I’m Danielle and I met my idol on November 9th, 2012 . This was the best day of my whole entire life and I am so grateful that I finally got the chance to meet my idol. I’ve been a Belieber since 2009 and I am sure to be here to the end. Every since I first heard Justin, I became more and more in love with him and as the years went by, I was dying to get the chance to meet him or even go to one of his concerts. In December of 2010, Justin was performing in Z100’s JingleBall in Madison Square Garden, and I begged my mom for tickets and the day of, I went and it was amazing. When Justin’s pre-sale tickets came out for his Believe tour, I was in school and I told my mom and dad to try and get me tickets. I wouldn’t care if they were bad seats , I just needed to see my idol. Turns out my parents weren’t answering me all day in school and I cried in all my classes. I had to go to the bathroom and just cry because I had a strong feeling I wasn’t going to get tickets. All my friends told me during school that their parents got tickets for them, and I just started to cry even more. I got home from school and my parents were looking at me strange and I was crying and I was so mad they didn’t get me tickets. My dad was like, “We will try tomorrow…” and I was devastated. Then my dad called me over and said “Well..I got you tickets…” I started flipping out and then he showed me the paper for the tickets, and he was like “Thats not it..” and I was like.. oh my god. There’s no way, this can’t be happening. He showed me the paper that said “Ultimate VIP Package” and thats when I started breaking down in happy tears. I was so blessed that finally after 3 years, I got the chance to meet my idol. This meant the world for me. I got these tickets around May, and I had to wait until November 9th to meet him and the wait was KILLING me. It was getting closer. 10 days. 5 days, and the second I realized it was the next day, I couldn’t function at all. I got to the arena early, and me and my sister got to be the first people on line since we were there extremely early. I met so many Beliebers on the line and it made me even more excited. As I was waiting I saw Dan Kanter , and I ran to him and I was like. “HIII DAN!!!” and we took a picture. I was like, “Thank you so much.” They finally put the wristbands on us and brought us down the escalator into the area where Justin was. I couldn’t breathe at this point. They finally let us into the waiting area by the curtain where Justin was standing. It was about an hour, and there was a knot in my stomach, I was so nervous. After all these years, I was in the same room as Justin, and it didn’t even seem like real life. The security guards were ready and I heard Justin through the curtain saying, “LET’S DO THIS!” They opened the curtain and there he was. Just standing there looking like an angel. It all didn’t seem real, it was like a dream to me. I walked up to him shaking with my hands on my face in shock and he’s standing there smiling. I walked up to him and hugged him, and he hugged back and then I was like “Omg hi I love you so much.” Then there was confusion over the picture arrangements and the security was rushing to take the picture so I went to go take the picture. As they were taking the picture I was like “I love you so much..” and the he was like “I love you too!” We made eye contact and we smiled and I was literally in shock – like the words couldn’t even come out of my mouth. It was so short, but so worth it. After I met him, I just started breaking down and crying. I was just so happy. It was the best feeling in the world to know you waited so long to finally meet your inspiration, and in the moment, it was so real. Soon after the concert started and as I was in my seats. I saw Alfredo walk in my section, and I got up and went to talk to him. “FREDO CAN I PLEASE TAKE A PICTURE WITH YOU” and he was like “Yeah sure!” and he stuck his tongue out, he’s so cute! This day was just the best day of my whole entire life. Justin is the reason I’m on this earth, and I am so happy that I finally got the chance to meet him, and go to his concert. I will ALWAYS be a Belieber at heart. Justin means everything to me and I will support him till the end. I’m so happy I got the chance to write something for this website, I remember I used to look at these and cry because I used to realize that I won’t ever meet Justin…Never Say Never right? Always BELIEVE. For all of you Beliebers out there, you will meet or get noticed by Justin or the crew. -@AllThingsBiebur Read the original post: I’m Danielle and I met my idol on November 9th, 2012. Given the Labor Day weekend, most of this week’s high-profile home-video releases are TV box sets timed to promote the new seasons of such returning favorites as The Good Wife and Grey’s Anatomy . That doesn’t mean film lovers