Source: Johnny Louis/WENN.com / WENN Comedian Gary Owen Gets Slammed For Making N-Word Joke Gary Owen got REAL comfortable with his perceived Black card and the Twitter-verse is now coming for his head. In what seemed to be a response to Damian Lillard ‘s mind-melting jumper during the Portland Trail Blazers vs Oklahoma City Thunder game, Owen tweeted out: “If Portland’s coach could say the N word that was the perfect time. This N word just hit that shit. WOW” If Portland’s coach could say the N word that was the perfect time. This N word just hit that shit. WOW — Gary Owen (@garyowencomedy) April 24, 2019 The Black delegation was not amused. Folks immediately slammed Owen’s suggestion that the Trail Blazer’s head coach, Terry Stotts — a White man — should at any time use the N-Word. Gary Owen is what happens when y'all invite people you don't know to the cookout — Not Only a Thug, A Poet (@SoloChills) April 24, 2019 Here's the next play: Gary Owen will get his Black friends to take up for him & tell us he didn't mean anything by it and mention he has a Black wife as a means to justify some racist shit. — Alain (@Alain_Patron) April 24, 2019 Hit the flip for more appalled reaction to the Caucasity-prone “comedian.”
Source: Mario Tama / Getty Nice try! Ancestry.com Apologizes For A Love Ad Involving A White Man And Black Slave Smh. Ancestry.com tried to sugar coat, cherry-on-top slavery, and it didn’t go well at all with the people. According to The Atlanta Journal Constitution , the genealogy database tried to promote their services with a commercial set in 1800s America. In the clip, a White man is depicted asking a Black woman named Abigail to “escape to the north” with him. “Will you leave with me?” the man asks, with a ring in his hand. Then, the ad ends with an on-screen “marriage certificate,” suggesting that the man and woman got married in Canada in 1857. ooooh my god LMAOOO who approved this ancestry commercial??? pic.twitter.com/Isy0k4HTMA — manny (@mannyfidel) April 18, 2019 The clip made rounds on social media this week and automatically, folks became outraged over the clip’s romanticization of slavery. A PhD candidate at Harvard, Clint Smith, tweeted: “ancestry dot com: how can we overly romanticize & create an irresponsible, ahistorical depiction of the relationship between white men & black women during the period of chattel slavery that completely disregards its power dynamics & the trauma of sexual exploitation?” nobody: ancestry dot com: how can we overly romanticize & create an irresponsible, ahistorical depiction of the relationship between white men & black women during the period of chattel slavery that completely disregards its power dynamics & the trauma of sexual exploitation? https://t.co/s5BqnoSg9x — Clint Smith (@ClintSmithIII) April 18, 2019 Activist and organizer Brittany Packnett also tweeted: “I used this service a few years ago. And when I realized I was more than 10% European, I wept. Not from shame for who I am, but from anger from the trauma of how it may have come to be. This commercial spits on the trauma in our veins and the fight of our ancestors, @ ancestry “ I used this service a few years ago. And when I realized I was more than 10% European, I wept. Not from shame for who I am, but from anger from the trauma of how it may have come to be. This commercial spits on the trauma in our veins and the fight of our ancestors, @ancestry https://t.co/KBpqB6XPZg — Brittany Packnett (@MsPackyetti) April 18, 2019 Other historians, reporters, and academics also hopped on social media to call out the company’s “reprehensible” commercial. The site eventually made a public apology on Thursday as backlash peaked: “Ancestry is committed to telling important stories from history,” spokeswoman Gina Spatafore said in a statement. “This ad was intended to represent one of those stories. We very much appreciate the feedback we have received and apologize for any offense that the ad may have caused.” The original video, which was first posted on YouTube has since been removed. The history of Black women facing sexual violence from White men during slavery isn’t some baseless tale either. It’s supported by DNA evidence, according to The New York Times . In a study they covered in 2016, a group of geneticists found in the DNA of 3,726 living African-Americans “marks of slavery’s cruelties, including further evidence that white slave owners routinely fathered children with women held as slaves.” When they examined proportions of European DNA in the population, the scientists also realized that X chromosomes, which are inherited in higher percentages from women, had greater African ancestry than other chromosomes, suggesting that slaveowners were “raping the women they held captive.” So yeah, you can squash the interracial love stories with slaves Ancestry.com. Hit the flip for more commentary on the company’s misstep.
