The Cumber-baby has officially arrived! Benedict Cumberbatch and wife Sophie Hunter welcomed their first child today. Reps for the actor shared the news in a statement issued to People magazine this morning: “Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are delighted to announce the arrival of their beautiful son,” the statement read. “We would kindly ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during these next few precious weeks.” Cumberbatch and Hunter got engaged in November of last year, and rumors that she was carrying the British heartthrob’s baby began to circulate shortly thereafter. Hunted confirmed that she was pregnant in January, and Benedict and Sophie got married a month later on Valentine’s Day. The couple has yet to reveal any details about the baby, but sources say we can expect the announcement of a name and the release of the first photos sometime in the next week. Naturally, Cumberbatch’s legions of devoted female fans have already expressed their best wishes (and volunteered to babysit) on social media. Benedict Cumberbatch is both very sorry and very embarrassed. Last week, the Oscar-nominated star was discussing the state of African-American actors in Great Britain with Tavis Smiley when he remarked: “As far as colored actors go, it gets really difficult in the U.K..” referring to the success of those such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and David Oyelowo in 12 Years a Slave and Selma, respectively. While Cumberbatch may have had his heart in the right place, he was subsequently criticized for using such an outdated term, prompting an apology from the man behind Sherlock. “I’m devastated to have caused offense by using this outmoded terminology,” he said. “I make no excuse for my being an idiot and know the damage is done. I can only hope this incident will highlight the need for correct usage of terminology that is accurate and inoffensive.” The Imitation Game star concluded: “The most shaming aspect of this for me is that I was talking about racial inequality in the performing arts in the U.K. and the need for rapid improvements in our industry when I used the term.” What do you think, fans? It’s official: After months of speculation and a suspiciously out-of-the-blue engagement, the New York Post has confirmed that Sophie Hunter is pregnant with Benedict Cumberbatch’s baby. The rumors began when Cumberbatch and Hunter got engaged back in November. The actor’s obsessive fans scrutinize his every move, yet no one was aware that he was in a serious relationship. So when Bendy announced his intention to marry Hunter, it was widely assumed the couple had good reason to hurry things along. Hunter was spotted hiding a baby bump just a few weeks later at the Palm Springs Film Festival, and as expected, the Hunterbatch pregnancy was confirmed just a few days later. “Sophie is a few months along, and both she and Benedict are very excited about it,” a source tells the Post. “They are also quietly planning to marry in early spring.” In addition to playing the title role in the BBC’s Sherlock, Cumberbatch is currently an Oscar contender thanks to his acclaimed work in The Imitation Game.
