‘Harold & Kumar’ Stars Promise ‘Enhanced Nudity’ In ‘3D Christmas’

‘The movie is in 3-D because the ‘Jersey Shore’ is in 3-D,’ Kal Penn jokes to MTV News in our Fall Movie Preview. By Eric Ditzian Kal Penn and John Cho in “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” Photo: New Line Cinema Last summer, MTV News got a very special, very twisted look at ” A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas ,” the third installment of Kal Penn and John Cho’s herbaceous buddy-comedy franchise, when we popped by the Detroit set. We can’t yet show you much of what we saw that day, but as part of our Fall Movie Preview, we’re rolling out a tasty nugget of our interview with Penn and Cho. In between cracking jokes about ’80s comedies, MTV programming and potential celebrity cameos, the duo let us know what we can expect when the new film, which focuses on the two estranged friends reuniting during the holidays, hits theaters November 4. Click for exclusive photos from Fall’s biggest flicks. MTV : So why is this movie in 3-D? Kal Penn : The movie is in 3-D because the “Jersey Shore” is in 3-D. John Cho : “Avatar” was in 3-D. I’m not in competition with “Avatar.” I’m not in competition with James Cameron. He does his thing. We do our thing. He makes cartoons. I understand he had a good year. I’m just saying, the technology isn’t his. Penn : I’m just psyched because “Goonies” was in 3-D and that’s why this is in 3-D. You’ve never seen “Goonies.” Cho : I’ve never seen “Goonies.” Penn : That is so crazy to me! That’s so nuts to me, dude. It’s egregious that you haven’t watched “Goonies.” MTV : Can we expect 3-D nakedness? Penn : Listen, you’re going to see some 3-Deeez nuts. [ Sings to the tune of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s “Deez Nuuuts” ] Cho : There’s enhanced nudity. Penn : Very ma ture, the way you’re saying that. Enhanced nudity. This is not the NPR interview; this is MTV. They just got done watching Snooki get arrested. You do not have to say anything other than “3-D nuts.” MTV : Have you had time to enjoy Detroit? Cho : I’ve been buying cars. I’ve got a lot of cash, and I’m spending it on automobiles. Lots of ’97 Pontiac Firebirds. Lot of Ford Tauruses. Penn : I like shooting in Detroit. If you have not been to Detroit, you should come. People are super friendly. There are a lot of beautiful buildings, and sadly many of them are abandoned. Hopefully the city bounces back. Look at our first film: I loved shooting in Toronto, but it was still a bummer that we had to leave the United States to shoot a quintessential American road-trip comedy. Cho : Also, Toronto had so many foreigners. Penn : We were the foreigners. Toronto is in a different country. Cho : No, we’re Americans. MTV : Why have Harold and Kumar grown apart? Cho : They’re at different times in their lives. Kumar is looking for a way to stay in his younger existence, and Harold is artificially trying to be more mature and is choosing an excessively old mature friend. MTV : What can we expect in terms of romance? Penn : When the last film left off, Kumar and Vanessa were obviously very much together. Over the next six years, Vanessa moved into Kumar’s apartment. They continued their relationship. It was moving down the road toward marriage. And then Kumar lost his job. He couldn’t stop smoking weed. It wasn’t as much the weed as him completely latching on to still being frivolous and still being down for whatever and not taking Vanessa seriously and taking her for granted. So slowly after he lost Harold to Maria, he kind of grew resentful of the notion that if his best friend could go off and choose this woman over him, then maybe everyone was just out to get him. He drifted further apart from Vanessa. That’s where we pick up now. MTV : Besides Neil Patrick Harris, what celebrity cameos are in the works? Penn : Patton Oswalt, Tom Lennon, Paula Abdul, Snooki and Mayor Koch. From “Abduction” to “Muppets, “Moneyball” to “Breaking Dawn,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest upcoming flicks in our 2011 Fall Movie Preview. OK Go, My Morning Jacket Remember 1991: When Rock Rocked

