Doin’ The Right Thing: 20 Florida High School Students Headed To Prom Pull 7 People Trapped In An Overturned Van On The Highway

This is a beautiful thing! 20 Florida Prom Goers Stop To Help Family Trapped Inside Overturned Van Via ABCNews Decked out in tuxedos and ball gowns, 20 prom-bound high school seniors and their limousine driver came to the rescue after a van overturned on a Florida highway. The well-dressed students managed to pull seven passengers from the van Saturday and make it to prom just 15 minutes late, limousine driver Danny Izzi told ABCNews.com. The students were traveling on Interstate 595 to their prom at the Westin Hotel on Fort Lauderdale beach when the van, which was in front of the limousine, began swerving, Izzi said. “When it hit the wall and turned over, I was right behind it,” Izzi said. He hit the brakes and got out of the car to help. Frank Tucker, a football player at Western High School in Davie, Fla., said the students had no idea why they had come to a stop until he peeked out the window. “I saw the bottom of the van,” he told ABCNews.com. “We kind of reacted to it, ran out of the limo and did what we had to do.” Izzi and the teens braved blood and broken glass to pull five adults, a 9-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl to safety. Damn, not the babies! Sgt. Mark Wysocky of the Florida Highway Patrol said the girl was not wearing a seat belt, but she and the other passengers suffered only minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle was charged with failure to use due care and a child restraint violation, he said. When ambulances arrived to take the victims to the hospital, the teens continued to the prom, arriving 15 minutes late and a bit disheveled. Tucker’s girlfriend, Krista Pulcini, had blood all over her gown, he said, but she managed to wash it off and continue on for the evening. “It was a good prom,” he said. “Everybody had a story to tell.” Gotta love people helping people, Kumbayah and all of that good stuff. Florida Crazies: Orlando Man Arrested For Stealing $75,000 Worth Of Soup In A Tractor Trailer

Mm-mm-good Orlando Man Arrested For Stealing $75,000 Worth Of Soup Via NBCNews A 51-year-old Orlando man was arrested on charges that he stole a tractor trailer containing $75,000 worth of soup, authorities said. Eusebio Diaz Acosta, 51, faces charges of grand theft of cargo worth $50,000 or more and grand theft of a motor vehicle following his arrest early Sunday on the Florida’s Turnpike, according to authorities. Broward Circuit Judge John Hurley called the facts of the case “very unusual.” “This is the first time the court’s ever seen $75,000 worth of soup stolen,” Hurley said Monday, as he set Diaz Acosta’s bond at $25,000. The Florida Highway Patrol said that it received a report of a stolen tractor trailer hauling soup that was being tracked by GPS, and the tractor trailer driven by Diaz Acosta was pulled over at the 63-mile marker of the turnpike in Tamarac. Man Down: Dog Owner Killed After His Pooch Jumps In The Car, Steps On The Gas Pedal And Runs Him Over

This “man’s best friend” made a fatal mistake… Man Killed After Dog Steps On Gas Pedal And Runs Him Over A Florida man who was arriving home with his dog in the car suffered a fatal and unexpected death when  dog leaped into the car , stepped on the gas pedal, and ran over the man…… killing him on impact. via Yahoo News We’ve all seen tragic headlines about a man being killed by his best friend. But this sad story out of the Sunshine State is truly bizarre: James Campbell  died after his dog jumped into his van and landed on the vehicle’s accelerator . The Associated Press reports that Campbell, 68, has just returned home with Iris Fortner, 56, who had backed up to the driveway of their Florida Panhandle home. Campbell got out and stepped behind the vehicle to open the gate, and Fortner opened the driver’s side door to see where he was. That’s when her boxer bulldog reportedly jumped in, landing on the vehicle’s accelerator. The Florida Highway Patrol said Fortner tried to stop the van, but Campbell was already trapped underneath it. He was pronounced dead at the scene by officials. SMH. What a horrible way to lose your life.

Officer to Be Executed: Manuel Pardo Convicted of Nine Slayings in 1988

Manuel Pardo was a decorated Florida highway patrolman and police officer, but went off the rails in epic fashion, committing nine murders for which he will be executed Tuesday. Almost 27 years after his killing spree, Pardo, 56, will be put to death Tuesday night at Florida State Prison in Starke, fulfilling a request he made at his 1988 trial. “I am a soldier, I accomplished my mission and I humbly ask you to give me the glory of ending my life and not send me to spend the rest of my days in state prison,” he told the jury. Pardo’s attorneys want to block his execution, arguing in federal appeals that he is mentally ill, something his trial attorney also believed more than two decades ago. “I think that anyone who would get up and ask a jury sentence him to death is insane,” lawyer Ronald Guralnick said recently; his victims have no such qualms. Regino Musa, the brother of one of Pardo’s victims, said it’s difficult to grasp that the execution will finally happen. He and his elderly mother plan to attend. “It’s about time. It’s been so long, you just want to get it over with,” said Musa, whose sister, Sara Musa, was killed by Pardo. “I still have nightmares.” “I don’t have words to describe it. I can’t believe that it’s happening.” Pardo, a former Boy Scout and Navy veteran, began his law enforcement career in the 1970s with the Florida Highway Patrol, graduating at the top of his class. But he was fired from that agency in 1979 for falsifying traffic tickets. He was soon hired by the police department in Sweetwater, a small city in Miami-Dade County. In 1981, Pardo was one of four Sweetwater officers charged with brutality. He was fired four years later after he apparently flew to the Bahamas to testify at the trial of a Sweetwater colleague who was accused of drug smuggling. Pardo lied, telling the court they were international undercover agents. Then over a 92-day period in early 1986, Manuel Pardo committed a series of robberies and worse, killing six men and three women in the process. He took photos of the victims and recounted some details in his diary, which was found along with newspaper clippings about the killing in his home. Pardo was linked to the killings after using credit cards stolen from the victims. He had become fascinated with Adolf Hitler, collecting Nazi memorabilia. His dog, a Doberman pinscher, had a swastika tattoo. “He was very cold,” retired prosecutor David Waksman told the Herald . “He was doing robberies and went home and slept like a baby. He was proud of what he did.”

The Florida Highway Patrol officer who put Danielle Maudsley in a coma was only steps behind her as she fled the FHP station, her hands cuffed in front of her. Officer Daniel Cole was close enough, and—at 267 pounds—big enough, that had he simply heaved himself in her general direction, he likely could have tackled Maudsley. One of the four men who accused Bishop Eddie Long of sexual misconduct — the first one to speak publicly about the allegation — was arrested this week in Miami on suspicion of being a drug dealer. Jamal Parris, 24, was driving a white 2011 BMW in Miami Beach Tuesday evening when a Florida Highway Patrol officer noticed that it had no tags. After pulling the car over the approaching officer approached and smelled marijuana. A search of the car turned up 181 grams of marijuana, which is worth about $1,000 on the street. The officer also discovered 50 clear plastic baggies and a Taurus semiautomatic handgun. Parris also was carrying $1,250 in cash. Parris was arrested and jailed. He was charged with two felony counts: possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm while committing a felony.
