Mac Miller Introduces Bonnaroo To Pink Slime

Pittsburgh rapper performs ‘On a Roll’ from his new Pharrell collaboration EP during final night of the Tennessee music festival. By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Rya Backer Mac Miller performs at Bonnaroo on Sunday Photo: Erika Goldring/WireImage Mac Miller hit Manchester, Tennessee, on Sunday for the final round of performances at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival , treating fans to a few of his biggest mixtape hits and giving the first U.S. performance of his Pharrell collaboration “On A Roll.” The Pittsburgh rapper tackled hits like “Donald Trump” and a slew of new material from his Macadelic mixtape , including the Cam’ron-featured “Ignorant” and “Angels.” Mac also decided that Bonnaroo was the perfect place to give the first live performance of his brand-new single “On a Roll,” the first track released from Pink Slime, his collaboration EP with Pharrell. And, being that it was a music festival, Mac kept energy levels up within the vast crowd by mixing things up and paying tribute to a few legendary musicians. He hosted a sing-a-long to Bob Marley and covered Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” in addition to dropping a couple tracks from Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. into his set. Before his set, Mac played a little coy about his performance backstage, telling MTV News he’d just be happy if the crowd knew his songs. “I picture that I’m gonna go out there and no one’s gonna know who I am, so that probably will suck,” he said. “But if people do know who I am, that will be tight.” How many surprises did he have planned for the set? “Zero,” he joked. “I couldn’t bring my video screen, I don’t think, but I think [maybe] I could’ve because Skrillex brought his spaceship,” he wondered out loud. “So I could’ve definitely brought my video screens, but we’re just gonna do a cool show and it’s just about trying to turn tens of thousands of people into an intimate crowd.” Related Videos Bonnaroo 2012 Gets The Party Started Related Photos 2012 Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival Related Artists Mac Miller

Eminem, Lil Wayne Named ‘Gods Of Rock’ By GQ

Hip-hop duo featured on November cover alongside Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. By Rob Markman Eminem, Keith Richards and Lil Wayne on cover of GQ magazine Photo: Mark Seliger/ GQ Eminem might rap for a living, but when you examine his career trajectory, it reads more rock star than hip-hop heavyweight. No surprise, then, that GQ magazine named him a God of Rock and placed him alongside Keith Richards and Lil Wayne on their November cover. Em and Lil Wayne were shot for the cover at the 2011 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in June, while the Rolling Stones guitarist was shot separately in New York. In a portfolio consisting of 43 such Gods of Rock, Eminem’s story and photographs particularly stand out. In his feature, the 39-year old rhyme icon talked about his downward-spiraling addiction, which began with his 2000 album The Marshall Mathers LP and peaked during the recording of his fourth album Encore. “Five or six songs leaked from the original version of Encore, ” Em told GQ Senior Editor Will Welch in an interview. “So I had to go in and make new songs to replace them. In my head, I was pissed off: ‘Oh well. Songs leaked. F— it. I’m just going to take a bunch of f—ing pills and go in there and have a party with myself.’ I’m sure the more pills I took, the goofier I got.” The multiplatinum rapper now embraces his sobriety and utilizes his natural quirks to fuel his music. “The same way that his brain was wired that gave him problems with substances also sort of makes him a virtuoso,” Welch told MTV News. “I’ve realized that the way I am helps with the music. Sporadic thoughts will pop into my head and I’ll have to go write something down, and the next thing you know, I’ve written a whole song in an hour,” Em said in the magazine. “But sometimes it sucks, and I wish I was wired like a regular person and could go have a f—in’ drink. But that’s the biggest thing about addiction: When you realize that you cannot — for f—‘s sake , you can not — f— around with nothing ever again.” Em, however, is just one of several survivors GQ spotlights in a special portfolio, which was shot by Mark Seliger. Metallica, Robert Plant, Beck and Erykah Badu also appear. As for the three cover subjects, GQ wanted to pick prime examples of musical perseverance. “We wanted to answer the question: Who are the living legends out there that have survived against all adversity?” Welch explained. “It has to be people who are still incredibly influential. It can’t be somebody who has been through hell and back and reached a zenith in their career in 1976 and isn’t still relevant and isn’t still making music.” GQ ‘s November 2011 issue goes on sale October 25 nationwide.

