New Bill Could Make Revenge Porn Illegal In All 50 States

View post:

Source: Goodshoot / Getty Right now, only 38 of the 50 states have laws to protecting against the non-consensual posting of nude or sexual material online. That’s why Senators Kamala Harris ,  Richard Burr , and Amy Klobuchar and Rep. Jackie Speier are sponsoring a bill that would make revenge porn illegal in all 50 states. The ENOUGH Act (Ending Nonconsensual Online User Graphic Harassment) states that those found guilty of posting private photos or video without consent would face an as-of-yet unannounced fine and up to five years in prison. The federal law would also solve the jurisdiction problems that hold up many of these cases on a state level, since the Internet defies most geographic borders. “There’s no federal law on the books that protects victims who have had their private images exploited online,” Sen. Kamala Harris told Bustle . “It is long past time for the federal government to take action to give law enforcement the tools they need to crack down on these crimes. Perpetrators of exploitation who seek to humiliate and shame their victims must be held accountable.”

Why does Bieber even know who Amy Klobuchar is, let alone this animosity? It’s about S.978, the so-called “Protect IP Act,” and the House version, known as the “Stop Online Piracy Act.” Among other things, these bills would make Web streaming of copyrighted work a felony, with a 5-year jail sentence. Because the Beebs got his start by posting his renditions of other people’s songs on YouTube, activists… Broadcasting platform : Vimeo Source : Firedoglake Discovery Date : 27/10/2011 17:55 Number of articles : 2

Gay rights group to offset Target donation

http://shop.hrc.org/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/380x/5e06319eda06f020e43… A prominent gay rights organization is sending a chunk of money to liberal groups in Minnesota to offset Target's controversial donation to a pro-Tom Emmer political action committee. The Human Rights Campaign, based in Washington, D.C., will donate $100,000 to Win Minnesota, a PAC that helps fund ads targeting Emmer, the GOP candidate for governor. They will toss another $20,000 to OutFront Minnesota, a GLBT group, and $30,000 to individual candidates — including DFLer Mark Dayton. Dayton expected to attend HRC's annual Twin Cities dinner Saturday night at the Depot Minneapolis Hotel, along with Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar. “With all of our success in corporate America, we found ourselves at a crossroads recently during HRC's dispute with Target and Best Buy,” HRC president Joe Solmonese said in prepared remarks. “It wasn't easy and it certainly wasn't on our list of things to do, but it was the right thing to do.” HRC had previously pressed Target to make its own offsetting donation to gay rights groups, but the company declined. “Given the current political and emotionally charged environment, we have concluded that it is best to wait before taking further external action regarding our MN Forward contribution,” the company said in a statement last month. “We believe that it is impossible to avoid turning any further actions into a political issue and will use the benefit of time to make thoughtful, careful decisions on how best to move forward.” ERIC ROPER added by: toyotabedzrock

Senate votes to keep small banks under fed reserves oversight…disgusting really

The Federal Reserve would continue to oversee smaller banks around the country under a measure adopted Wednesday in the Senate, marking a major victory for the Fed as lawmakers prepare to overhaul the nation's financial regulations. This Story * More restrictions on bank investments are debated * Fed holds on to small banks in Senate bill Under the bill originally introduced by Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.), the central bank would have been stripped of the ability to regulate all but the handful of banks that hold assets above $50 billion. The Fed's leaders had vehemently opposed that proposal, saying it would undermine the central bank's effectiveness. Lawmakers agreed on Wednesday, passing 91 to 8 an amendment to keep the Fed as the primary supervisor of the thousands of smaller banks across the country. “This amendment ensures that the nation's monetary policy is connected to Main Street and not just to Wall Street,” said Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.). The vote followed a vigorous campaign by Fed leaders — especially the heads of regional Fed banks, who would have lost most of their regulatory authority. They argued that their oversight of smaller banks provides them a better window into the internal functioning of the economy, noting that those banks have contributed to big economic problems in the past, such as in the 1930s and during the savings and loan crisis of the 1980s. Proponents of shifting that oversight away from the Fed noted that the central bank regulators had made significant mistakes over the past decade, failing to rein in bad lending practices that contributed to the recent crisis. On Wednesday, banking industry representatives quickly praised the vote. “Preserving Fed supervision over smaller institutions means preserving its access to timely information about the flow of credit to small businesses and in communities of all sizes across the country,” Edward L. Yingling, president of the American Bankers Association, said in a statement. “Community banks are vital to the economic health of the nation and issues that impact these banks and their communities should be a major factor in the Fed's decision making process.” See more at the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/12/AR2010051202873…. added by: NotHippie
