During a recent appearance on E!’s “Lady Gang” Scherzinger didn’t hold back in a game of celeb-association when T.I.’s name was brought up. One of the hosts asked Nicole what it was like working with T.I. Source: NurPhoto / Getty Black History Month was sooo close to losing this first full week of February. The racist ridiculousness was something serious. But as the ancestors said before us, still we rise. Check out the losers for the week below, then hit the next page to find out who helped save what was left of Black History month! Losers People who don’t know what racism is Clearly, racism needs to get more airtime in school classrooms because it seems people still don’t understand the full weight of the phenomenon. The topic received a lot of attention this week starting with Liam Neeson who revealed that he once went looking to kill a “Black bastard” after his friend said she was raped by a Black man. Neeson explained himself on Good Morning America and how he regretted his feelings at the time. However, he never once said that his actions and sentiments were racist. As a matter of fact, he went on to say “I’m not racist, this was nearly 40 years ago.” Sorry Liam, that was racist. Find out why here. The non-acknowledgement of racism didn’t stop here, however. The next day, Neeson’s co-star in the movie Widows Michelle Rodriguez had the audacity to defend Neeson by saying: “Dude, have you watched Widows ? His tongue was so far down Viola Davis’ throat. You can’t call him a racist ever. Racists don’t make out with the race that they hate, especially in the way he does with his tongue—so deep down her throat. I don’t care how good of an actor you are. It’s all bullsh**. Ignore it. He’s not a racist.” Father help us. I guess Michelle missed that unit on Black fetishization in her 5th grade history class. And guess what Michelle? It’s all tied to the one big family of… R A C I S M. And finally, you’d think after think pieces, Twitter rants and Facebook arguments, people would understand that blackface is bad and also has ties to racism , right? Naw. According to a recent YouGov poll , only 58 percent of Americans believe blackface is bad. Meanwhile, Gucci is making blackface sweaters and current Democrat leaders, like Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam , are being pinned for their blackface past. *Sigh* Either A LOT of teaching needs to be done or people just don’t care. Either way, racism is clearly still alive.
On Tuesday, January 29, the internet was horrified by news of the vicious hate crime committed against Empire actor Jussie Smollett . He was beaten, called racist and homophobic slurs, doused with bleach, and a noose was wrapped around his neck. During the assault, the monsters said to him: “This is MAGA country.” Unspeakable. Jussie was hospitalized for multiple injuries, including a cracked rib from the beating. It turns out that just over a week ago, his life was threatened in a hateful letter that may be linked to the crime itself. Police are investigating it as a “possible” hate crime (that's legal jargon for definitely a hate crime ). In the mean time, celebrities are in the same place as the rest of us: shocked, angry, and wondering what they can do. They have taken to social media to voice their support for him and openly wonder at the evil in some people's hearts. 1. Jussie Smollett is Lucky to be Alive Jussie was attacked at 2am outside of a Chicago Subway on Tuesday, January 29. He was beaten by two men, who yelled both racist and homophobic slurs at him and identified him from his role on Empire. He was doused with an “unknown chemical substance,” believed to be bleach, and a noose was wrapped around his neck. He was hospitalized but released later that day. One of his injuries was a cracked rib. 2. Police are on the case TMZ reports that they’ve already acquired some CCTV footage within 12 hours of the assault, and are looking to obtain more, as well as speak to potential eyewitnesses. In the mean time, celebrities feel just like his friends do — utterly hopeless in the face of such an evil attack. And so they are tweeting their support for him, expressing shock, anger, love, and even hope. 3. Zendaya Spider-Man actress Zendaya was one of the first stars to tweet her horror at what happened. 4. Viola Davis Viola Davis is one of the most acclaimed black actresses in film or on television. 5. Janet Mock Janet Mock is a famous trans woman, and she is also a black woman. She knows as well as Jussie does how dangerous the world can be for those who are both black and LGBTQ+. Like Jussie, she has two targets on her back. 6. Andy Cohen Andy is one of the most famous gay men on the planet. This attack was a sobering reminder to everyone that an attack like this can not only happen to someone famous — it can happen BECAUSE someone is famous. View Slideshow

