Trailer: Tiny Furniture + Sex and the City = Lena Dunham’s GIRLS, Kinda

It’s awfully simplistic to say so but with Lena Dunham ‘s forthcoming HBO dramedy series GIRLS , which marks the latest milestone in her rapidly ascending career, the comparisons draw themselves — comparisons to Dunham’s own prior work and to all that’s come before in attempting to mine the modern single female experience for insights and laughs in film and television. But whether you’re a fan or a Dunham skeptic, it’s worth taking a look at the show’s first trailer to see for yourself what to expect from the developing filmmaker, especially with folks like Judd Apatow shepherding her post- Tiny Furniture . Dunham’s career-starting indie pic Tiny Furniture (her sophomore feature) earned equal shares of praise and criticism upon release in 2010, but it unquestionably put her brand of wry, neurotic comedy on the radar and demonstrated Dunham’s willingness to expose herself, warts and all, as a writer and performer. GIRLS , also set in New York and concerned with young women on the brink of figuring out their lives, very much expands on the Dunham brand but shows a marked maturity; Dunham stars in front of the camera in addition to writing and directing, and she’s joined by three strong supporting actresses (Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet) who flesh out the series’ circle of twentysomething friends. The similarities to Sex and the City can be found, but they’re also deliberate; characters fully acknowledge that they’re of a generation weaned on SATC ‘s fantasy, just one of the many pop references they cite as somewhat (painfully) self-aware New York transplants. Truth be told, I was sold after previewing the first three episodes, especially given where GIRLS falls in the vast range of female-slanted shows on the air of late; it debuts on HBO this April and bridges the gap between the current class of girl-oriented network fare and the more daring stuff found on cable these days, but also captures a range of interests and talent so innately of this generation. For example: The trailer below teases appearances by Chris Eigeman ( Metropolitan ) and Peter Scolari ( Bosom Buddies )! What’s more, an upcoming episode features a particularly juicy turn by Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone that I’ve been thinking about repeatedly since. This is TV (HBO’s scheduled a 10-episode season to run) but more important than this or that format is the idea that Dunham’s developing her voice as a storyteller in line with what we’ve seen previously. She’s seemingly been given a considerable amount of rope to keep doing her thing (Apatow’s involvement as a producer likely has something to do with that) and it should be interesting to watch as she keeps one foot in television and one in film. GIRLS debuts at SXSW next month and premieres April 15th on HBO.

Shark Week Begins With Andy Samberg’s ‘In Your Face’ Shark Officer

‘Saturday Night Live’ funnyman serves as Chief Shark Officer for Discovery Channel’s annual shark fest. By Eric Ditzian Andy Samberg Photo: MTV News It’s Shark Week , people! It’s that time of year when it’s too damn hot to go outside and we’re all too willing to embrace a shameless and brilliant marketing ploy in which Discovery Channel devotes much of its schedule to the sharp-toothed fishies and we stay glued to the TV because the whole thing honestly is freaking badass. To wit, get ready this week for documentaries called “Shark Feeding Frenzy,” “Sharkman,” “Air Jaws: Sharks of South Africa” and “Top Five Eaten Alive.” Yes, the narration will be heavy on machismo, the soundtracks will veer between horror-movie strings and staccato, annoy-your-neighbors bass lines, and the whole thing will be overseen by Andy Samberg . We’re not exactly sure why, and we’re certainly not complaining, but the “Saturday Night Live” funnyman has been appointed Discovery’s first-ever Chief Shark Officer. Tops among his awesome responsibilities, we found out during a chat with Samberg and his Lonely Islands pals this spring, is the requirement that the CSO taunt all non-CSOs. “Chief Shark Officer! In your face, other dudes!” he cracked. “We’re kind of the Chief Shark brain trust on this,” Jorma Taccone offered. “No, you guys haven’t helped me at all on this,” Samberg shot back with killer instinct. So it’s Samberg and Samberg alone guiding us through the hazards and happiness of Shark Week. Can he handle the pressure? After debuting in 1987, the weeklong block of programming was watched by almost 31 million people last year — the highest-rated shark-themed week in Discovery’s history. Samberg ain’t scared. “I’ve already been in the water with sharks,” he said of a trip to the Bahamas to shoot promotional material for the week. “Did you get to slap five with a shark?” Taccone wanted to know. “Yes, me and a shark slapped five!” Samberg replied. Are you looking forward to the Samberg-helmed Shark Week? Let us know in the comments!

Lonely Island Hype Turtleneck & Chain At Comedy Awards

‘You ever heard of Justin Timberlake or, like, Rihanna?’ Andy Samberg says to sell the collabo-heavy album. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer perform at the 2011 Comedy Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage When it comes to the Lonely Island, the comedy trio whose “Saturday Night Live” digital shorts like “Lazy Sunday,” “I’m on a Boat” and “Jizz in My Pants” have become immense viral sensations, it’s best to expect the unexpected. MTV News got a hold of the Lonely Island — comprised of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone — at the Comedy Awards , where they performed their Akon collaboration “I Just Had Sex,” but it didn’t take long for the group to take ahold of our interview. Our own Josh Horowitz attempted to ask the funnymen about their upcoming album Turtleneck & Chain, which drops May 10, but they decided to interview one another instead. Schaffer asked, to neither of his musical/comedy partners in particular: “Any guest stars we should know about?” To which Samberg dutifully responded, “I don’t know, you ever heard of Justin Timberlake or, like, Rihanna? You ever heard of her? … Do you know a guy named Akon? ‘Cause we do!” Upon hearing that, Schaffer shot back, “Wow, I’m sold. Thank you.” Fans are most certainly familiar with Timberlake, who has appeared on a number of popular Lonely Island tracks, including “Di– in a Box” and “Motherlover,” the latter of which will appear on Turtleneck & Chain. Another track on the sophomore album fans have already become familiar with is their dance-along number with Nicki Minaj called “The Creep,” which debuted during the January 29 episode of “SNL.” “She’s great,” Samberg said of Minaj. “She’s a little weirdo.” Schaffer agreed: “As soon as we saw she existed, we were like, ‘We have to do something with her!’ ” But that wasn’t all that drew the three men to the eccentric rapper, as Samberg joked, “We share a lot of attributes with her, ’cause it’s like lots of great rapping ability, super-bangin’ bods, really intense sense of style, nice smelling … did I say bangin’ bods?” Will you be buying the Lonely Island’s new record? Let us know in the comments! Don’t miss the Comedy Awards at 8 p.m. Sunday night on Comedy Central, VH1, Spike TV, Logo, CMT, TVLand and online at TheComedyAwards.com .
