Trishna Takes New York

Trishna star Freida Pinto with IFC Films’ Jonathan Sehring. Photo by Nick Hunt/Patrick McMullan Co. After a long festival run beginning at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall and stops ranging from tests in Abu Dhabi, Tokyo, London, Rome, Hong Kong and Provincetown here in the U.S. Michael Winterbottom’s India-set Trishna will open theatrically beginning this Friday. The Cinema Society hosted an event in New York kicking off its run with a screening and party Tuesday night. So a little bit about the event, which was also co-hosted by Circa and fashion maven Rachel Roy. The IFC Films release is based on the tragic romance novel Tess of the d’Urbevilles . Freida Pinto ( Slumdog Millionaire ) makes a splash in the film, playing eldest daughter, Trishna, in a poor family from Rajasthan, India. She meets Jay (played by Riz Ahmed – Four Lions ), the son of a wealthy property developer who takes up managing the resort at his father’s request. He swoons after meeting Trishna and hires her to work at the resort, slowly winning her affections. Eventually he wins her over, but things go awry and let’s just leave it at that… Pinto introduced the film Tuesday at IFC Center in downtown Manhattan, seemingly embarrassed after IFC Entertainment president Jonathan Sehring told a quick story about his sons who called her ‘the most beautiful woman in the world’ when he told them she’d be at the screening. “I realized how embarrassing it is to listen to someone talk about you,” Pinto said laughing as he came on stage. “Everyone knows how hard it is to get an indie film going. I learned from my first director [Danny Boyle] not to say too much about a film so not to raise expectations…” Following the screening, the party carried on at roof-top nightspot Jimmy at the James Hotel, greeted by D’Usse Cognac. Guests included: Meg Ryan, Dana Delany, Zosia Mamet ( Girls ), Alex Karpovsky ( Girls ), Calvin Klein, Billy Connolly, Russell Simmons, Rachel Roy, Jess Weixler, Tom McCarthy, Carlos Leon, Drena DeNiro, Irina Pantaeva, Sante D’Orazio, Fern Mallis, Daniel Benedict, Genevieve Jones, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Bettina Zilkha, CIRCA co-founder, Chairman & CEO Chris Del Gatto, and Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir.

Greta Gerwig & Stars Turn Out for NYC Premiere of Lola Versus

Current “It-Girl” Greta Gerwig, Joel Kinnaman and Zoe Lister Jones were among the cast who turned up for the New York premiere Tuesday night of director Daryl Wein’s Lola Versus , hosted by the Cinema Society. A bumper crop of other actors and socialites also joined in on the fun at the screening in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, including Zachary Quinto, Noah Baumbach, Olivia Munn, Parker Posey, Russell Simmons, Eve Plumb, Jesse Peretz, Gaby Hoffman, Ed Droste (lead singer of Grizzly Bear) for the screening and after-party at the Boom Boom Room atop the Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking District. In the film, Gerwig plays Lola who is suddenly dumped by her fiance only weeks before their wedding. Her life slowly tailspins as she seeks out close friends for solace and sexual mishaps as she faces turning 30 and being suddenly single. “Zoe [Lister Jones] and I were both single and interested in stories that were honest about break-ups and not just glorified versions of them,” Wein told ML at the Standard Tuesday night. He co-wrote the film along with Lister Jones who co-stars in the film with Gerwig. “Greta is great for the part because she is not an overly-polished lead. She’s vulnerable, likable but still at times unlikable,” he added. Wein said the idea for Lola Versus came to him and Lister-Jones though in the interim other films that deal with being single have cropped up. “There are stories with a feminist [bent] that have come up since then, and we’re all for it. We want more realistic depictions of break-ups and being single to be out there.” Not quite so single in real-life, Gerwig danced with her current beau Noah Baumbach at the party, which was co-hosted Brooks Brothers and Grey Goose along with Cinema Society and its founder Andrew Saffir. Of course there were signature vodka cocktails and the champagne and spectacular Manhattan views kept the soiree going well passed midnight. Fox Searchlight will open Lola Versus in limited release beginning this Friday. [ Photo Credit: Nick Hunt/Patrick McMullan Co. ]

The Avengers Will Close the Tribeca Film Festival, Play Host to ‘Local Heroes’

The Tribeca Film Festival has announced The Avengers as the closing-night selection of its 11th annual event, where Joss Whedon’s summer superhero blockbuster will have its New York premiere on April 28 — and for a good cause, according to Marvel and fest organizers. “Honoring the spirit of the Tribeca Film Festival, the screening will allow the opportunity for Marvel’s The Avengers to celebrate everyday heroes from police agencies, fire departments, first responders and various branches of the U.S. military,” reads a statement just over the transom at ML HQ. “These local heroes will have an opportunity to attend the screening and meet the cast.” Marvel Studios’ producer Kevin Feige adds: “We all know and love our iconic Super Heroes, but when it really counts, it’s our real-life heroes who save the world every day by making it a better place for all of us.” Whedon, meanwhile, reacted with customary cheekiness: “Showing at Tribeca is both an honor and a double homecoming for me, who grew up in Manhattan, and for the movie, which wrapped production there. I’m thoroughly psyched to be closing the festival with our intimate little think-piece.” More to come at Movieline as Tribeca gets underway next month. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter .
