Fat Joe tells MTV News his latest single is ‘what hip-hop is supposed to be.’ By Rob Markman Fat Joe Photo: MTV News During the early 1990s, the Native Tongues was one of rap’s most influential collectives. Comprised of groups A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and Jungle Brothers, the crew collaborated on beloved hip-hop tracks like De La’s “Buddy” and “A Roller Skating Jam Named ‘Saturdays’.” It’s unifying tracks like those that inspired Fat Joe ‘s latest single “Pride N Joy.” “That’s exactly what it was,” Fat Joe said of the song’s Native Tongues comparisons. “It was like Native Tongues, it was like crazy, everybody was in there, and that’s what hip-hop is supposed to be.” The track was produced by Kanye West and brought Miguel, Roscoe Dash, Jadakiss, Mos Def, Busta Rhymes and DJ Khaled all together in the studio. It was Yeezy who put the plan in motion. ” ‘Ye hit me up and said, ‘Yo Joe, it’s time.’ He don’t even get on the phone, so when he said it was time, I flew into New York,” Joe explained while backstage at Hot 97’s Summer Jam concert on Sunday. “We were up in there working in the lab for like three, four days.” Originally the track featured a bridge sung by R&B stars Trey Songz and Miguel, but West felt the song was better served with a harder rap vibe. “He was like, ‘Yo we gotta turn it into hip-hop, we gotta chant the hook. He called a bunch of people, I called a bunch of people, they came down,” Crack said. “And even if she all about the money, I don’t really care,” the MCs chant in unison while clapping their hands. “We was all in there together and it was an ill vibe,” the Terror Squad leader said describing the scene in the studio. “We brought the microphone outside the studio and no Styrofoam [sound proofing] and everybody together just going in.” Though he is already two singles deep (“Pride N Joy” and the Chris Brown-assisted “Another Round”), Joe isn’t going to rush his eleventh album. There is currently no release date. “I’m taking it back to the ’80s, when artists where putting out like four singles in a row,” he said. “That way you smash ’em and the fans officially know, ‘Yo, this dude got nothin’ but hits on this thing, I’ma go cop the album.’ ” What do you think of “Pride N Joy”? Michael Rapaport said he was done trying to make Q-Tip happy about his Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest documentary which hits theaters today. Tip publicly had beef with the project and Mike catered to him, but recently the film’s director told the press that the Tribe front man would “come around.” And it seems that has happened as Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad spoke to Angie Martinez on Hot 97FM and stated they got the creative control they were after. “If we hadn’t been supportive of the film, it wouldn’t be out. When I said that I wasn’t in support of it on Twitter, the director needed to respect the subject’s few requests that they had about the film artistically, an editing thing,” Q-Tip said. “Like I said before on MTV, it was more like a flare to get his attention, like, ‘Hello?’ because we were trying to get his attention. So we did it and then two days later, they were on a plane and came and worked on the edit.” Even though the movie was changed to the suit the subjects, Mr. Rapaport’s statements in The Daily News rubbed Tip the wrong way. Rap pioneer was caught with the drug after a pat-down at Los Angeles International Airport. The rap pioneer was caught with a small amount of weed as he went through a security screening around 5:45 a.m., according to E! News . After a body scan uncovered “an anomaly” in his clothing, the MC was subjected to a pat-down, which revealed a bag of pot. The Harlem spitter, who was born Kurtis Walker, had less than an ounce of the drug, so he was slapped with a misdemeanor citation and the weed was confiscated. Since kicking off his career in the ’70s, Blow has been lauded as a hip-hop pioneer, with a slew of firsts under his belt. He is credited with becoming the first rapper to release a major-label album, and his signature 1980 single, “The Breaks,” became the first hip-hop song to be certified gold. He is also credited as the first to head out on a national and international hip-hop tour while the culture was still in its infancy as a mainstream force. While hip-hop artists hawk everything from sneakers to beer these days, Blow was the first rapper to sign an endorsement deal. Aside from helping to push hip-hop from a local New York City movement to a global phenomenon, Blow’s legacy as a rap game-changer endures. Contemporary hip-hop stars still turn to his catalog for inspiration. Case in point: His track “If I Rule the World” was covered by Queens MC Nas. With his music career behind him, Blow has since turned to religion, helming services at his Hip Hop Church in Harlem.
MC tweets, ‘Filmmaker should respect the band to the point of honoring the few requests’ made about the doc. By Mawuse Ziegbe Q-Tip Photo: Mark Von Holden/WireImage A Tribe Called Quest’s game-changing legacy is slated to hit the big screen in the forthcoming documentary “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest,” which has been picked up for Sundance. A trailer for the flick recently hit the Web, and Tribe acolytes have voiced their excitement on the project’s Facebook page . However, there is one key detractor whose concerns could potentially derail anticipation for the film and diminish its credibility: Tribe frontman Q-Tip. On Thursday (December 2), the Queens MC blasted the film via his Twitter account. “I am not in support of the a tribe called quest documentary,” he wrote . The “Electric Relaxation” lyricist explained his gripes stem from creative differences between the hip-hop crew and the team behind the doc. “The filmmaker shld respect the band enough to honor our request regarding the film,” Q-Tip wrote. “The filmmaker should respect the band to the point of honoring the few requests that’s was made abt the piece.” A spokesperson for Rival Films, the production company behind the project, was not available when MTV News reached out for comment. Actor Michael Rapaport (“Bamboozled”) directed the film which, according to the flick’s website , revolves around the group’s reunion for the 2008 Rock the Bells Tour . The impact and influence of the collective is explored by fellow hip-hop luminaries like Native Tongues members Busta Rhymes and De La Soul and rap superstars like Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. Despite Q-Tip’s issues with the film, it appears to have been made not only with the band’s cooperation, but all members of the original Tribe lineup — Phife, Ali Shaheed and Jarobi — figure prominently in the project.
