‘I still want so much more, and there’s so much more to get,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of Savage Journey to the American Dream. On March 30, the bearded Maybach spitter dropped Savage Journey to the American Dream. “I named it Savage Journey to the American Dream because that’s just what I’ve been through,” Stalley told Mixtape Daily. “I’ve been searching for that American dream, and I’ve been on a savage hunt for it for the past year.” Stalley first began making a name for himself in 2009 when he dropped MadStalley: The Autobiography, a mixtape he released with Mickey Factz’s GFC camp, on which he rhymed over classic Madlib productions. It was a subtle yet effective shot that would help Stalley make a name for himself in quite a few influential rap circles. After linking with Damon Dash’s DD172 outfit and recording alongside guys like Mos Def and Curren$y, the Ohio native found his lane and released Lincoln Way Nights in 2011. It was his most notable release and helped him get noticed by Rick Ross . “One of my goals was to be a signed artist, and now I’m with MMG and Warner Bros.,” he said. “I thought that things would calm down and I would kinda be satisfied with that, but I still want so much more and there’s so much more to get.” On Savage Journey, Stalley navigates through the pitfalls that await young rappers. “Lane to lane switchin’, keep these lames and dames at distance/ Eight-cylinder pistons, it’s money talkin’, listen/ And it’s tellin’ me go get it, and I’ve been on my way,” he spits on the moody “Route 21.” Curren$y shows up on the car-themed “Hammers & Vogues,” and on “Lover’s Lane,” Stalley makes a pit stop after getting sidetracked by some overzealous females. Stalley gets props, holding down most of the mixtape by himself, but he of course gets help from his MMG family. Rozay and Meek Mill show up for the Block Beattaz-produced “BCGMMG,” and Wale lends a helping hand on “Home to You.” Whether Stalley will ultimately see his dream fulfilled remains to be seen, but with his underground rep already solidified, there’s nowhere to go but up. Stalley Makes Music For His Ohio Hometown To ‘Ride Out To’

‘This is something I wanted to give back,’ rapper tells Mixtape Daily about Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music). By Jayson Rodriguez Stalley Photo: Jan Ferrer Main Pick Street King : Stalley Holding It Down For : Massillon, OH Mixtape : Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music) Real Spit : Stalley is a hometown hero. He might have moved out of his home state of Ohio, first by taking a scholarship to play hoops at the University of Michigan then later at Long Island University. But his heart never left Massillon, a blue-collar town bred on basketball and football dreams. For his latest project, Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music), he recruited a fellow Ohioan, producer Rashad, and the two created the soundtrack to Massillon’s night life. “It’s paying homage to my hometown, and in my hometown there’s a street called Lincoln Way that everyone cruises on Friday and Saturday nights, showing off the cars, whether it’s an old muscle car or a new-school paint-up car with a loud system. This is something I wanted to give back, as far as a music project, for that strip. Something that people can actually ride out to or be that soundtrack to that journey.” Start it up. Stalley Is Shooting For Greatness On Lincoln Way Nights

Ohio native gave up NBA aspirations and tells Mixtape Daily, ‘I’m more than an MC.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Stalley Photo: Courtesy of Stalley Fire Starter: Stalley In person, upstart rapper Stalley is unassuming and measured. But once the former high school sports star gets in the booth, he delivers with the same kind of authority that landed him on the University of Michigan men’s basketball team. Now, on the cusp of releasing his next project, Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music), a mixtape set to drop in February, the Ohio native is poised to make the transition from underground sensation to starter. “I’m more than an MC, I’m actually a writer. I can write songs. I can write good songs, and that’s what I want to do,” Stalley told Mixtape Daily. “That’s what I did on this project. I wrote out full songs, with ill concepts, ill lyrics and ill beats. Everything is put together. I want to be a great American writer, not just an MC, not just a rapper. So to be that, is just amazing to me.” The Creative Control/ Ski Beatz affiliate first made noise last year with his Madlib-inspired project, MadStalley: The Autobiography. Since then, he’s made his mark in a variety of ways, including blog partnerships with Slam magazine and HighSnobiety, a clothing sponsorship with 10 Deep and putting out the rumbling track “Hercules.” Now, three years after giving his undivided attention to hip-hop — back-to-back injuries at Michigan and then Long Island University shifted his focus — he’s beginning to see the payoff. That decision wasn’t easy for the Massillon native: His Ohio hometown is obsessive about high school sports (check the movie “Go Tigers” ), but Stalley was able to channel that intensity into the laidback Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music) collection. “When you’re someone known to be a lyricist, when you’re writing certain music, it comes off as dumbing it down,” he explained of searching for a sound over punchlines. “And people are confused, ‘Is this good?’ ‘Cause you’re used to this super lyrical dude. I took that and put it to the side and was just me. I spoke my story in a deeper way over deeper beats. So, I’m really happy with it. I’m becoming the artist I want to be.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Stalley, Rick Ross