Fugazi’s Steady Diet of Nothing and the Jesus Lizard’s Goat join list of great albums celebrating their 20th anniversary. By James Montgomery Fugazi’s Steady Diet of Nothing Photo: Dischord Records With the 20th anniversary of Nirvana ‘s massive Nevermind just a few short weeks away, much attention is being paid to rock’s last great era: 1991, a year that was overflowing with important, iconic (and, in some cases, overlooked) albums from bands both big and small. In a lot of ways, it was the year rock truly rocked, and so, to celebrate that fact, MTV News has been asking some of today’s biggest acts to remember their favorites form that truly epic year. So far, we’ve looked back at Metallica’s Black Album, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Dinosaur Jr.’s Green Mind, My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless , Slint’s Spiderland, Pearl Jam’s Ten and Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger. Today, we’re turning our attention to Fugazi ‘s Steady Diet of Nothing and the Jesus Lizard ‘s Goat — two lesser-known (yet equally important) gems, that are fondly remembered by some high-profile fans. Fugazi, Steady Diet of Nothing It starts ominous, like the buzz emanating from a disturbed hornet’s nest (“Exit Only”) and ends frothing and growling, like a chained Doberman (“KYEO”), yet in between, the second studio album from Washington, D.C., stalwarts Fugazi is a precise, downright surgical exercise in rhythms, interwoven bass and guitars, and — dare we say it — melody. Most noted for its sparse production (which highlighted the lockstep team of bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty) and its overtly political tone (“Dear Justice Letter” was inspired by the departure of liberal judge William J. Brennan from the Supreme Court), Steady Diet of Nothing set the blueprint for the next 10 years of the band’s exploits. It also remains a testament to the coiled, colossal power of, above all things, restraint. As Remembered by Damian Kulash, OK Go : “I grew up in Washington, D.C., and Fugazi was everything. Ian MacKaye, Fugazi, Dischord Records, they were like the Holy Trinity, they were the apostles, they were the entire religion of D.C. Everyone worshipped them, and when Steady Diet of Nothing came out … Repeater was the first record I had gotten by Fugazi, and Steady Diet was the first one that I could wait for, I could feel it coming out. It was so amazing, it was so musical, it was so timely, it was unlike anything else that was out there. I mean, everything Fugazi did seemed like it was coming out of the earth, you know? Like, the rest of the music in the world was all this crappy, commercial stuff, and they were this. They could not be ignored. The politics, the way they ran D.C., I mean, it was unbelievable. All shows were five bucks, all shows were all ages, it was incredible. I mean, when I was 15, I walked up to Ian MacKaye’s house and said, ‘Could I borrow some money to start a record label?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ Isn’t that crazy? Unbelievable.” The Jesus Lizard, Goat The pounding, primal, pretty-effed-up second album from one of alt-rock’s most disturbed (and sorta disturbing) bands, Goat is arguably the best of the Jesus Lizard’s many team-ups with producer Steve Albini — a claustrophobic, eternally sludgy thing that’s nearly stripped to the core. Still, it packs a punch, thanks in no small part to David Yow’s near-patented wild-man yowls, Duane Denison’s wobbling, skuzzy guitars, and the downward-spiraling rhythm section of David Wm. Sims and Mac McNeilly. After two more albums on Touch and Go, the Lizard would inexplicably make the leap to Capitol Records in 1996, a stint that lasted until 1999. They called it quits soon after, but to this day, the Jesus Lizard remain an important intersection of art-damaged noise and rock. As Remembered by Patrick Hallahan, My Morning Jacket : “It’s one of the best albums of all time. I think, if I’m not mistaken, it starts off with ‘Then Comes Dudley,’ ‘Mouthbreather,’ just so great. I’ll never forget the first Jesus Lizard concert I ever went to, they were the tightest rhythm section I’d ever seen, and then they had this f—ing amazing jazz guitarist playing on top of this rhythm section. Ear X-Tacy, that’s the name of our music store in Louisville, and I was there when it came out. The Jesus Lizard, Goat. One of the best accomplishments of 1991, and there were a whole lot of them that year.” Share your favorite memories of 1991’s seminal albums in the comments below! “Holdin On To Black Metal” is far and away the best jam on My Morning Jacket’s new Circuital, so it stands to reason that it would be the first track from the album to get a big video. Josh Baze Blazing A Trail From Brooklyn To Hollywood