Email Submit The new Washington, D.C. metro headquarters in Arlington will be located in National Landing. Tens of thousands of additional jobs are expected to be created starting in 2019. “We are excited to build new headquarters in New York City and Northern Virginia,” said Jeff Bezos, founder, and CEO of Amazon. “These two locations will allow us to attract world-class talent that will help us to continue inventing for customers for years to come. The team did a great job selecting these sites, and we look forward to becoming an even bigger part of these communities.” SEE ALSO: Nas-Backed Medical Service PillPack Sells To Amazon For $1 Billion National Landing is an urban community in Northern Virginia located less than 3 miles from downtown Washington, D.C. The area is served by 3 Metro stations, commuter rail access, and Reagan National Airport – all within walking distance. The community has a variety of hotels, restaurants, high-rise apartment buildings, retail, and commercial offices. National Landing has abundant parks and open space with sports and cultural events for residents of all ages throughout the year. As part of Amazon’s new headquarters, Virginia and Arlington will benefit from more than 25,000 full-time high-paying jobs; approximately $2.5 billion in Amazon investment; 4 million square feet of energy-efficient office space with the opportunity to expand to 8 million square feet; and an estimated incremental tax revenue of $3.2 billion over the next 20 years as a result of Amazon’s investment and job creation. Amazon will receive performance-based direct incentives of $573 million based on the company creating 25,000 jobs with an average wage of over $150,000 in Arlington. This includes a workforce cash grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia of up to $550 million based on $22,000 for each job created over the next 12 years. Amazon will only receive this incentive if it creates the forecasted high-paying jobs. The company will also receive a cash grant from Arlington of $23 million over 15 years based on the incremental growth of the existing local Transient Occupancy Tax, a tax on hotel rooms. The community and Amazon employees will benefit from the Commonwealth investing $195 million in infrastructure in the neighborhood, including improvements to the Crystal City and the Potomac Yards Metro stations; a pedestrian bridge connecting National Landing and Reagan National Airport; and work to improve safety, accessibility, and the pedestrian experience crossing Route 1 over the next 10 years. Arlington will also dedicate an estimated $28 million based on 12% of future property tax revenues earned from an existing Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district for on-site infrastructure and open space in National Landing. “We are proud that Amazon has selected National Landing for a major new headquarters. This is, above all, a validation of our community’s commitment to sustainability, transit-oriented development, affordable housing, and diversity,” said Arlington County Board Chair Katie Cristol. “The strength of our workforce coupled with our proximity to the nation’s capital makes us an attractive business location. But Arlington’s real strength is the decades of planning that have produced one of the most vibrant, civically engaged communities in the world. Those plans have paved the way for this investment, and we look forward to engaging the Arlington community about Amazon’s plans and how we can grow together.” You can click here to read more from the Amazon Press Release . Viola Davis and Liam Neeson are ready to hit the big screen in the Steve McQueen directed piece called Widows. This is the follow up to his Academy Award nominated 12 Years A Slave, in Widows, Viola plays a grieving wife named Veronica Rawlings who has to go on a heist with a group of other widows to repay their husband’s debts when a gangster turned politician named Jamal Manning comes knocking at her door asking for his money that got robbed by their deceased husbands. Sounds interesting right? I went to Chicago to sit down with Viola, Liam, Brian Tyree Henry, Cynthia Erivo and Michelle Rodriguez for this episode of Extra Butter with Xilla Valentine. The film is your classic tale of cops and robbers with a subplot of bad guys and gals fighting each other so it will be no surprise that this film has a lot of police interaction. I asked the cast about police brutality and Michelle Rodriguez opened up about losing a loved one to police violence in Jersey City, NJ. “I’ve been exposed to a lot of police brutality growing up in Jersey City. The Latino community as well as the African American community we are in it together,” Michelle explained. “I’ve seen so much gnarly stuff happening growing up in jersey city I’ll give you one account. My God son’s uncle being killed by cops and they tried to hide it by taking the body from the actual hospital, removing his tongue in the morgue before his sister could go identify the body. This is the kind of stuff the cops do to cover themselves up.” Liam chimed in as well, referencing the Laquan McDonald case where officer Jason Van Dyke, 40, was charged with murder acknowledging that these are sensitive times especially in Chicago where a young black man was shot 16 times. Also on this episode of Extra Butter, Brian Tyree Henry and Cynthia Erivo talk about crafting great scenes with Viola Davis and Viola and Liam have some fun talking about washcloths a conversation that led to a hilarious moment. Widows is in theaters everywhere this weekend 11/16.
