Just take Twitter user Naomi H. for example, who just got an internship with NASA only to be fired a short while later. And what was the cause of her severance? Her #nofilter mouth. According to Newsweek , Naomi H. (as she’s identified on Twitter) got the internship of her dream with NASA. She was so excited by the news that she went on Twitter to celebrate by saying, “EVERYONE SHUT THE FU** UP. I GOT ACCEPTED FOR A NASA INTERNSHIP.” A little aggressive, but congrats right!? Wrong. Someone named Homer Hickam saw Naomi H.’s use of profanity and replied to her tweet by saying “Language.” Well remember Naomi is a #nofilter kind of girl, so she was completely and utterly against being censored. She replied to this Homer guy saying “Suck my di** and balls, I’m working for NASA.” Again, a little aggressive. But who cares, she’s working for NASA! Unfortunately, little did Naomi know, Hickam is a highly respected NASA engineer and a member of the National Space Council — the group that actually overseas NASA. As we descend into a super-hot summer, we have so far experienced some super heavy downpours, but can Atlanta get hit by a hurricane ? According to GEMA the answer is yes. The Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico pose as a natural threat to Georgia during these months, as they provide the prime conditions for hurricanes to develop. When warm moist air rises cold low-pressure systems begin to develop underneath. This causes the high-pressure air systems surrounding the original system to be drawn in as and rise up to the surface. Eventually things begin to swirl about and boom you have the perfect storm. There is no doubt the United States’ coastline is completely prone to being hit by hurricanes, and even though the city of Atlanta is landlocked the state of Georgia is not. Most of the time hurricanes tend to hit areas like Miami and New Orleans often leaving a line of destruction behind them, but on the contrary Atlanta has experienced hurricanes before. In 1995 Hurricane Opal hit Atlanta early October leaving thousands of people powerless for days. When Hurricane Nate made landfall, the entire region experienced nothing but rain and strong winds for the next following days which of course caused down powerlines which meant power outages. Hurricane Irma’s effects left a similar mark with some power outages lasting so long local school systems modified their school calendar to make up for the missed day. Predicting hurricanes is not a simple task, but in Atlanta’s outlook hurricanes may not be such a direct threat for us, but we should never let our guard down when tracking these intense storms. Mother Nature is always in control and we never truly know when that perfect storm is going to be headed our way, so stay alert this hurricane season and don’t get caught in the rain! Getty Images NASA Science Competition Hacked By Racist Trolls NASA has admitted to shutting down the public voting for one of their innovation competitions after a hacker tried to rig the vote against a trio of Black girls who were in the lead. “On Sunday, April 29, hackers attempted to change the vote totals in the NASA OPSPARC Challenge, so managers of the challenge decided to end public voting to protect the integrity of the results,” the agency announced in a statement . The Banneker Academic High School students—Bria Snell, India Skinner, and Mikayla Sharrieff—were competing in NASA Goddard’s Optimus Prime Spinoff Promotion and Research Challenge. Their entry involved creating technology that would purify water in public schools, and had taken an early lead in the final with a whopping 70% of the vote, according to The Ro ot . Now, it looks like NASA had to shut down the voting due to a hacker’s racist intentions to prevent the girls from winning. The prize is a trip to the agency’s national space program in Maryland. The statement continued, “Unfortunately, it was brought to NASA’s attention yesterday that some members of the public used social media, not to encourage students and support STEM, but to attack a particular student team based on their race and encouraged others to disrupt the contest and manipulate the vote, and the attempt to manipulate the vote occurred shortly after those posts.” The Washington Post reports say that the “anonymous posters used racial epithets, argued that the students’ project did not deserve to be a finalist and said that the black community was voting for the teens only because of their race. They urged people to vote against the Banneker trio, and one user offered to put the topic on an Internet thread about President Trump to garner more attention. They recommended computer programs that would hack the voting system to give a team of teenage boys a boost.” The winners of the competition are to be announced in the next few weeks, a NASA Goddard spokesperson told Newsweek . “NASA continues to support outreach and education for all Americans, and encourages all of our children to reach for the stars,” they said.