MC talks about his upcoming EP and why Hype Williams signed on to direct his debut video for ‘We Made It,’ in Mixtape Daily. By Steven Roberts Josh Baze Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Josh Baze The name Josh Baze may not ring any bells. He’s not attached to any big-time artists or an underground movement, nor does he have the backing of a major label. But in spite of his low profile, the Brooklyn-born MC is gearing up for the release of the Hype Williams-directed video for his first official single, “We Made It.” The collabo with Hype puts Baze in good company, as Williams has directed debut videos for Missy Elliott, the Wu-Tang Clan and Busta Rhymes, among others. And while only time will tell if Baze will be one day be mentioned in the same breath as those stars, he sure hopes so. The 21-year-old told Mixtape Daily he started rapping in his teens and always had a passion for the mic. “I started off on the desks in my elementary school. I started getting into the studio around 16. After I learned how to do a track, and I just laid down my first 16, it was a wrap,” Baze said. “My dad was a DJ, so just having him around and watching music get built inside of my house, it was a blessing, because I got to learn so much, man.” Baze ( rhymes with haze ) grew up listening to and idolizing fellow Brooklyn MCs the Notorious B.I.G and Jay-Z because of their ability to lyrically depict their neighborhoods and day-to-day struggles. He hopes to do the same on his debut EP, which is aptly titled The EP and slated to drop in September. ” The EP is basically 21 years of my life. It’s basically about stories of relationships, ex-girlfriends, family members; the good, the bad, the ugly, whatever,” Baze explained. “I just really want to give people a journey of where I came from, which is Brooklyn all the way to Hollywood.” Baze linked up with Hype after the rapper’s manager, Griffin Guess, played the famed director some of his music, piquing Williams’ interest. “I grew up watching this guy direct and make dreams, so it was really inspiring just to have him shoot my first video. It’s a blessing to have a hip-hop pioneer direct my first video, and he’s so cool and humble,” Baze said. “It’s not even just as a director but as a real friend, and just building that relationship conquered a lot.” Baze promised the album will feature some unique sounds, which isn’t surprising considering he’s working with acts like Jamie Foxx and deadmau5. Katy Perry, Lil Wayne, U2 Among Summer’s Biggest Tours

Experts also see big jaunts for Taylor Swift, Blink-182, Foo Fighters and Avett Brothers. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Summer is the time to kick back at the pool, work on that tan and blast your favorite sprinkler jams , but it’s also the season to pack into your Nissan Cube and tromp down to the local amphitheater or arena to check out shows by the likes of Katy Perry , Lil Wayne , Foo Fighters , Rihanna , Taylor Swift , Britney Spears and My Morning Jacket . Just like movie studios roll out the big guns around the holidays in time to take a shot at Oscar gold, music stars know that summer is the best time to separate fans from their hard-earned babysitting and lifeguarding money. That’s why local venues are stuffed up with a bumper crop of big shows packing enough pyro and lasers to take out an invading alien army in an effort to get the most butts in seats. We asked a panel of experts to make their picks for the summer’s hottest ticket, and like Oscar voters, they all had their favorites, but there was one thing they could all agree on: Taylor Swift and veteran rockers U2 are going to clean house this summer. “I think in terms of demand and crossing over from theaters to arenas, Katy Perry is doing it right,” said Dave Brooks, senior writer for live-entertainment trade magazine Venues Today. Between her many TV appearances, magazine covers and record-setting string of hit singles from Teenage Dream, Brooks said Perry is doing everything right and creating great demand for an eye-popping extravaganza that is “pulling out all the stops.” Us Weekly senior music editor Ian Drew agreed, saying Perry’s tour is sure to entertain. “[It’s a] colorful, all-out spectacle,” he said of the cotton-candy-smelling outing . “Remember that Lady Gaga is not out on the road this summer, so there’s going to be no competition. … The tour is an all-out spectacle. It’s basically like going to a massive Broadway show.” Another artist who seems to have solved the live-headliner puzzle fairly quickly is Swift, who Brooks said has endeared herself to the industry and to fans through her professionalism, dedication and prodigious talent. “She moves tickets really quickly, and her two L.A. shows sold out right away and they added two more,” he said, noting that Swift does so well because she appeals to a wide audience that ranges from tween girls to adult women. Blogger Perez