J.K. Rowling is frustrated that “a bunch of racists” have criticized the choice of casting a black actress to portray Hermione in the London stage production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child . The play, which sold 175,000 tickets in 24 hours, stars Olivier-award-winning actress Noma Dumezweni as Hermione, the female lead in the literary series. After critics lashed out about the casting announcement, Rowling defended the decision. “With my experience of social media, I thought that idiots were going to idiot,” the author told the Observer . “But what can you say? That’s the way the world is. Noma was chosen because she was the best actress for the job.” Rowling recounts fans complaining to her, arguing that the character must be white because of something she wrote in one of the books. “I had a bunch of racists telling me that because Hermione ‘turned white’ – that is, lost colour from her face after a shock – that she must be a white woman, which I have a great deal of difficulty with,” Rowling revealed. “But I decided not to get too agitated about it and simply state quite firmly that Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm.” Fans may have gotten too attached to Emma Watson, a white actress who originated the role onscreen in the feature films. Last December, Rowling expressed her approval on Twitter over the casting as well, indicating that her books never specified Hermione as Caucasian. “Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione,” she wrote on Twitter. This isn’t the first time Rowling has vocally expressed her distaste of racism and bigotry. Last year, after presidential candidate Donald Trump made numerous statements against Muslims, Mexicans and women, Rowling compared the mogul to Voldemort , the nefarious villain in the Harry Potter series. “How horrible. Voldemort was nowhere near as bad,” she wrote alongside a link to an article about Trump’s wish to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child picks up where the seventh book left off, with Harry as a married father of three who works for the Ministry of Magic. The play is set to open in London’s West End in July 2016.
To celebrate Emma Watson’s 26th birthday, here are a few reasons why we believe there’s still a lot of Hermione Granger’s magic flowing through her right now.
The band is surprised that their cheery-sounding song about a kid with a gun is a contender for Summer Jam of 2011. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Foster the People performing live Photo: Joseph Llanes/ Foster the People Chances are, if you’ve been within a five-mile radius of a radio this summer, you’ve probably heard Foster the People ‘s “Pumped Up Kicks,” their hazy, fuzzy track that has become an unexpected smash and a genuine contender for the Summer Jam of 2011 . But have you really listened to the song — or, more specifically, its lyrics? In keeping with the grand tradition of such alt-hits like Eels’ “Novocaine for the Soul” and the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Today,” the track manages to hide a rather dark message beneath all the mirth. ” ‘Pumped Up Kicks,’ is really about bullying, and the tragedy that bullying produces … if that kid retaliates in a nasty way; both sides end up being harmed,” Foster frontman Mark Foster told MTV News. “All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you’d better run, better run, outrun my gun,” goes the chorus, in a deceptively cheery tone. “I tend to do that with a lot of songs,” Foster said. “I like to tell a different type of story, lyrically, than what the music is expressing, because it brings another layer to the story itself. I wrote it a block away from the beach, and I was working at a music house — Mophonics, a place where I composed for ads and stuff — and I think that had some influence on the sound.” And while Foster the People might be getting a kick out of the fact that their decidedly dark tune has become one of the year’s biggest tracks, they’re also blown away by its slow-burning success … because, really, they never thought “Kicks” would do everything that it has. “I wrote the song like a year and half ago, and for it to still be circling around and become a summer song this year, I think it was definitely unexpected on our part,” Foster said. “We like the song, but we had no idea it would spread around the world the way that it has.” Still, they’re taking full advantage of their newfound clout. Foster said he’s already working on the follow-up to their debut, Torches (which just came out in May), bringing a portable studio out on the road — and they’ve got big plans for another potential hit. Or, we should say, they had big plans … until Katy Perry went ahead and ruined them with her “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” video . “Yeah, we really want to get Kenny G involved on a track, he would just slay it,” Foster sighed. “And I think we were all really bummed out, actually, when we found out that Katy Perry put him in her video, because we had been talking about that for a year — bringing Kenny G into the fold and writing something with him. But, that’s OK. Katy Perry had it first, we’ll have sloppy seconds.” Is “Pumped Up Kicks” one of your favorite songs of the summer? Talk about it in the comments! Related Artists Foster the People
It’s Hermione vs. Snape and Ron vs. Sirius in a showdown for the title of best ‘Potter’ character. By Terri Schwartz Photo: Warner Bros. With only four days left to vote in MTV News’ “Harry Potter” World Cup , the competition is heating up as the contestants narrow down. The Final Four “Harry Potter” characters were revealed Friday (July 8), and now Hermione Granger faces off against Professor Snape while Ron Weasley has a showdown with Sirius Black . It’s anyone’s call as to who will make it into the finals, let alone take home the trophy. “It gets down to who fans really want to see take this entire tournament home,” said Julia Hodges of DanRadcliffe.com and RupertGrint.net . Even with the stakes raised so high, the “Harry Potter” experts MTV has been chatting with have their own gut feelings about who is going to make it into the final round. And, according to Rosie Halse of the Leaky Cauldron , this is Hermione’s last hurrah. “This is where Hermione is going to fall down, unfortunately,” Halse predicted. “I love Hermione to pieces, but I think that Snape has a much more ardent following. He has so many twists and turns in the book, whereas Hermione is quite a constant character that perhaps Snape might win on a character basis.” But the experts still feel that one of the series’ Big Three will make it into the finals: Ron Weasley. “Sirius has been such an important role model to Harry, yet Ron has been such an important friend to Harry,” Andrew Sims of MuggleNet said. “I think in this competition, Ron is going to win because: A) popularity, and B) he’s always been by Harry’s side.” Voting for the Final Four continues on the MTV Movies Blog through Sunday, July 10, at midnight. Then the showdown between the last two “Potter” characters left standing begins promptly at 12:01 a.m. ET on Monday, July 11, with the winner being announced later that night during MTV’s live stream of the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” red-carpet premiere in New York City.