Wiz Khalifa Squashes Waka Flocka Flame Beef Rumors

After wowing Bonnaroo crowd on Saturday, Wiz shut down gossip, telling MTV News, ‘Me and Waka and are cool.’ By James Montgomery Wiz Khalifa at Bonnaroo 2011 Photo: Rob Loud/ Getty Images MANCHESTER, Tennessee – Wiz Khalifa’s Saturday evening set at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival was, by his own admission, probably the biggest show he’s played since bursting onto the scene last year. And feeding upon the vibes of the crowd, he delivered a set that was as loose and lively as it was hit-packed and hungry. “I was feeling the energy the whole time, and I’ve been doing a lot of shows and growing as a performer and an artist, so I just wanted to build on all that,” he told MTV News following the performance. “Being a top act on such a huge stage in front of so many people, it’s a great starting point for my career, because a lot of people work their whole careers and then get here.” Of course, though he was still basking in the afterglow of his Bonnaroo set, Wiz also felt the need to address an issue that (supposedly) occurred at another of his big-stage shows: rumors of a backstage altercation with Waka Flocka Flame at Hot 97’s Summer Jam in New York earlier this month. “Yeah, nothing happened backstage,” Khalifa said. “It’s always something; making up some rumor about something happening with me backstage during somebody’s set, but nothing happened. Me and Waka and are cool. That’s just people trying to promote negativity.” And to hear Wiz tell it, there’s been a whole lot of that negativity going on in recent months. But, as he continues on the upswing of his young career, he’s not going to let any of it get him down. After all, there will be plenty more shows like Bonnaroo on the horizon, and he prefers to focus on that. “There’s just so much fake sh– going on. Like, people will buy into what’s fake. According to people, this isn’t my Rolex, you know?” he said. “But that’s just what mugs like to think and what they like to talk about, but the reality of the situation is everything’s under control. And this is my Rolex. That I bought.” Did you catch Wiz’s set at Bonnaroo? Share your reviews in the comments! Exclusive: Mannie Fresh Explains Lil Wayne Reunion At Bonnaroo

Wayne embraced his former Cash Money mate onstage during his Friday night set. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Ade Mangum Mannie Fresh at Bonnaroo 2011 Photo: MTV News MANCHESTER, Tennessee – One of the highlights of Lil Wayne’s headlining set at Bonnaroo on Friday – at least to the folks in attendance who’ve followed Weezy’s career since his Hot Boys days – was the moment when he brought Cash Money founding father Mannie Fresh onstage, ending a longtime separation that had existed since 2005, when Fresh parted ways with Birdman and the label under decidedly acrimonious conditions. When the two embraced onstage, it was symbolic in more ways than one: Not only did it show that Mannie and Wayne had never really been at odds, but it was a rather important passing of the torch too. And Fresh told MTV News as much, earlier in the day on Friday, when he said that the two really never been rivals … and hinted at bigger things to come later in the evening. “It’s a possibility. Like I said, there’s no beef. No animosity,” Fresh said. “I got a great deal of respect for Wayne. You know, from where he started to where he at right now. He’s on top of his game. So it’s a possibility [we could reunite]. You never know.” And as anyone who was in attendance for Wayne’s set could attest, that possibility definitely became a reality. For his part, Fresh wouldn’t speak about just how the pair settled their differences, but now that they’ve gone public with their reunion, could the duo could get back to their collaborative ways? It’s something Fresh isn’t about to write off. “That would be hot,” he said. “But, you know, my half, I’m there. We’re going to leave the rest of it on him, you know what I’m saying?” Would you like to see Wayne reconnect with Mannie Fresh in the studio? Tell us in the comments! Eminem Sets Off Musical Fireworks At Bonnaroo

