‘I didn’t imagine that it would be grungy, like, straight Navy soldier, no makeup,’ the pop star admits. By Fallon Prinzivalli Rihanna on the set of “Battleship” Photo: Splash News Rihanna is no stranger to the tough-cookie persona. With songs like “Rockstar” and “Rude Boy,” the femme fatale likes to play up her fiery side. And in this summer’s much-anticipated “Battleship,” she’s no different. While Rihanna showed us her softer side, laughing and smiling, during our MTV interview, it was her tougher side that she wanted to bring out in her debut big-screen performance. With only two female leads in the action flick, the pop singer landed the part of undercover FBI agent Raikes (the part of the sexy love interest Samantha went to the lovely Brooklyn Decker ). “I think that’s what I really wanted to do. I wanted to do something badass,” Rihanna said. As it turns out, the role was a lot more vigorous than she expected, but Rihanna was up for the challenge. “I didn’t imagine that it would be grungy, like, straight Navy soldier, no makeup,” she admitted. “[But] I enjoyed it. It was a brilliant surprise for me.” The “Talk That Talk” singer also revealed that the filmmakers used real weapons in the movie in lieu of fake, plastic props. The actors were taken out to train before shooting a scene in order to get acquainted with the artillery. Asked how comfortable she was handling a bazooka, the singer joked, “I have one of those at home.” “We would train up and down, just speeding the boat, turning and learning how to shoot and handle the weapon. Two hours later, we’re shooting that scene,” she explained. It’s clear Rihanna enjoyed the role, but what initially convinced her to turn from singer to actress? “A couple [of] things,” she said. “I met with Peter Berg , the director of the movie, and went through the entire film and he talked me through the story. He showed me some of the characters and some of the aliens and what they would look like. He was so enthusiastic and when someone is passionate about something that much, you trust them. “He certainly was very enthusiastic about me playing this part and I just felt like, ‘OK, well, if you’re sure, then I believe you. I think I can do it. And if you think I can do it, then let’s try,’ ” she recalled. “And it was as simple as trying and it being a role that wasn’t too big for me to pull off.” With “Battleship” set to hit theaters on May 18, Rihanna now has her eye on a starring role, telling the U.K. Press Association this week that she would give her “entire life” for the opportunity to play Whitney Houston. The pop icon died in February and rumors of a biopic have been floating on the Net ever since. Duo perform hit new single at half-time of NBA super contest. By Shawn Adler Rihanna and Kanye West perform during the NBA All-Star Game Photo: Getty Images Hometown hero Kobe Bryant may have blistered the Eastern Conference during the first half of Sunday night’s (February 20) NBA All-Star Game, but it took Rihanna , Drake, and Kanye West to bring the Los Angeles crowd to their feet, with a rollicking performance during half-time of the gala sporting event. Wearing a jet black ensemble and flanked on either side by string instrumentalists, RiRi opened the set with an orchestral arrangement of her hit “Umbrella,” before segueing into the faster tempo of “Only Girl” and “Rude Boy.” Rihanna was joined on stage for her fourth song when collaborator and rumored former paramour Drake jumped up from the audience to sing the duo’s hit “What’s My Name.” The rapper might have even scored the most points of the night by managing to work “Happy Birthday” into the song’s lyrics for Rihanna, who was celebrating turning 23-years-old.
Singer’s fifth disc, due out in November, will have a few ‘surprise’ collaborations. By Gil Kaufman Rihanna Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Rihanna already gave us her “Rockstar 101” best on last year’s Rated R , so this time she’s turning it up with a new CD whose title says it all. The singer revealed in a chat with fans over the weekend that her fifth studio effort will be called Loud . It’s due out on November 2 and is preceded by the single “Only Girl (In the World),” which premiered on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show early Tuesday (September 7). “I’m done recording the whole album,” Rihanna revealed during the chat, which took place on the official fansite Rihanna Daily . “I made sure not to let you down with my music! You guys are always defending me, so now you’ve got some great songs to justify it. I didn’t want to go backward and remake [2007’s] Good Girl Gone Bad . I wanted the next step in the evolution of Rihanna, and it’s perfect for us.” The singer said she’s never been this excited about any album she’s done, urging the members of her RihannaNavy to “get LOUD everybody, get crazy, get excited, cuz I’m pumped. I’m just gonna be ME, cuz that’s what u guys love the most, and that’s what makes me feel best. Just being normal, normal for me is LOUD! Sassy, fun, flirty, energetic.” While Rihanna said she’ll miss the Rated R era, she promised that one year after that dark, emotional effort, “nothing compares to the album I just made.” She also teased some “surprise” collaborations on the disc, though she didn’t reveal any names during the chat. “Girl” is produced by Stargate, who also collaborated with Rihanna on such early hits as “Don’t Stop the Music,” “Hate That I Love You” and the R banger “Rude Boy.” Related Artists Rihanna
