The Shins Cover Squeeze On Levi’s Pioneer Recording Sessions

Portland band pays homage to British new-wave act as part of denim company’s revival series. By Matt Harper James Mercer Photo: MTV News The Shins may have taken a break while frontman James Mercer works on Broken Bells, his side project with Danger Mouse , but fans can get their fix of the indie Portland band’s melodic rock, thanks to Levi’s Pioneer Sessions, which brought them back together for its 2010 Revival Recordings Program. “This will be the first Shins release in a while,” Mercer said in a video interview for Levi’s. The denim company courted a dozen musical acts and asked them to re-create the songs that helped inspire their own careers. Nas kicked off the series with his cover of the Slick Rick classic “Hey Young World,” and Levi’s has already posted covers by She & Him, Bomba Estereo and Dirty Projectors. The Shins re-crafted “Goodbye Girl,” by British new-wave group Squeeze, who had a string of U.K. hits, including “Up the Junction,” “Tempted” and “Hourglass.” Hard-core Shins fans may know that Mercer spent his high school years living in England, where he was exposed to Squeeze’s music. When Mercer moved back with his family to the States, he recalled being glad to see that Squeeze were enjoying some attention on this side of the pond. “I remember ‘Cool for Cats,’ that was a song that was on MTV three times a day,” Mercer told MTV News from his recording studio. And while Mercer’s earliest memories of the band coincide with his formative years in England, his ongoing fascination with Squeeze had more to do with their penchant for changing their sound, always growing sonically. ” ‘Tempted’ was a major hit for them, and it’s incredible progress [from ‘Cool for Cats’] and it’s only in the course of two years,” Mercer said. “This song just really grabbed me,” Mercer went on to explain of why they chose the 1978 track “Goodbye Girl.” “All the things that grab you about any good song: the melody and the chords and the way that they interact, and the rhythm of the song.” You can check out the song for yourself. The Shins’ cover of Squeeze’s “Goodbye Girl” is available for free download at the Levi’s Pioneer Sessions website. What do you think of the Shins’ Squeeze cover? Let us know in the comments below!

Jack White Says He Recorded ‘Incredible’ Song With Jay-Z

‘I played him something I’ve been kicking around for a while and he immediately came out with words for it,’ White tells British GQ. By Kyle Anderson Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Jack White is a busy man. At the moment, he’s involved in at least one full-time outfit (the Dead Weather) while two other groups wait in the wings (the Raconteurs and the long-dormant White Stripes). Though each of his musical projects is unique, they all feature White’s swamp-monster guitar sounds and his signature voice. According to a recent interview in the British version of GQ magazine, he may now be expanding his palette to include hip-hop. “I just did a record with Jay-Z,” White told the magazine . “We did a song together a few weeks ago. It was incredible.” White didn’t tell the magazine when the song might be released or on whose album it could appear, but he was blown away by Jigga’s legendary knack for improvisation. “I played him something that I’ve been kicking around for a while and he immediately came out with words for it,” White said. “It’s unbelievable-sounding.” This would mark White’s first proper foray into hip-hop, though he has already teamed up with a mutual friend of his and Jay’s. In 2008, he recorded “Another Way to Die” — the official theme song of the 2008 James Bond film “Quantum of Solace” — with Alicia Keys, churning out a ruggedly sexy track that split the difference between White’s visceral garage and Keys’ funky R&B. White can currently be seen in the new White Stripes concert documentary “Under Great White Northern Lights,” while Jay is busy helping get a basketball arena built in Brooklyn. Ludacris Tops Billboard Chart With Battle of the Sexes

Gorillaz’ Plastic Beach debuts at #2. By Gil Kaufman Ludacris Photo: Getty Images Ludacris ‘ Battle of the Sexes will lead a parade of new faces in the Billboard 200 top 10 next week, easily leading the chart thanks to sales of 137,000. This is Cris’ third album to debut at #1. The concept disc about gender squabbles easily bested the latest from English cartoon band the Gorillaz, Plastic Beach , which will land at #2 (112,000) according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. Coming in at #4 in its first week is the latest repackaging of archival material from late guitar god Jimi Hendrix, Valleys of Neptune (95,000), followed by the #5 debut for country singer Gary Allan, Get Off on the Pain (65,000) and the self-titled bow from Broken Bells (#7, 49,000), the collaboration between producer Danger Mouse and the Shins’ James Mercer . Those new players shuffle the deck at the top, with last week’s #1, Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now, slipping down to #3 (105,000), another former #1, Sade ‘s Soldier of Love, skidding four spots to #6 (52,000), Lady Gaga ‘s Fame down one to #8 (47,000) as it crossed the 3 million mark, and the top 10 rounded out by the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) (43,000) and Blake Shelton ‘s Hillbilly Bone (#10, 28,000). Though the film is smashing records, the soundtrack to Tim Burton’s re-imagining of “Alice in Wonderland,” Almost Alice, lost more than 50 percent of its business in week two, tumbling eight slots to #13 (27,000), while last year’s number four “American Idol” finisher Danny Gokey ‘s debut, My Best Days, drops 63 percent, falling 12 spots to #16 in week two on sales of 24,000. A couple of R&B singers are having rough second weeks as well, with Raheem DeVaughn ‘s Love & War MasterPeace plunging 15 spots to #24 (19,000, down 57 percent) and Jason Derulo ‘s self-titled debut dropping 18 to #29 (17,000, down 60 percent). The week’s steepest plunge, though, belongs to rockers Lifehouse, who go from a #6 debut down to #34 with Smoke & Mirrors (15,000, down 72 percent). Indie psychedelic rockers Black Rebel Motorcycle Club come in at #56 with Beat the Devil’s Tattoo (10,000), while Ted Leo and the Pharmacists come in at #107 with their latest broadside to polite society, The Brutalist Bricks (5,000). Things should be pretty static next week, with no major releases. Related Artists Ludacris Gorillaz Jimi Hendrix