are out of luck: there are new editions of beloved comedies from two very different directors who both managed to be brand names in their chosen fields. HIGH: The Navigator: Ultimate Edition (Kino Classics; $29.95 DVD/$34.95 Blu-Ray) Who’s Responsible: Directed by Buster Keaton and Donald Crisp from a story by Clyde Bruckman, Joseph Mitchell and Jean Havez; starring Keaton and Kathryn McGuire. What It’s All About: Keaton stars as the rich and thoroughly useless Rollo Treadway, who has his chauffeur drive him across the street so he can propose to the equally wealthy and spoiled Betsy O’Brien (McGuire). She turns him down, but through a series of complicated circumstances, the two of them find themselves alone on a ship in the middle of the Pacific. Things start out disastrously — she boils a giant pot of water to cook one egg — but they figure out a way to survive, just in time to face attack by angry islanders. Why It’s Schmancy: Academics, list-makers and cinematic know-it-alls of every stripe champion Keaton’s The General as one of the greatest silent comedies ever made, but I’ve always preferred this 1924 slapstick-heavy nautical epic. From the early scenes of the two young dilettantes trying to figure out who else is on the boat to Keaton’s underwater antics in a pre-SCUBA diving suit — which he later turns into a raft — The Navigator shows the legendary director in top form and makes the perfect movie to show to someone who’s never seen a silent movie before. Why You Should Buy It (Again): The “Ultimate Edition” marks the Blu-Ray debut of this classic, although both the Blu-Ray and the DVD releases include the HD master from the original 35mm negative, tinted to the filmmaker’s specifications. Both editions also include an orchestral score by Robert Israel, a featurette on the making of the film and Keaton’s ongoing fascination with boats as a source of comedy. Feature-length audio commentary by silent film historians Robert Arkus and Yair Solan, a photo gallery, and the audio of “Asleep in the Deep,” a 1913 hit song referenced in the film, gives this package some real depth. LOW: Zotz! (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment; $20.95 DVD) Who’s Responsible: Directed by William Castle, written by Ray Russell, based on the novel by Walter Karig; starring Tom Poston, Jim Backus, Margaret Dumont. What It’s All About: College professor Jonathan Jones (Poston) finds an ancient amulet and discovers that he can use it to slow down time, cause great pain and even (when it’s pointed at someone and the title of the film is uttered) kill people. Jones tries to pass the talisman along to the Department of Defense, but the government agents think he’s nuts. The Soviets, however, want to get their hands on it, and wackiness ensues. Why It’s Fun: Zotz! marked something of a departure for Castle, best known for thrillers and horror movies like The Tingler , The House on Haunted Hill , Homicidal and 13 Ghosts . What really made Castle famous was his love of gimmicks, whether it was insuring his audiences against death by fright, wiring theater seats to buzz unsuspecting patrons or unleashing a giant inflatable skeleton to fly through the theater. With Zotz!, he toned things down a bit, merely handing out replica medallions to audience members. Still, it’s a silly and entertaining comedy, featuring a rare lead role for legendary TV second banana Poston, best known as the doofus foil to Bob Newhart on his various hit sitcoms. Why You Should Buy It (Again): Sony is offering the film through its movies-on-demand (i.e., they don’t make it until you buy it) label “Choice Collection,” which in this case means there aren’t any extras. If you’re interested in Castle, you should instead spring for the William Castle Film Collection box set, which features Zotz! and several other Castle classics as well as a great documentary on the huckster filmmaker: Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story . Alonso Duralde has written about film for The Wrap , Salon and MSNBC.com. He also co-hosts the Linoleum Knife podcast and regularly appears on What The Flick?! (The Young Turks Network) . He is a senior programmer for the Outfest Film Festival in Los Angeles and a pre-screener for the Sundance Film Festival. He also the author of two books: Have Yourself A Movie Little Christmas (Limelight Editions) and 101 Must-See Movies for Gay Men (Advocate Books). Follow Alonso Duralde on Twitter. High And Low: Slapstick Savant Buster Keaton And (Surprise!) Horror Huckster William Castle Bring The Funny
