How Black Hollywood Is Failing The Black Press

Image via Danielle James/iONEDigital How Black Hollywood Is Failing The Black Press This article was written by staff writer and producer Keyaira Kelly and was originally published by our iONE sister site Hello Beautiful . I was a budding journalist nervously going over my iPhone notes for my first red carpet interview when I noticed it. I was proudly standing on the HelloBeautiful place marker waiting for the behind-the-scenes chaos to begin, when I spotted around my feet the strategic placements of almost every other Black outlet in the space. It doesn’t take a veteran to realize the Black press cluster at the end of red carpet lineups makes Black reporters susceptible to the brush-by of celebs and publicists who politely quip, “sorry, ran out of time” as they scurry out of view. Black media often receives rushed statements, or no comment at all, even though that same Black celebrity stopped for E! Online just moments ago. The strategic cafeteria table-esque segregation of Black press on red carpets is one of many micro-aggressions we face as Black journalists. And while being placed at the tail-end of a carpet is more indicative of the predominately White media system and its value assessment of Black press, these oversights are even more hurtful when they come from your own people. The fact is, too many of our Black celebrities are simply not supporting us. Most, if not all, Black celeb power seeds in our communities. The dominant corporations and media powers-that-be mine our talent and resources for the “next big thing.” And Black media celebrates when our people are plucked out of our silos and make it. We cheer as they float up into mainstream heaven with the hopes that, as they ascend, that they will still feel our loose grips on their balloon strings and tug back. But all too often, that mutual support just isn’t felt. In many cases, once a celebrity passes a certain status, they completely forget about those same Black media outlets who were among the first to cover them and their talents. We live in an age where social capital immediately translates into monetary capital. Re-tweets and shares translate into clicks, which drive traffic and advertising dollars and revenue. That’s the reality of our business model. So when small teams of Black journalists take the time and effort to profile a Black celebrity with a large reach and that content isn’t shared with the influencer’s audiences, the impact reverberates through us all. Just a simple scan of some of your favorite Black celebs Twitter and IG feeds and you would discover links to and RTs of interviews they did with White outlet after White outlet, while Black-owned, Black-run press is often omitted from the conversation. I don’t write this with the intent to say the erasure is entirely malicious or even conscious. The lure of White validation is something we’ve all been conditioned to seek. In 2016, Very Smart Brothas writer Damon Young, unpacked how he, and many other Black people, subconsciously value “the attention of the mainstream platforms more than the Black ones”–even if they don’t show us the same love back. We still throw up our hands in outrage when we lose Oscars and Grammys and Golden Globes to mediocre White talent, when in reality those systems were never created to celebrate us in the first place. After Beyoncés “Lemonade” album of the year Grammy snub in 2016, Solange echoed this sentiment urging black folks to “Create your own committees, build your own institutions, give your friends awards, award yourself, and be the gold you wanna hold my g’s.” Black press was born from that same place of urgency. Early 19th-century Black newspapers like the Freedom’s Journal, the North Star and the Frederick Douglas Papers sought to inform Black people from Black perspectives during a time when literacy rates were dismal among our people. After thriving for a century, many Black newspapers folded, unable to attract advertising dollars in the midst of economic crisis. Fortunately, the spirit of those early Black media outlets were reincarnated digitally, with outlets like The Root, Ebony, The Grio, Blavity, Black Voices, Madame Noire, Essence, and HelloBeautiful’s own parent company iOne Digital now carrying the torch and commitment to telling our stories our way. In a time where the press and freedom of speech are under attack more than ever before in modern history, the support from our communities and our celebrities is indispensable. When we say Black Lives Matter, we have to talk about this statement beyond the clutches of police brutality: behind every one of our bylines is a Black life. Black jobs matter. Black families matter. Black POVs matters. Black ownership matters. #BlackPressMatters. And when you have a company, like iOne Digital, which is one of the few remaining Black-owned media companies in the country, snubbed or not acknowledged for our coverage and support of Black interests, it eats away at the foundation of success that keeps our communities alive. So Black celebs, my brothers and sisters, I urge you to pay attention to the Black journalist at the end of the carpet nervously holding her recorder waiting to snag a quote from you. Tell your publicist that you want to give equal time to People Mag and MadameNoire. Google your name and make a note to retweet or share the latest article from the small Black women’s website that can’t get enough of your style choices. When breaking news happens, make it a point to share coverage from the black perspective as well as the big headline from CNN. After you complete an interview, post that photo inside our small studios and don’t forget to tag our brands. We’re all in this together. And nobody wins when the family forgets. Editor’s note: We truly hope this message sinks in with all of our beloved Black celebrities

Kim Kardashian: I’m a #MomOfThree Now!!!!!!!