The rapper thrilled fans with a hard-hitting, hit-packed headlining set on Saturday. By James Montgomery Eminem performs at Bonnaroo 2011 Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images MANCHESTER, Tennessee – By the time Eminem strode onstage Saturday night at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, 80,000 sun-stroked fans had already witnessed workmanlike sets by everyone from Mumford & Sons and the Black Keys to Bootsy Collins and Buffalo Springfield. So it was no surprise that, when it came time for Em to do his thing, he decided to follow in that same model, eschewing flash and dash in favor of good olfashioned sweat. And sure, his headlining set did feature booming pyro, a massive (and frequently skull-filled) video screen, and some actual fireworks, but, in keeping with Bonnaroo tradition, what stood out the most about Em’s performance was the sheer tenacity with which he attacked it. This wasn’t so much a performance as it was an exercise in determination; a focused, fierce 90-odd minutes of grit and guile. It’s the same renewed vigor Eminem has displayed on his most-recent efforts, not only his massive Recovery album, but also the upcoming, back-to-basics Bad Meets Evil team up with Royce Da 5’9.” Much like Friday night’s headliner, Lil Wayne , the man simply knows how to work. And that was evident from the get-go on Saturday night. Dressed in a black hoodie, Bad Meets Evil T-shirt and camo shorts, Em wasted no time ripping into his catalog, kicking off with “Won’t Back Down” and following it up with “3 a.m.,” both of which hit hard thanks to his machine-gun cadence and the addition of a positively whomping live band. The impact wasn’t lessened when his mic cut out during the next song, “White Trash Party,” as Em powered through the mishap and earned the cheers of the tens of thousands who packed in to see him. Flanked by D12 member (and hype man) Mr. Porter (a.k.a. Kon Artis), Eminem stalked the stage and didn’t come up for air, tearing through songs like “Kill You,” “So Bad” and “Cleanin’ Out My Closet” before finally disappearing backstage for a moment while Porter introduced the masses to “the newest member of Shady Records,” the aforementioned Royce Da 5’9.” Em was back before the crowd could stop cheering, and the pair gave them a taste of what they can expect on the upcoming Hell: The Sequel EP: the muscular “Fast Lane” and the Bruno-Mars assisted “Lighters,” which, not surprisingly, had everyone thrusting theirs skyward. Then Em shifted the focus back to his solo hits (“Stan,” “Toy Soldiers”) and some of his high-profile guest spots (“Airplanes, Part II” and, thankfully, “Forever”), crouching low and delivering his verses with ferocity. He got deep on “Love the Way You Lie” and downright celebratory on “Crack a Bottle.” Then, in a nod to his past, shot through three of his earliest hits (“My Name Is,” “The Real Slim Shady” and “Without Me”) in rapid-fire succession. The crowd, which, for the majority of his set, had been firmly poised on the brink, positively lost their collective minds at the inclusion of those classics, and seizing the momentum, Eminem closed his set with a rattling version of “Not Afraid.” After a brief rest (and several minutes of the crowd chanting his name), Em reappeared to cap the night off with “Lose Yourself,” which seemed even more anthemic given the magnitude of his set. And then, as the crowd screamed their approval, he thanked them and thrust his hand in the air, looking understandably exhausted but also unbelievably happy. And, in apparent appreciation to his efforts, the Bonnaroo folks kicked off a massive fireworks display, one that boomed in the distance and was a pretty fitting tribute to what we had all just witnessed. Only Eminem’s musical fireworks were better. Were you at Bonnaroo? Share your reviews in the comments! Florence And The Machine Reveal Inspirations Behind New Album

Florence Welch talks fame and ghostly visits before her Bonnaroo set on Friday. By James Montgomery Florence Welch of Florence and the Machines performs during the 2011 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival Photo: Erika Goldring/WireImage MANCHESTER, Tennessee — When Florence Welch began writing the songs that would become her breakout Lungs album, she was just 18 years old and had no idea of what lay ahead of her. Now, as she begins putting the finishing touches on the follow up to that album — working in the iconic Abbey Road studios — she finds herself a few years older, but oddly enough, in much the same position. “It’s nearly finished, but, of course, that’s the hardest part for me, because once it’s finished, you have to share it with others,” she told MTV News on Thursday before her sundown set at Bonnaroo . “So, I’ve found myself obsessing over the way I’ve sung one little word, and wanting to go back and do it over again. I’m going to try and hold onto it as long as possible.” While Welch admits the album is in its final stages, she still has a difficult time describing exactly what it sounds like. But from what she does say, it seems like the still-untitled effort won’t sound like Lungs. “I wrote so much of my first album at different times and places — some songs when I was 18, some when I was 21 — so there are so many pieces and styles on it,” she said. “And that’s one of the things I love about it, but for my new record, I wanted to do things differently. It’s why I worked with one producer in one studio. I want to tie all those things together … in one piece, if possible.” The new album also reflects everything that’s happened to her on her rather rapid ascent to fame. But she’s also taking inspiration from far different, far more ethereal places, too. “There’s a song on it that’s inspired by a visit [from] my dead grandmother — like, I had really, really vivid dream about her and, um, she was giving me advice in this dream,” she said. “And it was really emotional, and I woke up crying. And there’s one song that’s inspired by that experience.” Stick with MTV News for show reports and interviews from Bonnaroo 2011 all weekend long. Eminem, Rihanna To Co-Headline U.K.’s V Festival

