In an interview with The New York Times , Melissa McCarthy finally addresses New York Observer critic Red Reed, who blasted her as a ” tractor-sized hippo ” when reviewing Identity Thief in February. Was she affected by the insult? At first, McCarthy said, yes. She was taken aback. But “I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate,” the actress said . “I just thought, that’s someone who’s in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs.” McCarthy, meanwhile, is at the center of another weight-based controversy: Posters for The Heat appear to have photoshopped her into a different, far thinner individual. Admitting such slights may have “crushed” her when she was 20, McCarthy is now the mother of two girls and understands she’s raising them in “a strange epidemic of body image and body dysmorphia.” Reviews such as Reed’s “just add to all those younger girls, that are not in a place in their life where they can say, ‘That doesn’t reflect on me.'” “That makes it more true,” concluded McCarthy, married to actor Ben Falcone since 2005. “It means you don’t actually look good enough.” In conclusion: continue to mock McCarthy, idiots. She will laugh all the way to the award-winning bank, with a loving husband and children by her side.