For Kim Kardashian, the third time is charming. As previously reported, the reality star and her rapper of a husband welcomed another child into the world on Monday, as a surrogate gave birth to a healthy baby girl. She weighed in at seven pounds and six ounces – and, no, we’ll stop you right there… … we don’t know her name just yet. (But Sky West has a nice and appropriate ring to it, wouldn’t you say?) Kardashian chose not to get pregnant again due to a medical condition known as placenta accreta. This caused her to have a pair of uncomfortable and even dangerous pregnancies with her first two kids, as doctors advised against the couple trying for a third via natural conception. Hence, the surrogate. “She’s here!” Kardashian declared in extra-large type on her Twitter account. “We’re so in love.” She then added: “Kanye and I are happy to announce the arrival of our healthy, beautiful baby girl. “We are incredibly grateful to our surrogate who made our dreams come true with the greatest gift one could give and to our wonderful doctors and nurses for their special care.” The celebrity gossip world now awaits the very first photo of baby number-three. In the meantime, however, Kim has taken to social media once more in order to express her excitement. On Tuesday night, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star Tweeted a photo of herself on her wildly popular Instagram page, writing as a very simple caption along with it: #momofthree. It’s true. It’s a fact. Some followers reacted to this photo with criticism that Kim dared to share a picture of herself, as opposed to her child… but give her a break, critics. The baby was only just born! Can we give Kim at least some time as a new mother before we try to go back into parent-shaming mode? Sheesh! The former sex tape star also posted an image of a pink cake decorated with pink flowers given to her by her mother, Kris Jenner, on her Instagram stories. “Thank you mom,” she wrote as a caption. The new child joins four-year old North and two-year old Saint in this famous family. And she’ll soon get a couple cousins! Khloe Kardashian has confirmed she’s pregnant and is expecting in March. Kylie Jenner has not yet confirmed the same thing, but we all know she’s also pregnant and also even due around this time same. How crazy krazy, right? We’d like to wish both women the very best of luck as they enter the final stages of their pregnancy and we’d also like to send our best wishes to Kim and Kanye. We don’t always see eye to eye on things with the couple… but they’re parents again! How exciting! Congrats, you guys. View Slideshow: The Kardashians Confess: 15 Things You Didn’t Know About Us

Jill Duggar: Slammed By Fans For ANOTHER Parenting Fail!

Jill Duggar just can’t seem to catch a break these days. As if it’s not bad enough that her husband, Derick Dillard, has been fired by TLC after bullying a transgender teen on Twitter, now it looks like Jill might soon be jobless as well. Yes, Derick says his wife will be joining him in stepping away from the spotlight, and while that might mean things are soon to get a little leaner around the Dillard household, there may be some benefits to the new arrangement. For instance, perhaps Jill’s parenting won’t be subject to quite as much scrutiny now that her family is no longer on TV. Ha! Just kidding! As long as she continues posting on Instagram, new Jill Duggar parenting controversy will continue to pop up at the rate of about one per week. The latest might not be as scandalous as the time Jill put a tortilla on her son’s head , but it’s still got Duggar obsessives all worked up. A photo from Thanksgiving has once again caught the attention of the internet’s finest mommy-shamers, and again, they’re filled with seething rage. Yes, for reasons that aren’t entirely clear, the issue of Jill putting her kid on the floor is once again being raised. Some fans seem to not realize the pic is several months old. Others are just leaping at the chance to once again look down their nose at Jill. In both cases, the argument remains pretty much the same: Jill is terrible for leaving her kid on the floor while the rest of the family eats dinner. It’s a bit of reach, considering we know nothing about the context of the pic, but that hasn’t stopped fans from really going off on the mother of two. “Jill enjoys procreating, but once the baby is born, she’s not interested in the least in the actual parenting,” one person wrote on Facebook over the weekend. “How about a carrier or swing — something besides the dirty floor? I would have never done that to either of my children.” Is the floor actually dirty? Who knows. Does it matter? Obviously not. Look, we’re not ones to jump to the Duggars’ defense, but it does seem like Jill’s not really getting a fair shake here. And it’s important to save your outrage, because we’re really due for a legitimate Duggar scandal any day now. Watch Counting On online for more from reality TV’s most controversial family. Dolores O’Riordan Dies; Cranberries Singer Was 46

