Sharon Carpenter Tells BOSSIP What It’s Like To Work On Empire Set Television reporter Sharon Carpenter moved from journalism to primetime, making her acting debut on tonight’s Empire. Carpenter’s character is host of the fictional show “Sippin’ The Tea,” and lands an interview with Jamal Lyon, played by Jussie Smollett. “We are presenting Jussie to the world as a bonafide star for the first time,” Carpenter explained. “He’s reached that level of stardom. He reveals some things that he never said before, and it could end dramatically.” Lee Daniels handpicked the former Revolt reporter for the scene with Smollett, which was shot in a day last summer at Empire’s soundstage in Chicago. Carpenter, whose new website, Wiretapped, covers all aspects of pop culture, said her nerves kicked in once Empire co-star Taraji P. Henson arrived to watch her film. “I started to get a little nervous, but everyone made me feel comfortable,” she said. “I think they’ve realized what the secret is, taking the pressure off and saying kind and supportive words. Once you take that pressure off, it makes people more comfortable to perform.”
