Vince Gill Confronts Westboro Baptist Church Protesters Outside Concert

Country singer Vince Gill confronted the Westboro Baptist Church head-on as the group decided to protest his Missouri concert over the weekend. Vince Gill-Westboro Baptist Church Confrontation The controversial church apparently decided to protest Gill’s concert because he’s a divorced man who remarried, according to media reports. So on Sunday, Gill stepped out of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, Mo., to face down some WBC members on the sidewalk. The 56-year-old was once married to Sweethearts of the Rodeo singer Janis Oliver. After his 1998 divorce, he married Christian singer Amy Grant in 2000. Grant, who has offered support to her gay fan base, was also married before. Amy, 52, divorced Christian musician Gary Chapman in 1999. Apparently, their union doesn’t sit well with the WBC, best known for its anti-gay rhetoric, views on marriage and unwanted appearances … everywhere. “Vince Gill, what in the world are you doing out here?” a female WBC member can be heard asking, in a video of the confrontation uploaded to YouTube. “But, more importantly, what are you doing with another man’s wife?” Vince Gill Confronts Westboro Baptist Church Protesters “I came out to see what hatred really looked like in the face,” he said. “Don’t you know that divorce plus remarriage is adultery?” she asked. “Don’t you know that you f–kers are lucky that you don’t have a sign that says something about my wife?” Vince Gill responded , adding: “You know what else [Jesus Christ] said? He said a lot of stuff about forgiveness, about grace. You guys don’t seem to have any of that.” Gill then called another picketer a “big dips–t” and later asked if they are the Phelpses (the Phelps family leads the church) or just “the C Team.” Vince isn’t the only one to turn the tables on Westboro. Nonprofit group Planting Peace announced that in October it will be staging a drag show at the Equality House in Topeka, Kan., across the street. The Westboro Baptist Church compound is set to be in the center of the parade to raise money for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality.

Earl Scruggs, Bluegrass Legend, Passes Away at 88

Earl Scruggs, a prolific bluegrass artist who popularized the three-finger method of banjo-picking that came to be known as “Scruggs style,” has died. “Earl Scruggs, the most important banjo player who ever lived, has passed on,” Steve Martin tweeted after news broke that he’d passed. He was 88. The North Carolina native, who died of natural causes yesterday, released at least 29 live and studio albums over the years. And he also wrote this: Beverly Hillbillies Theme Song Scruggs wrote the music and sang “The Ballad of Jed Clampett,” aka The Beverly Hillbillies theme song, with Lester Flatt and singer Jerry Scoggins. He won his first Grammy in 1969 for the instrumental “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” and followed up with his second in 2002 for a re-recording of it. That version featured Martin on banjo, with Paul Shaffer, Leon Russell, Vince Gill, Albert Lee and Marty Stuart, on 2001’s Earl Scruggs and Friends . He received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2008.