The ‘Love the Way You Lie’ duo will share the stage at the event’s two sites this August. By D.L. Chandler Eminem and Rihanna Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images After weeks of speculation, organizers for the United Kingdom’s annual V Festival have revealed the 2011 list of featured performers, which includes two Grammy-winning headliners from across the pond. Eminem and hit “Love the Way You Lie” duet partner, Rihanna , will be headlining acts for the popular summer concert event on August 20 in Weston Park. Arctic Monkeys and Plan B, meanwhile, will serve as co-headliners that day at a sister concert held simultaneously at nearby Hylands Park. On August 21, the two sets of headlining acts switch stages and hold another concurrent concert — a hallmark of the festival. Em’s involvement in the event had been rumored for weeks, but without any solid confirmation that the Detroit bad boy would appear. Rihanna’s inclusion in the concerts also had been questionable, but organizers worked hard to secure the singer. Eminem’s star has been aglow of late, with the popular MC basking in the success of his seventh studio effort Recovery , which helped him snag the coveted Rap Album of the Year Grammy award for a second year in a row. Slim Shady’s Grammy-winning co-star Rihanna — who is a record-setting female solo artist for sales in the U.K. — has had another successful year. The Barbadian pop artist’s fifth studio release, Loud , has sold more than 1 million copies so far. Eminem and Rihanna will be joined by a few of their stateside pals at the V Festival, along with many notable U.K. acts. Some of the other artists slated to play the festival include “Black and Yellow” star Wiz Khalifa, pop singer Bruno Mars, rock legends Duran Duran, DJ/producer Mark Ronson and grime rapper Dizzee Rascal. The U.K. event is not the only big festival that Eminem is set to headline this year. In June, the rap star will be among the featured acts at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. Related Artists Eminem Rihanna

Manchester Orchestra Prepare For Bonnaroo, Hair-Raising New Album

‘I really want hair to be standing up on your arms for the whole record,’ frontman Andy Hull says of next effort. By James Montgomery Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull Photo: MTV News Manchester Orchestra main man Andy Hull is a pretty hirsute dude. So when he starts talking about recording a new album and he mentions that his main goal is to make the listener’s hair stand straight up, well, then you know he means business. “We’re gonna record a new record in June. It’s going to be different, really beautiful and very wide — not wide stylistically, more like it’s gonna be a broad and big,” Hull told MTV News. “I really want hair to be standing up on your arms for the whole record — that’s kind of my goal.” And while the Orchestra are still riding high on the success of last year’s Mean Everything to Nothing — which bowed at #37 on the Billboard albums chart, earned them tons of critical acclaim and even generated a modest radio hit (“I’ve Got Friends”) — they’re already working on the follow-up. That’s just the way they tend to operate. “We’ve never been afraid of hard work,” Hull smiled. But a new album isn’t the only thing they’ve got lined up for June. They’ve just been confirmed to appear at the 2010 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival , taking place that same month in Manchester, Tennessee. Joining them are some of the biggest names in the game (Jay-Z, Dave Matthews Band, Weezer), but they’re not nervous. After all, they’ve learned from some of the best — and weirdest — bands out there. “You tour with, like, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Kings of Leon for three months, you just have to turn up and become a rock band. And we were very influenced by that and a bunch of bands that we were able to tour with,” Hull said. “We were able to tour with weirder bands, like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! and play with Okkervil River, where Clap Your Hands are, like, this kind of weird music and the Okkervil is beautiful folk music, so we got to tour with a bunch of awesome bands and kind of get to know all these people, and we’re definitely influenced by it.” Related Artists Manchester Orchestra