Hilton’s pick to click was Swift, whom he predicted would have the most buzzed-about tour by summer’s end. “Just because she is performing so many shows, [playing] sold-out arenas, and to her credit, no one else that is a female artist is doing this right now … playing stadiums in America … that is major.” It remains to be seen how some early cancellations due to illness will affect the rest of Swift’s outing. With such heavy-hitting rap stars as Jay-Z, Kanye West and an incarcerated T.I. absent from the touring scene (outside of spot festival dates), Brooks said hard-touring Lil Wayne once again has the lane to himself and should keep packing them in for his never-ending I Am Still Music Tour . Brooks wasn’t sure how the Britney Spears/ Nicki Minaj tour was going to pan out, noting that advance ticket numbers didn’t look that impressive and that good seats could still be found on Groupon just days before a number of the dates for the two divas. Drew said that despite the lack of buzz, Britney loyalists will still come out because of their love for everything Brit and the allure of Minaj. “It’s just gonna be two very big divas on the charts now coming together in one awesome show,” he said. When it comes to the summer swing by reunited punk-poppers Blink-182 , who will be playing a string of dates with goth-pop icons My Chemical Romance, Brooks said the early signs are good. He suspected the pairing could introduce a new generation to the spiky Blink sound, was willing to bet that rock icons Foo Fighters would continue to do solid business and had a good feeling about rising softer rockers Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver. His pick to keep an eye on was the Avett Brothers, the North Carolina sibling honky-tonkin’ bluegrass band, who have developed a really solid, devoted road following and are about to play a sold-out show at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado on Saturday. Pollstar editor in chief Gary Bongiovanni said there was no doubt that U2’s massive 360 Tour — already expected to be the highest-grossing of all time when it wraps — will be the summer’s biggest hit, despite the fact that it will end in the middle of beach season on July 23. He said early numbers also indicate that Wiz Khalifa’s theater and small outdoor venue tour is looking very strong and he expects solid, but not blockbuster, numbers for the NKOTBSB boy-band package . Though it has only 12 dates remaining, Bongiovanni said Dave Matthews Band’s Caravan — what he called a “portable festival” — promises to do solid business with three-night stands in New York, Chicago and Washington state, featuring an eclectic lineup that includes the Flaming Lips, Ray LaMontagne, Amos Lee, Moe, Kid Cudi, De La Soul, Soja, the Roots, Dispatch, O.A.R., the Head and the Heart and Gogol Bordello. When it comes to new-breed rock bands like Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket, Bongiovanni said it all depends on pricing the tickets right. “I think pricing will be more in tune with the economic times this year,” he said. “Everyone played it conservative in 2009 and then they pushed the envelope in 2010 and they saw serious pushback.” As for his pick to watch, Bongiovanni said not to underestimate the pull of dance-music stars like Ti

Bonnaroo Crowds Brave ‘Epically Hot’ Temperatures

Fans tell MTV News they’re drinking water, slathering on sunscreen and frequenting the air-conditioned comedy tent. By James Montgomery A general view of the atmosphere during Bonnaroo 2011 Photo: FilmMagic/FilmMagic MANCHESTER, Tennessee – Temperatures nearly touched triple digits at Bonnaroo on Friday (June 10), scorching the grounds of the 700-acre farm the fest calls home and forcing the 80,000 in attendance to get creative when it came to beating the heat. Concertgoers hung portable fans around their necks, clutched squirt-guns and paper fans, hid beneath umbrellas and guzzled water from tubes in their CamelBaks. And when all else failed, they stripped down and showered in Bonnaroo’s famed Centeroo fountain. Anything to keep cool. “Pretty much we’ve been going back and forth to the fountain all day, trying to cool off that way,” concertgoer Ryan Smith told MTV News. “Everyone’s pretty chill and really nice about sharing space in there.” By midday, the water flowing from the fountain had started to turn brown (an annual occurrence at the fest, regardless of the temperature), but that didn’t stop fans from frolicking in it. And as the crowd in and around the fountain continued to swell, some were forced to abandon hope of a quick bath in favor of other cooling