From Gayle to Ebert: Casting the Oprah Biopic

“Poison pen” biographer Kitty Kelley struck gold with her latest unauthorized biography, that of #1 mortal Oprah Winfrey, and Deadline is reporting the inevitable (but still titillating!) news of an upcoming TV biopic adaptation . The art of the TV biopic is sorely maligned, and I hold the naive belief that a decent Oprah biography could redeem the canon of Lifetime-ready Dana Plato and Nadia Comaneci yarns. Quick, let’s cast this epic while we still have time to influence the filmmakers (and persuade notable actors to withstand the real Oprah’s disapproval).

Octomom to Oprah: No Regrets, Just Guilt

Oprah Winfrey has made headlines recently, thanks to a book by Kitty Kelley accusing her of lying about her upbringing, sexuality and other matters. One way to take negative heat off yourself? Interview Octomom! Though she has no regrets, Nadya “Octomom” Suleman the Big O via satellite that she lives with a “tremendous amount of guilt” for what she did. That being give birth to eight babies as an unemployed single mother of six. She said she did it out of her “own childish desires to compensate.” Raised an only child, she said she was “trying to fill some missing piece inside.” Oddly enough, they were conceived IVF – no actual piece inside. Nadya Suleman: Just so wrong . Instead of filling the void with a significant other, she filled it with Elijah, 8; Amerah, 7; Joshua, 6, Aiden, 5, twins Caleb and Calyssa, 3; and the 14-month octuplets, Noah, Maliyah, Isaiah, Nariyah, Makai, Josiah, Jeremiah and Jonah. “I’ve always coveted that connection, that attachment to another being. And the connection felt safer with children than with a significant other, more predictable,” said Nadya Suleman . “The security. I was hungering for security.” Not financial security, obviously, but that’s another ball of wax. “We’re surviving,” she said (thanks to a bailout by PETA ). “We’re going, going, going, just trying to keep up. You don’t have time to think, to reflect, feel anything. It is a choice. I own all of the responsibility for my poor choices.” Perhaps the first intelligent thing she’s ever said. “Do I regret [it]?” she asked . “You can’t regret children. But the choices were childish. They were immature. They were selfish. Are we defined by our choices? Our behavior? Our actions? No. I don’t believe that defines our worth.” “I feel as though I wasn’t thinking at that time,” she continued. “If I could go back, would I make different choices? Maybe. At this point, I know and I need to teach my children that we need to learn, we need to grow.” “We need to keep on growing and transcending, and we need to make the best possible choices. And when we make poor choices, all you can do is really, really learn from that and grow from that. Try not to repeat it.” As for having more kids (please, please don’t)? “At this point in my life, that is the furthest thing that I would ever even imagine,” she said. “I cannot grow additional eyes or hands. I’m not an octopus.” That didn’t stop her the first time, but hey. “I live every single day every hour of the day with a tremendous amount of guilt,” she went on. “And I feel guilty when I hold the one or two and then that I can’t be there for the others. And they’re crying. And I feel guilty.” “I’ll live with this forever. But all I can do now is keep on going, keep moving. Keep on trying to be the most devoted mother I can be.”

‘Right’ from the Heart

Katharine Carr on Oprah: She’s a Liar!

It’s hard to know what to make of Kitty Kelley and her new, unauthorized biography of Oprah Winfrey. On one hand, the author relies on anonymous sources and tired gossip material to write about the talk show host’s sexuality and friendship with Gayle King. However, she also broke the (confirmed-as-true) news that Oprah once lived with John Tesh. Kelley has penned books on famous subjects such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Frank Sinatra and Nancy Reagan – and never been successfully sued for libel or forced to retract a written statement. The author may make her living in a morally grey area, but she’s never been outed as a liar. Therefore, Oprah fans might be disturbed by the content of Kelley’s latest book. Especially the chapter that quotes Winfrey’s cousin, Katharine Carr. Simply put, Carr paints Oprah as someone who is an enemy of the truth… “Where Oprah got that nonsense about growing up in filth and roaches, I have no idea. [Oprah’s grandmother] kept a spotless house… It was a wooden, six-room house with a large living room that had a fireplace and rocking chair,” Carr says, adding: “I’ve confronted her and asked ‘Why do you tell such lies?’ Oprah told me, ‘That’s what people want to hear. The truth is boring.'” Carr also says she loves her cousin and forgives her because Oprah has done so much for other people. But she closes with a major zinger: “Oprah does not love her mother at all… She gives her a great deal financially, but she does not give her the respect and affection a daughter should, and that bothers me.” Are these words of a bitter relative? Or the exposure of television’s most beloved icon as someone that’s built a reputation on lies and half-truths? You decide.

New Book: Oprah Winfrey Once Lived With, Boned John Tesh

In a word: Ewww!!!! At various (unfounded) points over the last few times, Oprah Winfrey has been linked romantically to BFF Gayle King. Now, the talk show queen has another report to deal with that focuses on her love life: According to an upcoming, unauthorized Oprah biographer by Kitty Kelley, Winfrey was involved with John Tesh many years ago, long before she hosted a hit talk show and started dating Stedman Graham. The pair allegedly lived together in Nashville in the mid-70s, as both worked in broadcast television there. Why did Tesh, not a syndicated radio host and musician, call off the relationship? The “social pressure” of their interracial romance, an anonymous source claims. “[He] couldn’t take it anymore…He walked out in the middle of the night…he told me he later felt very guilty about it,” said the insider. The trashy book, which seeks to exploit Oprah’s fame and private life, refers to Stedman as “boring as hell.” Without getting into specifics (likely because she has no evidence to back anything up), Kelley tried to create buzz around her book by telling USA Today : “I know people are expecting me to ‘out’ her. But I think she’s just asexual. She’s poured all of her energies into her career. And if she is, she is never, ever going to come out. So relax, people.” Yeah! Relax, people! Stop getting so worked up over a story that never had a shred of proof and is only brought up by the least respectable publications around!
