Exclusive: Mario Talks ‘Millennium Tour’ With B2K & Working On The RENT Live Musical On FOX

Read the original post:

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN On Sunday, January 27 at 8/7c, the popular, classic musical RENT will be coming to FOX as a live televised musical for the first time ever. Following the likes of The Wiz and Jesus Christ Superstar,  RENT: Live will give fans from all over the world the chance to watch the Broadway classic be performed live, right in front of their television screens. The cast in the 2019 reboot includes:  Jordan Fishe r as Mark Cohen,  Brennin Hunt as Roger Davis, Tinashe  as Mimi Marquez,  Brandon Victor Dixon  as Tom Collins, Drag Race’s Valentina  as Angel Dumott Schunard,  Vanessa Hudgens  as Maureen Johnson,   Kiersey Clemons  as Joanne Jefferson and for the first time in his career, R&B singer  Mario  stars in his first musical as Benjamin Coffin III. We got the opportunity to sit down with Mario and talk to him about how it feels to pop his stage play cherry live in front of the entire world. Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN For Mario, he wasn’t a really big Broadway fan, so like many non-Broadway enthusiasts, he wasn’t familiar with RENT at first. “It wasn’t until after my first audition that I actually saw [RENT],” Mario admits. “I’ve been hearing ‘Seasons of Love’ all my life, just in the background, knowing the song but having not really watched the movie.” However, when the opportunity presented itself for Mario to audition, he took a moment to see the film and found himself identifying with the character Benny. He says, “Now that I’ve seen the movie and now that I know that I’m playing Benny’s part, I found relation to him, coming from Baltimore, growing up in poverty-stricken areas, leaving when I was 15 years old, and going back a few years later thinking to myself, ‘What can I do to change the circumstances of some of these kids growing up in the city.’” Mario also discusses how he’s given back to his hometown of Baltimore. “I started the Do Right Foundation where I was working with the children of substance abused parents because I experienced that,” says Mario. “In that way, I can relate to Benny in the fact that he sees a brighter future for the East Village. His way of going about it is a little harsh. But, I started there and I’ve just been building on the character ever since then.” Source: FOX / Getty Mario admits that before RENT, he never really had aspirations of wanting to get into theater, however,  after being asked to audition for the musical “Hair”, the thought eventually crossed his mind. Unfortunately, he never pursued it further but that’s what makes RENT even better. It’s something completely new. As far as whether or not Mario plans to go on Broadway, the singer says that he’d love to do more one-off shows like the live showing of RENT on FOX, but he’s not ready to take on Broadway full time. “I probably won’t do traveling theater,” he said. “I have a lot of musical aspirations. I’m going on tour after this. I’m putting another project out as well. I’m just going to continue to evolve and hopefully along that path I’ll have more experiences like RENT.” The tour Mario is referring to is the upcoming Millennium Tour alongside B2K, Pretty Ricky, Chingy and others. The nostalgic R&B tour sold out in several cities, with promoters having to add additional dates. When asked how he feels about being back on stage with some of his old friends, Mario says, “I’ve been so focused on RENT, I don’t know how it feels yet. I’ve literally been in this world. But when I think about it, for me, it’s more exciting for me to get to see the fans. I’m excited about the fans! I’m excited to see how excited they are. It’s a weird time for R&B right now and I think that although R&B is making a comeback right now, this is an exciting moment for R&B fans who remember the Scream Tour. I’m also excited to get back out there and introduce some new music.” Make sure you tune in to FOX on Sunday, January 27th at 8/7c to watch Mario make his musical debut on RENT.

Andrew Gillium’s Second Debate Against Ron DeSantis Takes On A New Sense Of Urgency

Excerpt from:

E xpect the Republican nominee for Florida governor Ron DeSantis to come out swinging against Democratic nominee Andrew Gillum in their second debate scheduled for Wednesday night. See Also: 5 Takeaways From Andrew Gillum’s Masterful Debate Dismantling Of Ron DeSantis Broward College will host the debate, which starts at 7 p.m. EST. It will be live streamed on WPBF’s website and rebroadcast on C-SPAN for those outside the local viewing area, according to the Sun-Sentinel . My opponent is trying to do everything he can to distract & use smear tactics—but the second debate is tonight & here’s what I’ll be ready to talk about: issues that Floridians care about. I’m running for governor to represent all of them & no distractions can change that. — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 24, 2018 Gillum, who could become the state’s first African-American governor if elected, decidedly out-dueled DeSantis in the first debate on Sunday night. But the Trump-backed candidate has new ammunition to fire at the Tallahassee mayor. Text messages made public on Tuesday about tickets to the Broadway musical Hamilton appear to contradict statements Gillum made during the first debate, the Sun-Sentinel reported . Questions surrounding the source of the tickets are part of an FBI probe into possible Tallahassee government corruption, in which Gillum is reportedly not the target of the investigation. Still, DeSantis used the FBI investigation to attack Gillum at Sunday’s debate. A poll released on Tuesday found that Gillum has a four-point lead over DeSantis, which could help to explain why DeSantis hasn’t hesitated to use race instead of ideas to defeat Gillum. Less than 24 hours after winning the GOP nomination in August, DeSantis blew a racist dog whistle when he warned Florida voters not to “monkey this up” by voting for Gillum. Not long after, white supremacists answered the whistle by sending out racist robocalls. Another series of robocalls attacking Gillum went out during Sunday’s debate. DeSantis has a long history of associating with white nationalists. Ahead of their first debate, Gillum called on DeSantis to stick to the issues. He’s made that request again. The Tallahassee mayor was head and shoulders above DeSantis on policy questions Sunday. For example, Gillum displayed his masterful knowledge on taxes and Medicaid , which are hot button issues for Floridians. Monumental Moves: Kenan Thompson Lands His Own NBC Comedy After 15 Year ‘SNL’ Run

Photo by Christopher Polk/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images Kenan Thompson Is Working On His Own Show Kenan Thompson  is having an amazing year, and he’s only just getting started. After grabbing his very first Emmy nomination ahead of his 16th season with  Saturday Night Live , the 40-year-old comedian is now set to star in his very own primetime comedy. This is a major move from the sketch comedy show’s longest-running cast member of all time, who just set the record last year. According to reports from Deadline ,  Thompson is going to star in an NBC single-camera series,  Saving Larry , which is about a widowed father of two children. His father-in-law is also there to provide support, whether Thompson’s character likes that or not. The series comes from  SNL  creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels, his Broadway Video company, and  Superstore  executive producer Jackie Clarke, who wrote the series. The series hasn’t gotten a full order yet, but the network is starting with a significant production commitment. But with this new gig comes some potentially sad news. Thompson, who is the longest running cast member in SNL ‘s history, might have to end his tenure with this move. In an interview earlier this year with  The Hollywood Reporter , he said, “I think about leaving and I fear it. This is such a special place, you want to do your part here, but you also want to make room for people that are coming behind you. This was the first year I really started feeling like, ‘OK, I could push out of it now.’ I’m not overly excited about going back to auditioning.” The comedian also expressed his desire for getting into dramatic films in another interview. “I would love to take the Tom Hanks approach,” he said to  Deadline  just last month. “Do a bunch of comedy and then turn into the biggest movie star ever. That would be so awesome.” With his new series on the way, Kenan is certainly headed in his very own Tom Hanks-like direction. Congrats on the new gig!

Robert Guillaume Dies; Benson & The Lion King Actor Was 89

Sad news out of Hollywood today, as Emmy-winning actor Robert Guillaume has passed away at the age of 89. Reports of Guillaume’s death were confirmed this afternoon by his wife of 31 years, Donna Guillaume. You may not be familiar with Guillaume’s name, but if you’re a film and television fan, you’ve almost certainly encountered and enchanted by his work. For seven seasons, Guillaume portrayed the title character on the ABC sitcom Benson , a spinoff of the popular series Soap , on which he also starred. His work on the two shows earned Guillaume a pair of Emmys. While Benson may be the role fans most commonly associate with Guillaume, the Broadway alum went on to produce decades of acclaimed work on both stage and screen after his signature series came to an end. Almost as well known for his rich baritone voice as he was for his comic timing, Benson was nominated for a Tony for his work in a 1977 production of Guys and Dolls . Guillaume later became the first African-American actor to play the title role in The Phanton of the Opera . To younger fans, he’s perhaps best known as the voice of Rafiki in the 1994 Disney animated classic The Lion King . Throughout the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, Guillaume remained a television staple appearing in guest roles on such popular series as Good Times , The Jeffersons , Sanford and Son , Saved By The Bell: The College Years,   The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and A Different World . In his later years, Guillaume appeared in Tim Burton’s Big Fish , and was a regular on the short-lived, but critically-acclaimed Aaron Sorkin sitcom Sports Night. After suffering a stroke in 1999, Guillaume returned to Sports Night , and his slight speech impairment and reliance upon a cane were written into the show in a memorable story arc. The actor was widely applauded by health advocacy groups for his honest and courageous portrayal of life after a stroke. All told, Guillaume racked up nearly 100 screen credits over the course of his 50-year career. He is survived by his wife and four children. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2017: In Memoriam