Hope Springs is not what it says on the package. The trailer is all comedy and quirk, but the movie is not. Let’s face it though, the premise is a hard sell. Films about old people are an anathema to mainstream Hollywood. Since the success of Cocoon — which featured its over-50 cast rejuvenated by a swimming pool containing alien pods — movies featuring actors of a certain age are rare, and despite the success of Driving Miss Daisy , It’s Complicated and Meryl Streep’s last Oscar-winning vehicle, The Iron Lady , it is almost impossible to get a film made unless someone under 20 is pivotal to the script. Hope Springs is even more thorny because it is about a particularly unattractive aspect of marriage: Not the falling in love and getting married aspect, or the falling out and getting divorced phase, but rather, the living inside of an unhappy marriage angle. Surely this has to be pretty special to sustain our interest. Despite having the odds stacked against it, Hope Springs is, in parts, raw, moving, brave, audacious and painful thanks to the combined ability of Streep and Jones to commit fully to unhappy suburban mediocrity. Had the movie been made with two different lead actors, I surely believe the movie would have been unwatchable. Streep and Jones play Kay and Arnold, who, after 31 years of marriage, are mired in a relationship that is a form of living death. He is sutured to Golf Tips magazine and slavishly devoted to daily rituals. She follows him around with plates of food like a nurse. They sleep in separate rooms. There is no physical contact between them. They don’t even speak to each other anymore. For their wedding anniversary, they buy each other cable TV. While Arnold is grumpily in denial about the state of his marriage, Kay has the self-awareness to know she is unhappy. She browses Barnes & Noble, finds a book called You Can Have The Marriage You Want and books a week’s worth of intensive marital counseling in Maine with the author Dr Feld (a deadly serious Steve Carell). She then gets on the plane alone and waits to see if her husband will fill the seat beside her. Begrudgingly, Arnold joins his wife, and, unleashing his inner curmudgeon, begins to bitterly complain about the cost of everything related to their therapeutic sojourn. It is in the sessions with Dr Feld that the going really gets tough. From here on in, Hope Springs is like ripping off a series of well-stuck Band-Aids. The pain is palpable as Kay and Arnold discuss the loss of intimacy and their sex life and admit to the loneliness and anger that each suffers. As you might expect, the couple do attempt to resurrect their sex life, but watching this was about as comfortable as contemplating my parents getting it on. I was not alone either: these scenes provoked much nervous laughter at the screening I saw – and yet, the discomfort generated had much to do with the authentic performances that both actors give. Streep, as ever, is extraordinary. Her conviction to character makes Kay frumpy, vulnerable and not particularly bright. She is an ordinary woman without a whiff of glamour, and Streep conveys this with every hand gesture and facial expression. It is Jones’ performance that is the real revelation, however. His character has the furthest distance to travel and watching him do this is at the core of this film’s heart — and its heartbreak. In contrast to the nuanced and powerful work of these two titans, Hope Springs suffers from simplistic framework and some heavy-handed signposting. The soundtrack desperately tries to lift us up where we belong. There are endless shots of watches and clocks — presumably to emphasize the passing or running-out of time. The aesthetic is also very obvious. The suburban drab shifts visually as soon as the couple reach Maine. Dr. Feld’s office floods with sunlight the minute the pair of them have a relationship breakthrough. Then again director David Frankel is not renowned for his subtlety. The representation of the all-American family in Marley and Me made me want to throw myself under a bus. Which leaves us where, exactly? Hope Springs does authentically depict how scary and lonely it is to be inside a failing marriage, and anyone who has endured or witnessed the break-up of a long-term relationship will feel the sting here. In many respects, it’s a subject that deserves Hollywood’s attention and ours as well. Lately, movie audiences have been inundated with younger couples on celluloid that can’t make it past six years ( Celeste and Jesse Forever) or even six months ( Ruby Sparks ). The long run is relatively untapped territory and arguably much more interesting. But Hope Springs does not keep its eye on the prize. The movie is an unsatisfying combination of touching and excruciating, and a large part of the problem stems from Frankel’s attempt to hammer such serious and sensitive subject matter into a half-hearted comedy. Despite Streep and Jones’ honest, moving performances, the movie’s tone is horribly forced — so much so that by the time Annie Lennox’s poignant “Why?” played on the soundtrack, I felt like wailing along with her.