methods. “It’s like a-hundred-and-something degrees at Bonnaroo right now. It’s epically hot,” said Stephanie Hammel, who came down from Long Island for Bonnaroo 2011. “We’re staying cool by drinking lots and lots of water. Using a lot of sunscreen. Putting ice cubes down our shirts.” “We keep a couple bottles of misters on us, so that helps. But the secret is the comedy tent,” Aaron Devens revealed. “It’s air-conditioned, so you can go in there and just stay there. I think I saw, like, a dozen comedians already.” Then again, brutal temperatures are nothing new at Bonnaroo, and with a Friday night schedule that included high-profile sets by Arcade Fire and Lil Wayne (to name just a few), most had no other choice but to take off their shirts, slather on the sunscreen and just deal with the sweltering heat. “I mean, it’s really hot. It’s hot as — excuse my French — balls. There’s not a lot of shade,” Anna Vega laughed. “But, I mean, that’s how it is. Someone’s going to have to drag me to go see Lil Wayne tonight.” What are your keeping-cool tips at summer festivals? Let us know in the comments below! Lil Wayne Wows Bonnaroo With Late-Night Set

Weezy’s Friday-night headlining set was fierce, fiery and even saw the end of a long-running feud. By James Montgomery Lil Wayne performs during the 2011 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival Photo: Erika Goldring/WireImage MANCHESTER, Tennessee — Over its 10-year history, the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival has played host to all sorts of acts, but few of them — if any — ever took the stage to a prerecorded message from the New York State Department of Corrections (not even Phish). Lil Wayne did just that on Friday night (or, more correctly, early Saturday morning), bounding onstage while the last strains of a DOC phone message — recorded after he was released from prison last November — faded from the rather formidable stacks of speakers that flanked him. And it was just one of the history-making moments during his headlining set. Bonnaroo has had hip-hop acts headline previously ( Kanye West took a rather disastrous turn in 2008, and Jay-Z mainstaged without much incident last year), but they weren’t Wayne. He’s not a household name on par with ‘Ye or Jigga, and there existed the very real question of whether his set would translate to the Bonnaroo crowd . But when Wayne wrapped his set just before 3 a.m., that question had been answered. Not only did he go over like gangbusters, but he did it in gritty, sweat-drenched glory. He worked it hard, hanging from his microphone stand, descending into the crowd below and rolling around on the stage floor. He tore off his yellow tank-top mid set and stalked the stage in only a low-slung pair of shorts, aqua-colored socks and checkered Vans. And he spit verses at a staggering rate. You could call it a star-making turn, but Wayne’s already a star … though, perhaps, on this night, he truly became one in the eyes of the Bonnaroo elite. Song-wise, his performance didn’t stray too far from the set he’s been working on his I Am Still Music tour — he opened with “I’m Goin’ In” and segued into “Bill Gates,” thundered through “A Milli,” deftly moved through “Swag Surfin’ ” and “Hustle Hard,” worked in swatches of “Green and Yellow,” slowed things down for the ladies on “I’m Single” — and he brought out members of his Young Money family (Mack Maine, Lil Twist, Shannelle, Jae Millz) to give them some shine too. And in that regard, his Bonnaroo set was pretty historic too. He was one of the first headliners to put on a genuine revue, a musical, multiple-act bill that just so happened to double as his set. As can be expected, his performance tended to lose some steam when Weezy was sharing the stage with his associates (or when he’d disappear and let them perform on their own), but he more than made up for it in the sheer tenacity of songs like “Welcome to My Hood” or “Drop the World” (which didn’t suffer from the lack of Eminem). Backed by a lock-step live band, songs like “Forever” and Lollipop” pulsed and surged with icy precision. Songs from his upcoming Tha Carter IV album, “How to Love” and “6 Foot 7 Foot,” expanded and contracted with elasticity, particularly the latter, which brought his set to a close — eternally buoyed by his rasping voice and staccato cadence. Perhaps to mark the momentous nature of his headlining performance (which, if it wasn’t his biggest show to date, has got to be in the top three), or, maybe just to make actual history, Wayne even brought out his former in-house producer — and, by all accounts, former friend — Mannie Fresh, who parted ways with Cash Money in 2005 under less that harmonious circumstances. The two embraced onstage, while those in the audience who were wise to the backstory cheered wildly, and though the moment was brief, it served notice that whatever disagreements the two may have had, they were all but forgotten by now. After all, no one — not even Lil Wayne — would let a petty feud stand in the way of history. Stick with MTV News for show reports and interviews from Bonnaroo 2011 all weekend long. Florence And The Machine Reveal Inspirations Behind New Album

