Referee Beheaded By Angry Fans According to Mail Online A soccer referee in Brazil was gruesomely quartered and beheaded after he fatally stabbed a player on the field during a match. The match took place June 30 at Pius XII stadium in Maranhao, northeastern Brazil. According to Correio24horas, 30-year-old player Josenir dos Santos Abreu approached the 20-year-old referee, Octavio da Silva Catanhede Jordan, to argue a call.The two couldn’t come to terms so Catanhede Jordan told the player to leave the field. Santos Abreu refused and the argument turned heated when the referee allegedly pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed Santos Abreu multiple times. The player died en route to the hospital. Fans outraged by the stabbing – believed to be the player’s friends and family – stormed the pitch and cornered Catanhede Jordan. The mob showed no mercy as they quartered and decapitated the referee and then placed his head on a stake. So far police in Santa Ines, Maranhao have arrested one man, 27-year-old Luis Moraes Souza, in relation to the gruesome crime – but may be looking for two other men named ‘Chiquinho’ and ‘Pirolo’ according to a few other Brazilian blogs. Valter Costa, police chief of Santa Ines, released a statement about the investigation. ‘Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact,’ he said. ‘We will identify and hold accountable all those involved. Chris Clemons Says It Would Be ‘Selfish’ For NFL Player To Be Gay VIa HuffPo reports: There has never been an openly gay player in the NFL, and Seattle Seahawks defensive end Chris Clemons thinks it might be best if it stays that way. In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Clemons said he didn’t think it would be a good idea for a player to come out of the closet while playing professional football, although he insisted he wasn’t homophobic. “Who on Gods earth is this person saying he’s coming out of the closet in the NFL?” tweeted Clemons. Speculation about the possibility of a professional football player coming out picked up this week after a report by Mike Freeman of CBS Sports. “Based on interviews over the past several weeks with current and former players, I’m told that a current gay NFL player is strongly considering coming out publicly within the next few months — and after doing so, the player would attempt to continue his career,” wrote Freeman. He added that the player believes it is “now time for someone to take this step” but is worried about the reaction of homophobic fans. Clemons then explained that he wasn’t against playing with a gay teammate, but he thought coming out of the closet would be a “selfish act” by the player in question. With marriage equality and the Supreme Court dominating news today, rumors are swirling that a current NFL player is considering coming out of the closet, and soon. If a report from Mike Freeman of CBS Sports is to be believed, it would be a controversial and virtually unprecedented move in the world of male-dominated pro sports. Freeman does not name the player, but says if he does come out, he wants to keep playing. He says he’s basing this on interviews with current and former players. Freeman writes, “I’m told this player believes the time is now for someone to take this step – despite the remarks from [49ers defensive back] Chris Culliver .” Controversy arising recently at the Indianapolis Scouting combine, when prospects were asked questions about their sexuality, has proven to be another obstacle. “This player’s true concern, I’m told, is not the reaction inside NFL locker rooms but outside of it. The player fears he will suffer serious harm from homophobic fans.” “That is the only thing preventing him from coming out.” Although there have been celebrated gay athletes – Greg Louganis, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, to name a few – most came out only after their careers were over. Freeman states there has never been an active openly gay player in a major U.S. team sport, but in an era of red equal signs on Facebook , is this about to change? We may soon find out.
