Some of us on this blog have rooting interests that lie far from where The Schuylkill and The Delaware meet. They’re up past the New Jersey Turnpike, all the way to New York City. For us, ever since the echoes of the Giants’ raucous ride through the Canyon of Heroes faded, it’s been all about the Knicks and Linsanity! And after watching the Linsane 3-pointer to win the game last night, we must admit… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Drug and Device Law Discovery Date : 15/02/2012 16:14 Number of articles : 2

‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’ Actor Recovering As Show Goes On

Stuntman Christopher Tierney is walking again after suffering multiple broken bones in a fall during a performance last week. By Terri Schwartz “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” Photo: Marvel Thanks to new safety measures put in place on the set of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” the Broadway musical’s preview shows continued on without incident over the holiday weekend. Several “Spider-Man” performances were canceled last week after stuntman and aerialist Christopher Tierney fell an estimated 20 feet and suffered severe injuries during a show last Monday (December 20). Tierney’s father, Timothy, told The New York Times in a phone interview on Friday that his son walked for the first time since the accident with the help of a walker and a brace. The actor had undergone back surgery on Wednesday to treat three fractured vertebrae he sustained in the fall, and had been expected to remain in the intensive care unit of New York’s Bellevue Hospital Center until Monday (December 27). Christopher Tierney also suffered a hairline fracture in his skull, a broken scapula, a broken bone close to his elbow, four broken ribs and a bruised lung. “My understanding is that Chris is fortunate to be alive,” Timothy explained to The Times . Apparently, the 31-year-old had been falling headfirst from a platform after the safety tether to his harness malfunctioned, but he managed to land on his right side in the basement below the stage of the venue — the Foxwoods Theater in Times Square. Timothy Tierney also spoke with The Associated Press about his son’s injury, and said that the musical’s cast and crew were “eagerly waiting [Chris’s] return. “He just felt so blessed to be part of this whole creative process, and he just cannot wait to get back and perform in the show,” Timothy added. Timothy also said doctors were “cautiously optimistic” that his son would eventually resume his career, but the performer will take a while to heal. “We just feel very blessed that Chris is alive and well, and thank goodness that he knew enough to roll onto his right side and land that way rather than land on his head or back,” Timothy said. “Some people fall from a lesser height than Chris and suffer more damage, even fatal damage.” On Wednesday, meanwhile, “Spider-Man” director Julie Taymor issued a statement and wished Tierney a safe recovery. Preview performances continue at the Foxwoods Theater this week as the days tick closer to the musical’s planned official opening on February 7 . The $65 million production features music written by U2’s Bono and The Edge.

‘Spider-Man’ Musical To Resume With New Safety Measures

Show was dark on Wednesday in the wake of actor’s injury. By Gil Kaufman “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” poster Photo: Marvel In the wake of serious injuries during a preview performance, producers of the troubled “Spider-Man” Broadway musical met with officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the New York State Department of Labor on Wednesday to put new safety measures in place for the ambitious $65 million production. Reuters reported that following the meetings, new safety procedures were put into place in an attempt to avoid the kind of accident that injured 31-year-old aerialist Christopher Tierney . The performer fell 20 feet after a safety cable malfunctioned during a show on Monday and was hospitalized in serious condition. Among the new rules enacted are a requirement to have a second stagehand and stage manager to back up all of the show’s 38 stunts involving harnesses and ropes. “All of these accidents are a result of safety and health systems failures,” said Maureen Cox, director of safety and health for the New York State Department of Labor. The performers union Actors Equity Association said the fall that injured Tierney was caused by human error, though it did not specify what that error was. The show’s director, Julie Taymor, released a statement Tuesday reiterating the importance of safety on the stage of the show, which has been plagued by a series of missed opening dates and injuries to four performers. “I am so thankful that Chris is going to be all right and is in great spirits,” Taymor said. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our Spider-Man family and we’ll continue to do everything in our power to protect the cast and crew.” Cox said the investigation into what caused Tierney to fall and whether there were any safety codes broken is ongoing. “At this point, we are satisfied that they have put in the appropriate controls,” Cox said of the new safety measures. “If they are not comfortable and haven’t got everything in place, we have agreed that they wouldn’t go, and so apparently that is the position that they are in right now.” As of now, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” preview performances will proceed as planned on Thursday (December 23), and the official Broadway opening date has been pushed back from January 11 to February 7. Wednesday’s matinee and evening shows were the only performances canceled due to Tierney’s injury.

‘Spider-Man’ Musical Director Speaks Out On Injuries

‘An accident like this is obviously heartbreaking for our entire team,’ Julie Taymor says in statement. By Terri Schwartz Julie Taymor Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ WireImage There’s been a lot of negative press about Julie Taymor’s Broadway musical “Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark,” after a fourth castmember, aerialist and stunt double Christopher Tierney , was injured during a preview performance on Monday. A spokesperson for the show made a statement on Tuesday and the Actors’ Equity Association spoke to MTV News about the show’s streak of injuries . And now Taymor has commented about the show’s continued bad luck. “An accident like this is obviously heartbreaking for our entire team and, of course, to me personally,” Taymor said in her statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter . “I am so thankful that Chris is going to be alright and is in great spirits. Nothing is more important than the safety of our ‘Spider-Man’ family and we’ll continue to do everything in our power to protect the cast and crew.” Tierney’s injury spurred the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Actors’ Equity Association and New York State Department of Labor to meet with the “Spider-man” company on Tuesday and institute additional safety measures to prevent further injuries. But some other Broadway stars took to their social networking accounts to demand Taymor stop production on the $65 million musical. “SPIDERMAN SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF ITSELF. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE AND EMBARRASSING TO WORKING ACTORS EVERYWHERE,” Tony Award-winning actress Alice Ripley tweeted on Tuesday. “DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE? WHERE IS THE LINE FOR THE DECISION MAKERS, I AM CURIOUS.” “Rent” star Adam Pascal took to his Facebook page Tuesday and said, “I have to weigh in on Spiderman. They should put Julie Taymor in jail for assault! I know what it’s like to fall and get hurt in front of 2,000 people. It’s no fun, but at least it was the one time it happened. I hope whoever was hurt is ok and sues the sh– out of Julie, Bono, Edge and every other a–hole who invested in that steaming pile of actor crippling sh–!” Pascal toned down his anger and clarified his comments on Wednesday (December 22): “I think some of you missed the intended humor in my post, although my anger is real, I don’t think anyone should sue Bono and the Edge you dummy! Or put Julie Taymor in jail you double dummy. I was making a point.” As of now, “Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark” preview performances are proceeding as planned, and the official Broadway opening date has been pushed back from January 11 to February 7. Wednesday’s matinee was the only performance canceled due to Tierney’s injury. Do you think “Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark” should be canceled due to the danger involved? Tell us in the comments.
