the way of acting a damn fool. Snapchat

North Dakota Legalizes Weaponized Drones For Police Use As if it isn’t terrible enough that drone-driven weapons are a thing…but now, police are able to use this technology to remote-control situations that they feel require weaponized force — at least in one state. Via Independent : Armed drones could be used by police in the US state of North Dakota after local lawmakers legalised their use. While they will be limited to “less than lethal” weapons, tear gas, tasers, rubber bullets and pepper spray could all be used in theory by the remote controlled flying machines. In a classic case of unintended consequences, the original sponsor, Republican state representative Rick Becker said he was unhappy with the way legislation turned out. His original intention was to prevent law enforcement officials from using the unmanned aerial vehicles from conducting surveillance on private property without a warrant. “In my opinion there should be a nice, red line: Drones should not be weaponised,” he said. The original draft of the House Bill 1328 said: “A state agency may not authorize the use of, including granting a permit to use, an unmanned aircraft armed with any lethal or non-lethal weapons, including firearms, pepper spray, bean bag guns, mace, and sound-based weapons.” However, the state’s police union amended the Bill, limiting the ban to only lethal weapons, meaning that sounds cannons or rubber bullets could be used on police drones, according to The Daily Beast. Police already get way too trigger happy in some situations out here. Imagine how many more issues could come about when they can remote control their weapons from the sky… Creative Commons

From the 1880s into the 1960s, a majority of American states enforced segregation through “Jim Crow” laws (so called after a black character in minstrel shows). From Delaware to California, and from North Dakota to Texas, many states (and cities, too) could impose legal punishments on people for consorting with members of another race. The […]

In a matter of days, A.J. Clemente has gone from reporting the news to being the news. The North Dakota anchor was fired after one broadcast due to an incident in which he uttered back-to-back curse words in his first moments on air. He was subsequently the subject of a David Letterman Top 10 list and he appeared this morning on Today . A.J. Clemente Curses on Air Clemente told Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie that watching the snafu was “gut-wrenching” and he makes no excuses for what happened. “It’s inexcusable, first, to even say those words,” he said. “Fireball shot came right out of my mouth.” A.J. also understands why he is now out of a job. “I fully expected that they would fire me,” he said. “I even called my news director after and apologized again. They did [what they had to do]. No animosity at all.” Clemente will be a guest on The Late Show this evening, and from there? He says he doesn’t have any exact professional plans. “I’m looking forward, moving forward,” he told the hosts. “You got to have a tough skin in this business, and it’s good to laugh at yourself.” Sounds like advice Lauer could benefit from as well.
