When Kim Kardashian tried to trademark the word “kimono,” she got called out. Her first instinct was to insist that “kimono” wasn’t cultural appropriation despite a massive outcry. Now, Kim has wisely changed her tune and shown real growth. But what’s her brand’s new name? Kim Kardashian spoke about the kimono kontroversy with WSJ Magazine in their first-ever all-digital issue. “You would think we would have obviously thought it through a little bit deeper,” Kim admits. She says: “I’m the first person to say, ‘Okay, of course, I can’t believe we didn’t think of this.’” Kim wants to clarify that “I obviously had really innocent intentions.” “But, let’s listen,” Kim adds. “And I want to really listen.” “And I want to really take it all in,” she expresses. She notes that Kanye “was in Japan when all of this was happening.” “It’s a place that we love and go to,” Kim reminds the world. “I have such respect.” “I am always listening, learning, and growing,” Kim affirms. Hey, so are the rest of us. And most of us aren’t hindered by the celbrity bubble. Kim wants to make it clear that “I so appreciate the passion and varied perspectives that people bring to me.” Last week, the most famous of the famous family revealed that she was walking back her brand’s intended name. “When I announced the name of my shapewear line,” Kim announced. “I did so with the best intentions in mind.” “My brands and products are built with inclusivity and diversity at their core,” she emphasized. “And after careful thought and consideration,” Kim revealed. “I will be launching my Solutionwear brand under a new name.” “I will be in touch soon,” she added. “Thank you for your understanding and support always.” Kim does not that there are other kimono trademarked brands that did not evoke this level of backlash. “There might be more eyes on me and my brand,” Kim humble-brags. “And so I have to tune it out and really learn and really grow,” she suggests. “And have to realize that maybe there is a different standard.” “Do I feel held to a higher standard?” Kim asks rhetorically. She then emphasizes: “I’ll take responsibility for that and do the right thing.” So what will this new brand be called? “We’re figuring it all out now,” Kim promises. She explains that she decided to get into shapewear and solutionwear because “everyone needs this.” “Underwear, bras,” Kim lists. “This is what people wear every day.” That’s true enough. This is not the first time that Kim has come under fire with accusations of cultural appropriation. Like a couple of her sisters, she does not understand why some communities of color resent seeing her wear cornrows. The reason, of course, is that in most states, people can lose their jobs or be denied employment for “unprofessional” hairstyles like that. Here’s a hint: “unprofessional” is by and large a euphemism for “black” when it refers to hairstyles. Seeing a mega-millionaire whose own immediate family is black flaunt hair that causes people of color to face discrimination is understandably upsetting. People aren’t out to spoil Kim’s fun, and not all criticisms that Kim faces are fair or true, but it’s good to hear that she is open to listening. 2018 was a crazy roller coaster ride for Ariana Grande. She hit some extremely low points after she and Pete Davidson began dating, got engaged and broke up all within the span of about six months. And then again when she had to deal with the tragic loss of her ex-boyfriend and beloved rapper Mac Miler who passed away after an accidental drug overdose . But they say you can’t appreciate the good days until you have had some bad ones, and Ari definitely faced numerous difficult days. And with her losses came major gains. In February of this year, Ariana was taking over the charts. Literally, it felt like she was releasing a new banger every other day. Thanks to her whirlwind romance with Pete Davidson, her latest album Thank U, Next was born. And thanks to music Ari was able to find a bit of peace following Miller’s death. In her new cover interview with Vogue , Grande opens up about the making of her album along with growing up and dealing with grief. The Sweetener songstress started by revealing that her friends had actually convinced her to move to New York City from Los Angeles for the summer of 2018. “My friends were like, ‘Come! We’re gonna have a fun summer,'” she recalled. “And then I met Pete, and it was an amazing distraction.” “It was frivolous and fun and insane and highly unrealistic,” she said. “And I loved him. And I didn’t know him.” Ari then went on to explain how she isn’t good at real life — we all get it, adulting is hard. “I’m like an infant when it comes to real life and this old soul, been-around-the-block-a-million-times artist,” she added. “I still don’t trust myself with the life stuff.” Grande ultimately released her hit breakup anthem “Thank U, Next” which graciously called out exes including Davidson, Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez and yes, Mac Miller. The song was released during the period in which it was made, which is one of the first times she had been single in a while. “I think that this is the first album and also the first year of my life where I’m realizing that I can no longer put off spending time with myself, just as me,” she explained. “I’ve been boo’d up my entire adult life.” “I’ve always had someone to say goodnight to. So “thank u, next” was this moment of self-realization,” she continued. “It was this scary moment of ‘Wow, you have to face all this stuff now. No more distraction. You have to heal all this s–t.'” Not only was Ariana putting out music because she had fresh inspo from her break up with Pete , but also because the studio was her safe haven. Miller