Dolores O’Riordan, lead singer of the popular Irish rock band the Cranberries, has passed away at the age of 46. Reps for O’ Riordan confirmed the news of her death just moments ago. O’Riordan’s passing has been described as “sudden,” and the cause of death is currently unknown to the public. The singer was reportedly in London for a recording session and was rushed to a local hospital, where medical staff were unable to resuscitate her. Known for her distinctive mezzo-soprano voice, O’Riordan replaced the Cranberries original lead singer after a successful audition in 1990. During her time as frontwoman, the band enjoyed tremendous commercial success and rose to international fame. O’Riordan and her bandmates recorded 8 top-20 hits, including such perennially popular tunes as “Linger,” “Zombie,” and “Dreams.” The band split up in 2003 but reunited after a several-year hiatus, during which O’Riordan recorded two solo albums. O’Riordan’s frequently-changing style made her a ’90s style icon, and the Cranberries were often name-checked in the pop culture of the time, including a memorable mention in the comedy classic Clueless . In recent years, the singer made tabloid headlines several times as a result of her tumultuous personal life. In 2014, O’Riordan was arrested for assaulting a stewardess and a police officer aboard an Aer Lingus flight to New York. That same year, she split from her husband after 20 years of marriage. In 2017, the Cranberries released an acoustic album and embarked on an intercontinental tour that was cut short due to O’Riordan’s persistent back problems. While her band’s popularity peaked in the 1990s, O’Riordan remained an in-demand performer and a popular figure in Ireland until her death. She was invited to perform at the Vatican on several occasions, and in 2006, she was listed as one of the ten richest women in Ireland. Loving tributes from friends and fans made O’Riordan a top trending topic on Twitter within minutes of when news of her death went public. She is survived by two children. Our thoughts go out to O’Riordan’s family during this difficult time.

Steven Seagal Accused of Rape By Regina Simons

As more women courageously come forward and share their #MeToo stories, some once-beloved men have been unmasked as sex monsters. And then there’s Steven Seagal, whom no one has ever liked. Seagal’s been accused by Portia de Rossi and others of gross sexual harassment and misconduct. Now he is accused of rape. Recently, we have heard some deeply alarming stories about Steven Seagal . Lisa Guerrero spoke of her harrowing encounter with Seagal back in the ’90s. She describes having been invited to his house, but she insisted that the casting director accompany her. As uncomfortable as she felt while he appeared to wear only a robe while sitting, as if on a throne, in his living room, she can’t help but wonder how much worse the experience might have been had it only been the two of them. And then Portia de Rossi shared her horrible experience with him, also at his home, where a professional meeting went from bad to worse when Seagal allegedly “unzipped” in front of her. Dutch model Faviola Dadis revealed that she was lured under the guise of an audition to a hotel room, where Seagal allegedly began folding her breasts and crotch and where she describes his security team as having blocked her until she began making noise in an effort to get help. Horrifying. Among the several woman to accuse Steven Seagal of being a sex monster is 43-year-old model, Regina Simons. But she’s not talking about a narrow escape or being groped. She accuses Steven Seagal of rape . Regina worked as an extra on the 1994 film, On Deadly Ground . At the time, she was only 18 years old, and was a shy girl from a conservative Mormon background. The experience with Steven Seagal that she bravely describes to The Wrap is one that no one should ever have had to endure. She says that she was invited to the “wrap party” at Steven Seagal’s house, weeks after she filmed her scene. When she arrived, she was the only guest. “I asked him where is everyone and he said that they had already left.” And that, she describes, is when things went from weird to awful. “He took me into this room and then just closed the door and started kissing me.” Despicable. “He then took my clothes off and before I knew it he was on top of me, raping me…” That is as bad as it gets. “I wasn’t sexually active yet.” In case anyone is ignorant enough to ask why she didn’t try to fight off the man three times her size, she describes her experience in chilling detail. “People always talk about fight-or-flight. But no one talks about the freeze.” Freezing up is a normal preservation instinct! No sudden movements to flee or to fight can often reduce your chances of getting murdered. “The only way I’m able to describe it is I literally felt like I left my body.” That is classic dissociation. Do you ever just “go somewhere else” to avoid laughing or crying in socially inappropriate situations? Well, trauma survivors frequently dissociate during and then, later, after traumatic events. It’s a coping mechanism. “I think because of the situation I was completely caught off guard. Tears were coming down my face and I know that it hurt. He was three times my size.” “I was crying when he was on top of me.” It’s taken her a long time to come forward. “Even now, my 43-year-old mind knows how to process this and understand what a loving relationship is and what consensual sex is. And there was none of that.” She’s now a mother. Thinking back, though, she recalls making a beeline for the door as soon as she perceived that it was safe for her to go. “All I remember is him asking me if I needed any money.” Sickening. “I shook my head and ran towards my car. I cried the whole way home.” She’s reported this to the LAPD, and she’s not the only one. We won’t hold our breath for anyone to actually be held accountable, though.
