Dying Mom Inspires Micheel’s Game, Life

Filed under: PGA , US Open PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Shaun Micheel swallowed hard, rubbed his eyes and, working hard to keep a steady voice, continued with the story. The 41-year old PGA Tour journeyman, whose only career victory came in the 2003 PGA Championship, had just completed a 2-under par 69 Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links to claim a share of the first-round lead in the U.S. Open. He had finished with three birdies over the final five holes, including the 18th. He is tied with England’s Paul Casey and Zimbabwe native Brendon de Jonge. It had been a great a day — if you think golf is really important. “Every time I’m in a tough situation, I think of my mom,” Micheel said. “I love my mother. What do you say? She’s hanging in there.” A year ago Donna Micheel, 63, was diagnosed with lung cancer. Now, the disease has spread to her brain, liver and spine. “It’s hard to watch,” Shaun said.

NBA Finals Game 7 Live Blog: Lakers Pound Glass, But Celtics Lead Early

-There’s superstition, and then there’s letting Christina Aguilera sing the national anthem for the second night in a row. On the one hand, she kind of sucks at singing. On the other hand, the Lakers’ crowd was louder than I’ve ever heard it in Game 6, and they’ll probably have to be just as loud tonight.

When Amani Toomer Passes You, It’s Okay; It’s For A Good Cause

When most people run races for charity, the idea goes that you raise money per mile, or perhaps by breaking a certain time threshold. But Amani Toomer played professional football for 14 seasons. There needs to be a more outwardly competitive element to maintain his interest. After all, if you’ve ever spent time around long-distance runners, you know an unsettling culture of supporting one another that doesn’t exist in many other sports. So when Toomer, who spent his entire playing career with the New York Giants, runs the New York Marathon this fall to benefit to benefit the New York Road Runners youth programs, he’s basing the amount he raises on the number of people he passes on the course. Probably good then that he starting last. When you consider more than 43,000 runners took part in last year’s race, that’s a potentially nice windfall for the youth program. And if passing tens of thousands of runners isn’t enough, Toomer wants to be the four hour, 26 minute time Lynn Swann finished with 17 years ago, when he was the last NFL player to take part in the race.

2010 U.S. Open, First Round Update: Tiger Woods 1-Over After 11

Tiger Woods’ campaign to join the list of four-time champions at the U.S. Open saw some early troubles on the greens , but given the tough conditions seen on the opening round of the U.S. Open, he could be in considerably worse shape. Woods opened with eight straight pars before bogeying on No. 9 after he missed a 6-foot putt for par. At the halfway point of the round, he was two shots off clubhouse leaders Mike Weir, K.J. Choi, Ian Poulter and Rafael Cabrera-Bello. Woods remained 1-over after 11 holes, with two more pars at 10 and 11. Compared to his dominant finish at the 2000 U.S. Open, Woods is not faring poorly comparatively. Back then, he was only a stroke ahead of his current pace through nine holes. The only difference that he shot par on all of the first nine.

Lakers rally by Celtics 83-79 in Game 7 (AP)

Purple and gold confetti raining down upon him, Kobe Bryant hopped up on the scorer’s table, shook his fists and extended five fingers. When he hopped down, Boston’s legendary Hall of Fame center Bill Russell was waiting to shake his hand. A Game 7 classic — and this time, it finally went the Lakers’ way.

Aging Big 3 fail to finish down stretch (AP)

The old guys of the Boston Celtics just didn’t have enough when it came down to the end of the NBA finals. The Celtics nearly pulled off an improbable championship, leading most of the way against the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 7 of the NBA finals on Thursday before losing 83-79. They wasted a superb defensive effort when their offense stalled midway through the fourth quarter.

NBA Finals Game 7 Live Blog: The Real Keys To Tonight’s Game

It’s Game 7. We’re live-blogging. I don’t think I need to explain why. Anyway, here are five keys to tonight’s game, because the ABC pregame show won’t tell you anything of substance. (I really want to see someone do an animated .gif of Magic Johnson talking with vuvuzelas in his hands). Pau Gasol I posted this
