Black History Month Almost Takes An L While Black Women Continue To Shine: This Week’s Winners & Losers

Source: NurPhoto / Getty Black History Month was sooo close to losing this first full week of February. The racist ridiculousness was something serious.  But as the ancestors said before us, still we rise. Check out the losers for the week below, then hit the next page to find out who helped save what was left of Black History month! Losers People who don’t know what racism is Clearly, racism needs to get more airtime in school classrooms because it seems people still don’t understand the full weight of the phenomenon. The topic received a lot of attention this week starting with Liam Neeson who revealed that he once went looking to kill a “Black bastard” after his friend said she was raped by a Black man. Neeson explained himself on Good Morning America   and how he regretted his feelings at the time. However, he never once said that his actions and sentiments were racist. As a matter of fact, he went on to say “I’m not racist, this was nearly 40 years ago.”   Sorry Liam, that was racist. Find out why here. The non-acknowledgement of racism didn’t stop here, however. The next day, Neeson’s co-star in the movie Widows Michelle Rodriguez had the audacity to defend Neeson by saying: “Dude, have you watched  Widows ? His tongue was so far down  Viola Davis’  throat. You can’t call him a racist ever. Racists don’t make out with the race that they hate, especially in the way he does with his tongue—so deep down her throat. I don’t care how good of an actor you are. It’s all bullsh**. Ignore it. He’s not a racist.”   Father help us. I guess Michelle missed that unit on Black fetishization in her 5th grade history class. And guess what Michelle? It’s all tied to the one big family of… R A C I S M.   And finally, you’d think after think pieces, Twitter rants and Facebook arguments, people would understand that blackface is bad and also has ties to racism , right? Naw. According to a recent YouGov poll , only 58 percent of Americans believe blackface is bad. Meanwhile, Gucci is making blackface sweaters and current Democrat leaders, like Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam , are being pinned for their blackface past. *Sigh* Either  A LOT of teaching needs to be done or people just don’t care. Either way, racism is clearly still alive.

#NewBlacks: African-American Celebrities Who Believe They Are Beyond Their Burden Of Blackness

Are you a #NewBlack ? African American Celebrities Who Think They Are New Black It must be nice to live in this bleak world rocking designer rose-colored sunglasses because race doesn’t seem to exist. Pharrell Williams recently defined the phenomenon of being a Black person who is able to live beyond their own skin color: “A ‘new black’ is someone who doesn’t blame other races for our issues. The ‘new black’ dreams and realizes that it’s not a pigmentation; it’s a mentality. And it’s either going to work for you, or it’s going to work against you. And you’ve got to pick the side you’re gonna be on.” Oh. Too bad racial profiling, structural racism and bigots don’t give a mighty morphing fawk if you consider yourself a “pre-owned black” or “new black.” Hit the flip to check out some African American celebrities who believe their Blackness ceases to exist just because they are famous, wealthy or live in their own little unicorn and rainbow filled race-free bubble….

Polar Vortex: Is It Coming Your Way?!?

There are certain terms no American wants to hear: Tila Tequila sex tape . Kate Upon clothed. Justin Bieber retiring . And to this list we can now add Polar Vortex, as areas across the Midwest and East Coast are becoming all too familiar with this frigid weather phenomenon. Polar Vortex: What Is It? A Polar Vortex is a whirlpool of freezing air and it descend upon various parts of the country today. Those in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin are experiencing subzero temperatures and more than a foot of snow. They are being encouraged to remain inside. “It’s just a dangerous cold,” National Weather Service meteorologist Butch Dye says, referring to places such as Fargo, North Dakota, where the forecast is for 32 degrees below zero. Frostbite and hypothermia often set in quickly at 15 to 30 below zero. The weather is wreaking havoc on travel, as well, with thousands of flights canceled yesterday through Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis. Attractions such as the St. Louis Art Museum and St. Louis Zoo have been closed indefinitely, while the Indiana Supreme Court is closed and even southern states are bracing for record-low temperatures. There are endless snow days around the country, but let’s hope those happy kids are bundled up to the fullest extend while they sled and play around. It’s seriously dangerous out there.

