Talkback: Should Studio Heads Be as Candid as Universal’s Ron Meyer?

I was traveling all day as Movieline’s report from the Savannah Film Festival picked up steam around the blogosphere, but early on it was clear that two polar-opposite reactions were building in response to Universal Studios chief Ron Meyer’s comments about his studio’s well-publicized (at least, outside of the studio) recent flops. Either you love his blazing moment of candor — because we’ve all thought the same about most, if not all, of the woeful Universal films mentioned — or you despise what he stands for. But Meyer is a businessman, the President and COO of one of the largest movie studios and theme park conglomerates in the business. Should more filmmakers and studio heads follow suit?

9 Milestones in the Evolution of Eddie Murphy

In this weekend’s Tower Heist , Eddie Murphy stars as as a benevolent crook who helps a few Ponzi scheme victims attempt to recover their money. So how did a Brooklyn-area stand-up transform himself into an ’80s comedic superstar, an unexpected dramatic talent and this February, an Academy Award host?

Twilight Stars Drop Marriage Joke, Buñuel References at Breaking Dawn Junket

If Guinness World Records recognized fictional successive rites of passage, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 would be the clear victor. As weddings go, yes, there most definitely is one — possibly two, if you believe Robert Pattinson . Kristen Stewart ‘s Bella finally gets her way during the honeymoon . Then there’s the emotion-soaked pregnancy that puts Bella in peril once more, and all the dominoes that are set off for the pair and for Taylor Lautner ‘s Jacob as a result. Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner talked up the first installment of the Twilight finale Thursday ahead of its debut Nov. 18, with a surprise news conference appearance by series author Stephenie Meyer, who shared some tidbits from her stint as producer.

For Your Consideration in All Razzie Categories: Clint Eastwood

Razzie authority Dan Kois is on to something: “Clint Eastwood is due! The man is 81 and has directed some real howlers, from Any Which Way But Loose to Invictus . Count us among the Razzie experts who really thought last year was his year; Hereafter , after all, was a metaphysical hash of half-baked ideas and ridiculous plot points, wrapped in a stomach-churning tsunami re-creation. But Hereafter didn’t even get nominated! In fact — and I know this will be hard to believe — Clint has never been nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award, not even for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil . As one Razzie voter told me, “Even if J. Edgar is subpar — that is, less bad than usual — I plan to vote for Clint. The old man deserves it for all the crap he’s made me watch over the years.” [ Grantland ]

Safe House Trailer: Denzel Washington Tells Ryan Reynolds There is No Safe Word

It’s still too soon after Green Lantern for me to embrace Ryan Reynolds as a rugged protagonist. When we erase his comic sensibilities, we’re left with a geometric jawline, bleak opals for eyes (like expensive Frosty the Snowman), and an anxious self-seriousness that Van Wilder would’ve mocked. In the trailer for Safe House , he dons the hero face again playing a hunted man alongside Denzel Washington, who is killing it here. Trailer after the jump.