Florence Welch talks fame and ghostly visits before her Bonnaroo set on Friday. By James Montgomery Florence Welch of Florence and the Machines performs during the 2011 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival Photo: Erika Goldring/WireImage MANCHESTER, Tennessee — When Florence Welch began writing the songs that would become her breakout Lungs album, she was just 18 years old and had no idea of what lay ahead of her. Now, as she begins putting the finishing touches on the follow up to that album — working in the iconic Abbey Road studios — she finds herself a few years older, but oddly enough, in much the same position. “It’s nearly finished, but, of course, that’s the hardest part for me, because once it’s finished, you have to share it with others,” she told MTV News on Thursday before her sundown set at Bonnaroo . “So, I’ve found myself obsessing over the way I’ve sung one little word, and wanting to go back and do it over again. I’m going to try and hold onto it as long as possible.” While Welch admits the album is in its final stages, she still has a difficult time describing exactly what it sounds like. But from what she does say, it seems like the still-untitled effort won’t sound like Lungs. “I wrote so much of my first album at different times and places — some songs when I was 18, some when I was 21 — so there are so many pieces and styles on it,” she said. “And that’s one of the things I love about it, but for my new record, I wanted to do things differently. It’s why I worked with one producer in one studio. I want to tie all those things together … in one piece, if possible.” The new album also reflects everything that’s happened to her on her rather rapid ascent to fame. But she’s also taking inspiration from far different, far more ethereal places, too. “There’s a song on it that’s inspired by a visit [from] my dead grandmother — like, I had really, really vivid dream about her and, um, she was giving me advice in this dream,” she said. “And it was really emotional, and I woke up crying. And there’s one song that’s inspired by that experience.” Stick with MTV News for show reports and interviews from Bonnaroo 2011 all weekend long. Bonnaroo 2011 Headlined By Eminem, Lil Wayne, Arcade Fire

Wiz Khalifa, the Strokes, Mumford & Sons and the Black Keys also set to appear at Bonnaroo. By James Montgomery Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage On Tuesday (February 15), organizers announced the lineup for the 2011 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, set for June 9-12 in Manchester, Tennessee. And, boy, it’s going to be interesting to hear the purists’ take on this year’s bill. Browse photos of the 2011 Bonnaroo performers . Unlike earlier, decidedly crunchy editions of the fest, the 2011 lineup is topped by two of the hugest hip-hop acts in the business — Eminem and Lil Wayne — along with newly crowned Grammy champs Arcade Fire and the Black Keys. Other acts on the bill include Mumford & Sons, the Strokes, the Decemberists, Florence and the Machine, Big Boi, Wiz Khalifa and Robyn. Of course, there are still some nods to Bonnaroo’s roots: Fest vets Widespread Panic return once again, as do My Morning Jacket and the String Cheese Incident. Also doing their part for the traditionalists out there are reunited legends Buffalo Springfield (in their only festival performance), Robert Plant and the Band of Joy, and Dr. John and the Original Meters, who will perform their 1974 album Desitively Bonnaroo, from which the festival took its name. As in previous years, there will be an epic super-jam, this one organized by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and Dr. John. Other artists set to appear at the 10th annual Bonnaroo include Ray LaMontagne, Iron and Wine, Girl Talk, Primus, Explosions in the Sky, Deerhunter, the Walkmen, Sleigh Bells and Smith Westerns. All in all, some 150 bands will perform at this year’s fest. Tickets for Bonnaroo 2011 go on sale Saturday, February 19 at 12 p.m. ET through the festival’s official website .