Source: KMazur / Getty Uh oh, they done did it now. Fans of The Notebook are vexed with Netflix UK after the online streaming service changed the ending of the classic romance-drama. Starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, viewers followed the story of a poor young man and rich girl as they fell in love but eventually got separated due to differences in social standing. In the original version, Gosling and McAdams’ characters, Noah and Allie die in bed together—but when it became available for streaming on Netflix UK, the final scenes were noticeably different . In Netflix UK’s version, Noah and Allie are very much alive while lying down in bed…and then the film cuts to a scene of birds flying over a lake. Heartbroken Twitter felt all kinds of ways—most fans seemed annoyed, while others defended the ending, saying it was much more similar to the actual ending in Nicholas Spark’s novel. Hit the flip to see what folks had to say, but first Netflix has since responded to all the backlash, saying that 1). They didn’t edit the film; 2). The alternate version already existed and was given to them; 3). They are getting to the bottom of it and hilariously, 4). “Apparently some films have more than one ending?!” Ha. Things you should know… – we did not edit the notebook – an alternate version exists and was supplied to us – we are getting to the bottom of it asap – apparently some films have more than one ending?! — Netflix UK & Ireland (@NetflixUK) February 27, 2019
Source: Icon Sportswire / Getty Somehow foolishness continues to seep into Black History Month, but this time it’s by our own — now removed. Los Angeles Chargers player Jahleel Addae was proudly filmed by his white fiancée Lindsey Nelson toasting to “light skin kids” among a group of swirl friends. Might I add, there wasn’t a sista in sight. The video above was initially posted to Nelson’s Instagram story with the caption reading “Cheers to more light skin kids” in case their ovation wasn’t audible enough. Addae, who is Ghanian-American, is currently being dragged by Twitter and subsequently left the chat, as his Instagram account is now private. Now, for those who want to go on a love-whoever-you-want tangent, please note, the issue isn’t that he’s engaged to a white woman, it’s the underlying reasons indicated by his praise for a potential “light skin baby” (because being mixed doesn’t automatically equal a fair complexion) showcasing an inherent hate toward his own dark skin. Then there’s also those truth-telling Tweets unearthed on Twitter. But everything was considered a joke #NFL #chargers #JahleelAddae #SportsCenter obviously from these previous tweets he has a problem pic.twitter.com/S0BbKMIvw2 — Belida Hernandez (@colombianwynter) February 11, 2019 One user questioned how his female family members feel about his comment? #JahleelAddae family photo. #addae #African #Ghana pic.twitter.com/3Gon2M3brW — Hero Serena (@SwampSipper) February 11, 2019 Others questioned the validity of his engagement? Nah negro, man up and face the backlash from the black community. #sellout — Maria Alex-Grady (@mariaangelo2014) February 13, 2019 #JahleelAddae at least @Do_OrAddae37 hasn’t deleted his Twitter like he deleted his heritage. — Phil Jones (@InfamousLilPhil) February 10, 2019 I just need @Do_OrAddae37 to be just as BOLD in facing the backlash as he was in laughing and posting the video! #JahleelAddae — Ida (@IdaBuddafly) February 10, 2019 And another user thought to remind Addae just how beautiful dark skin babies are too Can we get a darkskin baby thread so #JahleelAddae and his wife can see what beauty is? pic.twitter.com/65P467SVgY — I write.. Source: SUHAIL SALEH / Getty Rania Youssef had no idea that when she rocked a risqué, black lacy dress over a tight black bodice on Thursday to the Cairo International Film Festival, that it would lead to her facing jail time. Two lawyers filed a lawsuit against the Egyptian actress accusing her of “inciting debauchery”, which could land her in jail for up to five years. According to the AFP, The first lawsuit alleging obscenity was filed by lawyer Amro Abdelsalam and the second by Samir Sabri, another lawyer known for taking celebrities to court. Sabri told AFP that Youssef’s appearance “did not meet societal values, traditions and morals and therefore undermined the reputation of the festival and the reputation of Egyptian women in particular”. Youssef responded to the backlash in a statement, saying, “I probably miscalculated when I chose to wear this dress. It was the first time that I wore it and I did not realise it would spark so much anger. I reaffirm my commitment to the values upon which we were raised in Egyptian society.” Rania’s trial is set to begin on January 12.