Race Matters: NBA Baller Jeremy Lin Says Colleges And Pro Scouts Were Prejudiced Against Him Because He’s Asian

There’s a shocker… Jeremy Lin Says Colleges And NBA Scouts Snubbed Him Because He Is Asain Via NYDailyNews Former New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin says his ethnicity is to blame for why he was not offered scholarships to major colleges and why he was passed over during the NBA draft. In a “60 Minutes” interview that was excerpted Friday, the Houston Rockets point guard was asked why he didn’t get a free ride to play hoops at UCLA or Stanford after he led his high school team in Palo Alto, Calif., to a state championship. “Well, the obvious thing in my mind is that I was Asian-American … I think that was a barrier,” Lin told interviewer Charlie Rose. CBS will air the full interview on Sunday. It explores his meteoric rise to fame after he came off the Knicks bench last spring as a relative unknown and created the phenomenon known as “Linsanity” with his remarkable play. Ethnicity has no bearing on athletic skill, Lin says. But he acknowledges that outdated perceptions about race still exist. “It’s just a stereotype,” he said. Lin said he believes that if he were white or black he would have gotten a scholarship to his dream school, Stanford. He went to Harvard, where no athletic scholarships are granted. The fact is, Jeremy is probably right. Hell, even in a pick-up game at the park he’d more than likely get picked last. That said, we bet that 3-year, $25 million contract is keeping him very warm at night. Image via AP

Law & Order: SVU Spanks Fifty Shades of Grey Author E.L. James

This week television’s probing procedural Law & Order: SVU ripped inspiration from the headlines — or rather, the bestseller list — with a case involving the assault of the author of a Fifty Shades of Grey -style novel. (Starring My Girl ‘s Anna Chlumsky!) But what’s the takeaway here? What’s L&O:SVU really trying to say to  E.L. James ? Chlumsky guest-starred as Jocelyn Paley, a successful writer whose bondage-fantasy lit phenomenon, 25 Acts , has burned its way up the charts. “Her book makes Fifty Shades look like a Disney story,” explains talk show host Adam Cain (Roger Bart), who then takes fantasies straight from Paley’s book over the rape-y line. As they do each week, the L&O:SVU crew then sets out to seek justice. But there’s a twist! (Uh, spoilers.) Paley’s not the real author of the kinky Fifty Shades stand-in, but has instead claimed credit and made a fortune off of someone else’s writing. Plagiarism: Another shade of grey! (Ok, not really.) In real life, James has tread both moral grounds. As  Fifty Shades  blazed a kinky trail through the suburbs and lady lit world, critics claimed its depictions of the BDSM community are off-base and promote regressive gender politics. Is protagonist Ana Steele an agent of her own sexual awakening or a pathetic young woman submitting herself to the irresistibly damaged Christian Grey ? The twisty question of authorship put on blast by L&O:SVU also has roots in James’ phenomenal success. First penned and shared online (for free!) as Twilight fan fiction — minus the supernatural stuff, but with all of the emotional desperation — Fifty Shades of Grey became a commercial property when James stopped going by her message-board friendly AKA Snowqueens Icedragon, re-named her characters to avoid copyright infringement, and turned her lusty fanfic into a book . So what’s going on here, L&O ? Does James owe more of a debt than she acknowledges to Twilight and the fan community that once welcomed her as their own? Are there repercussions to cashing in as James did without giving proper credit? Are the  Law & Order  writers not entirely objective in their deliciously entertaining, headline-ripping yarn-spinning ? Recall that cutting Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode inspired by Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark featuring Cynthia Nixon as a wacko drunk Julie Taymor doppelganger?  Yeah, not judgmental at all. I do hope that the producers of the in-development  Fifty Shades of Grey movie take note of this L&O: SVU episode and, in some way, acknowledge the meta-fictional incest loop of it all, because by the time the film spanks its way into theaters we’ll have dissected James’ novel — and the phenomenon surrounding it — every which way already. And if the big-screen adaptation is just a straight, lightly erotic retelling of Ana and Christian’s kinky courtship it’ll all seem so… vanilla . Oh, and one more thing:  When will Richard Belzer record his  Fifty Shades of Grey celebrity narration? Watch the full episode online here and wonder how long all this will be relevant as the  Fifty Shades of Grey movie keeps chugging along. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Here’s Everything You Could Ever Want to Know About Nudity Riders [PIC]

“I will show side boob for three seconds in a moving shot. I will show the left cheek from the left side in a dim light…” Shameless star Emmy Rossum gave the world a glimpse into the world of nudity riders in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter , saying that when she first signed on for the role, she and the producers discussed specifically what she would show, how long she would show it, and even what the light would be like in the scene. Now the women’s career blog The Grindstone (of all places) has launched a full-scale SKINvestigation into the phenomenon, and have dug up some honest-to-goodness entertainment lawyers to explain the ins and outs (heh) of the nudity rider. We’re wading knee-deep in legalese after the jump!
