Terminally Ill 5-Year-Old Dies in Santa’s Arms

It’s hard to imagine a more convincing Santa Claus than Knoxville, Tennessee resident Eric Schmitt-Matzen. With his long white beard, easy smile, and 6-foot, 300-pound frame, Schmitt-Matzen is like a Saint Nick drawing come to life. But the most important similarity between Schmitt-Matzen and every kids’ favorite gift-giver has nothing to with appearance, and everything to do with the ability to spread joy to children, even in the most difficult of circumstances. Schmitt-Matzen recently shared a heartbreaking tale with the Knoxville News Sentinel about the dying wish of a 5-year-old boy who loved Christmas. The 60-year-old says he received an urgent request from a Knoxville area nurse, who told him that the boy had informed staff that what he wanted more than anything in the world was a final visit from Santa. “[A local nurse] said there was a very sick 5-year-old boy who wanted to see Santa Claus,” Schmitt-Matzen tells the paper. “I told her, ‘Okay, just let me change into my outfit.’ She said, ‘There isn’t time for that. Your Santa suspenders are good enough. Come right now.’ ” Upon arriving, Schmitt-Matzen instructed staff and visitors that it was crucial they maintain their composure: “I sized up the situation and told everyone, ‘If you think you’re going to lose it, please leave the room,'” he says. “If I see you crying, I’ll break down and can’t do my job.’” It’s not hard to see why Schmitt-Matzen experienced a moment of self doubt, but those present say that from the moment he entered the sick child’s room, he never broke character for an instant: “‘Say, what’s this I hear about you’re gonna miss Christmas?'” the professional Santa recalls telling the boy. “There’s no way you can miss Christmas! Why, you’re my Number One elf!’” The frightened child informed Schmitt-Matzen that he had been told he was going to die, and was filled with questions: “‘They say I’m gonna die. How can I tell when I get to where I’m going?’” the boy asked. “‘When you get there, you tell ’em you’re Santa’s Number One elf, and I know they’ll let you in.’” Schmitt-Matzen replied. The two hugged, and the boy uttered his final words: View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Passed Away in 2016: Gone, But Not Forgotten “Santa, can you help me?” “I wrapped my arms around him. Before I could say anything, he died right there. I let him stay, just kept hugging and holding on to him,” Schmitt-Matzen explained. “Everyone outside the room realized what happened. His mother ran in. She was screaming, ‘No, no, not yet!’ I handed her son back and left as fast as I could.” Schmitt-Matzen says he initially felt that he would never be able to portray Santa again after such a life-changing experience, but had a change of heart after suiting up again for a group of children. “When I saw all those children laughing, it brought me back into the fold. It made me realize the role I have to play,” Schmitt-Matzen said. “For them and for me.”

Police Fatally Shoot Homeowner After He Shoots Intruder A Texas man who shot and killed a burglar who attempted to rob his home is now dead after police fatally shot him when arriving to scene and “not realizing” that the gun-wielding man was defending his home. via Fox News A Texas homeowner was shot dead by police after he shot and killed a career criminal who broke into his home Thursday night, authorities say. The Dallas Morning News reports police did not realize 57-year-old William Keith Hall was defending his home when they arrived, and that Hall ignored the officers’ repeated demands he drop his weapon. Maj. Jeff Cotner tells the paper Hall pointed a pistol at police officers and witnesses on the scene, and that he had plenty of time to “de-escalate the situation.” “He was given plenty of notice, and he didn’t choose a path other than to confront officers,” Cotner said. Hall also allegedly pointed his gun at a contractor working on a house nearby who called 911 after hearing the shots. The caller, later identified as David Humphrey, told authorities Hall was yelling at witnesses to get away from the man who allegedly broke into his home, identified as 30-year-old Jerry Wayne Hale, after he shot him. Humphrey said Hall tried to fire at the witnesses but his gun was apparently jammed. Justin Bieber and Ozzy Osbourne Film Super Bowl Ad

Justin Bieber can check another icon off his list after working with Black Sabbath singer and music legend Ozzy Osbourne for a Super Bowl commercial. The Best Buy ad will feature Ozzy and Biebs wearing ‘Tron’-esque suits. PEOPLE writes that the commercial was filmed Jan. 17. That same day, Bieber posted some cryptic, excited tweets to his 6.9 million followers, throwing down the hashtag #todaywasepic. According to USA Today, the 30-second ad will run in the third quarter of the Super Bowl. “Justin Bieber is the biggest star out there, but that’s not why he’s in the spot,” Best Buy marketing chief Drew Panayiotou told the newspaper. “He symbolically represents something important to the brand message.” Bieber will appear in more Best Buy spots throughout 2011. USA Today contends Bieber is using the spot as “a serious bid to move beyond the world of tween heartbreaker.” ‘Branded: The Buying and Selling of Teenagers’ author Alissa Quart tells the paper Biebs and Oz “are both fish out of water in what we imagine a Super Bowl ad should be: babes and beer.” Ozzy proved he’s in touch with today’s popular performers by commenting on the potential overexposure of Lady Gaga, telling Us Weekly, “I like her, but I’m getting a bit sick of her. When I turn on the TV, I see her wearing another lamp shade or whatever. She needs to take a break, I think, for an hour or so.” ► Read PopEater’s recent interview with Ozzy Osbourne http://xml.channel.aol.com/xmlpublisher/fetch.v2.xml?option=expand_relative_urls&dataUrlNodes=uiConfig,feedConfig,entry&id=775255&pid=775254&uts=1273239596 http://www.popeater.com/mm_track/popeater/music/?s_channel=us.musicpop&s_account=aolpopeater,aolsvc&omni=1&ke=1 http://cdn.channel.aol.com/cs_feed_v1_6/csfeedwrapper.swf Caught in Action: Celebrities Hard at Work Jon Hamm, star of the hit series “Mad Men”, is spotted filming scenes for the upcoming season.
