Viola Davis Oscars Speech: The Best Ever?

Viola Davis was expected to win Best Supporting Actress at the 2017 Academy Awards for her role in Fences. And Viola Davis was expected to give an especially poignant speech after her win for Best Supporting Actress at the 2017 Academy Awards for her role in Fences. Both these things happened on Sunday night. But that didn't make them any less dramatic or impactful. “People ask me all the time, what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola?” said Davis early on in her acceptance speech, adding: “And I say, exhume those bodies, exhume those stories, the stories of the people who dreamed.” She went on, explaining her rationale and showering praise on her industry in general. “I became an artist, and thank god I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life. So here’s to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.” The How to Get Away with Murder star continued to gush over the playwright behind Fences, which she described as, “a movie that is about people, and words, and life, and forgiveness, and grace.” Now the only black woman to have won an Oscar, Emmy and Tony for acting, Davis referred to co-star and director Denzel Washington as her “captain” and told the actor: “Thank you for putting two entities in the driving seat: August and God. And they served you well.” Twitter quickly blew up after the speech was over with jokes over how the speech itself ought to be nominated for an Oscar or Emmy. Watch the entire thing below:

The 2003 Academy Awards: A Prophetic Shitshow

Consuming pop culture of the past can be a jarring reminder that we once lived in a world where our current present would have seemed like the most ludicrous and horrifying possibility floating in a sea of infinitely more likely futures. Olivia Wilde Gives Birth to Baby Girl!

Hope you’re ready for a great big mess of cuteness, because it’s about to hit you like a freight train. A really tiny, incredibly adorable freight train. Olivia Wilde has given birth to her second child with Jason Sudeikis, a darling little baby girl they named Daisy Josephine. She was even kind enough to share a photo. Brace yourself: Olivia captioned the photo “There goes the neighborhood. Daisy Josephine Sudeikis. Born, like a boss, on #internationaldayofthegirl.” International Day of the Girl, by the way, was on October 11th, so little Daisy is only four days old. Can you even stand how sweet this all is? Olivia, if you’ll remember, announced that she and Jason were expecting a baby girl in a really moving way just last month. She tweeted an ad of Hillary Clinton’s that showed young girls looking at themselves in the mirror alongside clips of Donald Trump making cruel, body-shaming remarks about women. The ad asked “Is this the president we want for our daughters?” And for Olivia, the answer was a very emphatic “no.” “As someone who is about to have a daughter,” she wrote, “this hits me deep in my core.” She added the very popular, very relevant “Never Trump” hashtag, and really we just could not love her more. Little Daisy joins two-year-old Otis Alexander in what has to be one of the most precious families in Hollywood. Olivia’s said that Otis was very eager to welcome his little sister, explaining in an interview earlier this yea r that “He loves little babies.” “He has a Michael Jordan doll that he carries around sometimes. He uses the doll as either a hammer or a baby.” Let’s all congratulate Olivia on her seriously gorgeous, extremely enviable family. And Olivia, if you’re looking to adopt any older children — an adult gossip blogger, to be specific — just say the word. View Slideshow: Celebrity Baby Photos: So Adorable!

Chris Rock: How Did He Offend Asians?

Chris Rock has mostly received positive reviews for his performance as host of the 2016 Academy Awards . Those in the black community especially feel as if Rock struck the right kind of tone in dealing with the issue of race after no African-American actors or actresses were nominated this year. But that doesn’t mean all minorities were pleased with Rock’s antics. At one point in the broadcast, Rock introduced three Asian children as PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants. “They sent us their most dedicated, accurate and hard-working representatives,” he said. “I want you to please welcome Ming Zhu, Bao Ling and David Moskowitz.” Aware there could be some backlash to this quip, he added: “If anybody’s upset about that joke, just tweet about it on your phone that was probably also made by these kids.” And that’s exactly what above average basketball player Jeremy Lin did. “Seriously though, when is this going to change?!? Tired of it being “cool” and “ok” to bash Asians smh #Oscars,” the Charlotte Hornets point guard wrote on Sunday night. He then explained himself as follows to reporters the next day: “I thought it was a chance for me to stand up for Asians. “I just feel like sometimes the way people perceive Asians or Asian Americans today can be disappointing in the way they view them. “Even Asian American masculinity or whatever you want to talk about, just a lot of the ways that Asians are perceived I don’t always agree with.” View Slideshow: Chris Rock Oscars Monologue: The Best Jokes! Karin Wang, Vice President of Programs & Communications at Asian Americans Advancing Justice, also took issue with Rock’s joke and was proud that critics voiced their opinion on social media. She referred to the segment as “tasteless.” And this is what Asian-American dating blogger Rainer Maningdin wrote on Facebook in response to the gag: “Three little Asian kids went up on stage in front of thousands of Hollywood millionaires and were laughed at — not with — because of their race.” What do you think of Rock bringing these kids up on stage? Are people being too sensitive? O was the comedian being too in sensitive? View Slideshow: Oscars 2016: The Most Memorable Moments
