#NewBlacks: African-American Celebrities Who Believe They Are Beyond Their Burden Of Blackness

Are you a #NewBlack ? African American Celebrities Who Think They Are New Black It must be nice to live in this bleak world rocking designer rose-colored sunglasses because race doesn’t seem to exist. Pharrell Williams recently defined the phenomenon of being a Black person who is able to live beyond their own skin color: “A ‘new black’ is someone who doesn’t blame other races for our issues. The ‘new black’ dreams and realizes that it’s not a pigmentation; it’s a mentality. And it’s either going to work for you, or it’s going to work against you. And you’ve got to pick the side you’re gonna be on.” Oh. Too bad racial profiling, structural racism and bigots don’t give a mighty morphing fawk if you consider yourself a “pre-owned black” or “new black.” Hit the flip to check out some African American celebrities who believe their Blackness ceases to exist just because they are famous, wealthy or live in their own little unicorn and rainbow filled race-free bubble….

So Why is Black Swan a Huge Hit, Anyway? (Hint: Lesbians)

As alluded to in this morning’s edition of The Broadsheet, everyone in Hollywood seems stunned by the success story that is Black Swan . Even filmmaker Darren Aronofsky says he can’t make heads or tails of the phenomenon, which has earned recognition everywhere from manic-comic Saturday Night Live segments to the supermarket-tabloid media obsessed with star Natalie Portman (now pregnant by and engaged to marry on-screen dance partner Benjamin Millipied). “I get the teenage-girl part of the audience because it’s a coming-of-age story about a girl becoming a woman. But older people are seeing it too,” he told the LA Times . “I don’t know if even I understand it.” Oh, Darren — don’t start being modest now : Let’s hear it for lesbians!

SMBC Theater Creates the Perfect MMORPG (The One)

Filed under: Videos , Gaming , The One Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is a great webcomic and it’s also a live-action web show (called SMBC Theater ) that occasionally displays flashes of brilliance. Recently, SMBC Theater skewered the phenomenon of massively multiplayer online roleplaying games — think World of Warcraft — in what might be the best episode yet. Even better, they’ve put their fake MMO online, so you can play it for yourself. The game is just a giant “Click Me” button that gives you a point every time you click. As one character says, “It’s like an MMO, but they stripped out all the pointless bells and whistles.” MMORPGs are a really easy target, but online gaming addiction has come back in a big way with Facebook games like Farmville, so the phenomenon is ripe for mockery once again. The funny part is that the leaderboard of the fake game has some seriously huge numbers of clicks. Whether it’s WoW , Farmville or just clicking, I guess we all just want to collect points.