passed away in September 2018 and Ari and Pete split the next month, with both of those dramatic events taking place back to back, the 26-year-old admits she barely even remembers making the album. “My friends know how much solace music brings me, so I think it was an all-around, let’s get her there type situation,” she said. “But if I’m completely honest, I don’t remember those months of my life because I was (a) so drunk and (b) so sad.” “I don’t really remember how it sarted or how it finished, or how all of a sudden there were 10 songs on the board,” she recalled. And while the Florida native is for the most part extremely open with her fans, she still prefers to keep that part of her life private. “I’m a person who’s been through a lot and doens’t know what to say about any of it to myself, let alone the world,” she admitted to the outlet. “I see myself onstage as this perfectly polished, great-at-my-job entertainer, and then in situations like this I’m just this little basket-case puddle of figuring it out.” “I have to be the luckiest girl in the world, and the unlickiest, for sure,” she said She went on to explain how she is currently working on celebrating the good, rather than always fearing for the worse . “I’m walking this fine line between healing myself and not letting the things I’ve gone through be picked at before I’m ready,” she said. “And also celebrating the beautiful things that have happened in my life and not feeling scared that they will be taken away from me because trauma tells me that they will be.” “you know what I mean?” she adds. But while she is currently on tour, we feel for her. “I was researching healing and PTSD and talking to therapists, and everyone was like, ‘You need a routine, a schedule,'” she said. “Of course because I’m an extremist, I’m like, OK, I’ll go on tour!” “But it’s hard to sing songs that are about wounds that are so fresh,” she admitted. “It’s fun, it’s pop music, and I’m not trying to make it sound like anything that it’s not but these songs to me really do represent some heavy s–t.” While Ari still has many shows left on her Sweetener world tour, we send all the love and well wishes her way. But, as difficult as it is for each one of us, we can only imagine how deeply his friends, family, and colleagues have been affected. Prior to their NYC screening of the season 3 premiere episode, the Snowfall cast talked to Bossip about what Singleton meant to each one of them and what it’s been like to carry on with his legacy. For those who don’t watch, Snowfall is Singleton’s creation… a way to tell the truth about how crack really became a widespread epidemic in the Black community. Damson Idris , who plays kingpin Franklin Saint on the hit FX series, tells Bossip Singleton’s presence is still very much felt on set. “We have a chair on set with John’s name on it, so he’s still with us,” he reveals. “For me personally, he was my big brother. He was like my sensei. He taught me so many codes. The best thing about John was that he empowered everyone around him. So even in his absence, which isn’t an absence, we’re able to stay confident, carry on his vision, keep his authenticity and make him proud. If he saw this whole season, he would’ve been proud. That’s what lets me sleep at night.” Angela Lewis adds that though they play a family on-screen, they’ve also become family off-screen and continue to face the loss of their mentor and friend together. “I think it would’ve been harder to not go on,” Lewis said. “He would have been disappointed. We lift each other up, we have each other’s backs, we are such a family. We cry together, we laugh together, we remember him together, we honor him together, and to not continue would have been awful.” Michael Hyatt plays Franklin Saint’s mom on the crime series and she shook the room when she chimed in. “We have all been injected with John’s guidance, his vision, his greatness,” Hyatt began. “And, what he left us with (as everybody is saying) is a rope that started with him and has just weaved through all of us. What we have developed is a oneness, I think. John started his dream to give voice to the voiceless, to tell the stories that were not being told in the truthful manner that they deserved to be told — and he has injected all of us with that. It is our duty, our responsibility to protect this show and protect John and to continue that task of protecting Cissy, Louie, Jerome, and Franklin and all of the stories that we’re telling… because we understand that we are telling the stories of our ancestors, our cousins, our sisters, our brothers, our mothers, and fathers. It’s not just a job, we are conduits of truth, telling the story to many people who don’t understand it. I was a kid at Howard, or even living in NY… I didn’t know what the f*ck those pipe things were on the floor. I didn’t know any of this sh*t — what consciousness did I have? I am learning a part of my community. If that’s my story, how many of US understand what was happening to us? How many of US believe the stories that we saw on the news… of these ‘wayward people who don’t have a future and they’re doing crack?’ These are the things that we were fed, but thankfully, with someone like John — who says ‘no, that is not what was happening. Let me tell you what was happening’ — now our children, we all have an understanding of what really the f*ck was going on. And, we will take this knowledge into the future, where there will be some other drama where we’re being manipulated. This will allow us to think: ‘Wait a second. What they’re feeding me on television, I don’t have to eat. Because I know there’s another truth.’ That’s what John has done.” Season 3 of Snowfall premieres tomorrow at 10 p.m. ET on FX. Tune in.
