‘X Factor’: Melanie Amaro Stands Out As Five Go Home

First live episode whittles pool down to 12 finalists. By Adam Graham Melanie Amaro performs on ‘X Factor’ Photo: FOX Five contestants were shown the door on Tuesday’s “X Factor,” the first live episode of the singing competition. Among those sent away during the two-and-a-half-hour episode was Dexter Haygood, the formerly homeless contestant who once lived on L.A.’s Skid Row. Haygood — described early on as the “funky phenomenon” by his mentor Nicole Scherzinger — said he was “kinda confused” by the dismissal, which followed his bizarro-world mash-up of Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” and Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl,” though he then said he didn’t know why he was confused. “Right now I’m in the boggle zone, which is the 21st century twilight zone,” Haygood explained. Also sent packing during the episode were 20-year-old Tiah Tolliver, a favorite of Simon Cowell’s who was never liked by the other judges; 22-year-old Simone Battle, who plugged her upcoming music video even as she was being given the boot; crooner Phillip Lomax, the 22-year-old who was saddled with singing the outside-of-his-comfort-zone “I’m a Believer” on the episode by his mentor L.A. Reid; and brother duo the Brewer Boys, who apologized to their mentor Paula Abdul (older brother Justin referred to her as “Ms. Paula”) for letting her down in their performance. That left 12 finalists who will go on in the competition:

Nicole Scherzinger Solo Album Delayed Again

Killer Love now reportedly slated for December 6 release. By Gil Kaufman Nicole Scherzinger Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage After waiting more than five years for the domestic release of former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger ‘s debut solo effort, surely her fans can hold on for a few more weeks? The long-delayed Killer Love, which dropped in an alternate version in England in March, was slated to finally wash up on American shores on November 15. But according to the Hollywood Reporter, the disc has once again been delayed, pushed back a few weeks until December 6. No reason was given for the latest delay and the singer’s label, Interscope Records, would only say that the new release date would be “early December.” The U.S. version of the Scherzinger disc is slated to feature production by a slew of heavy hitters, including Lady Gaga collaborator RedOne, Jim Jonsin, The-Dream, Harvey Mason Jr. and Tricky Stewart. Sting (“Power’s Out”) and Snoop Dogg (“Peep Show”) are among the reported guests. 50 Cent lends some verses to the first single, “Right There.” A spokesperson for Interscope could not be reached for comment at press time about the release-date change. Scherzinger began work on her solo debut in 2005, only to shelve that album and start over again on the new effort several years later. In the meantime, Scherzinger is busy with her other full-time gig as a judge on Simon Cowell’s “X Factor.” On Thursday night’s baseball-delayed mentors’ home-visit episode , Scherzinger hooked up with Enrique Iglesias to judge the talents of her assigned group of mentees: the over 30s. So far, Scherzinger, who was tapped as the fourth judge after original fourth judge Cheryl Cole was let go early in production, has served as a type of younger doppelg

‘X-Factor’ Judges Home Visit Episode Bumped Due To Baseball

Rain delay in ALCS game forces schedule change for Wednesday’s and Thursday’s shows. By Gil Kaufman L.A. Reid, Nicole Scherzinger, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell on “The X Factor” Photo: FOX Simon Cowell’s “X Factor” has survived more modest ratings than the brash British judge promised for his reality singing show. And given his tenacity and the amount of money piled up to promote the American version of his hit British competition show — not to mention the $5 million prize — it seems like it would take an act of God to knock the “Factor” train off the track. Well, that’s exactly what happened on Wednesday night when the show’s final 32 were slated to visit the judges’ homes and commune with such special mentors as Rihanna . The American League Championship Series game between the Detroit Tigers and the Texas Rangers was originally slated to begin at 4:19 p.m., but the pounding rain didn’t let up until after 5:30. By the time the grounds crew began prepping the field, the game had been delayed by two hours and 13 minutes. That already put the 8 p.m. start time for “Factor” into jeopardy. But add in the fact that the game went into extra innings after ending in a 3-3 tie after nine and you had a serious scheduling headache for Fox. By the fifth inning, it was announced that “Factor” would not air on Wednesday night, but would return to its regular slot on Thursday (October 13). The current plan calls for last night’s episode to air on Thursday and Thursday’s show to air on Sunday. That’s all fine and good (assuming this afternoon’s game is not delayed by rain as well), but if a game seven is forced between the two teams, “Factor” may have to shuffle again, meaning Fox might have to air three episodes of the show in the same week to keep things on track. As if all of this shuffling wasn’t confusing enough (and way frustrating for “Factor” fanatics ), the third round of the judges’ home visits will air on Tuesday, which is another switch from the Wednesday-Thursday schedule . To refresh your memory, after the grueling “X Factor” boot camp shows , L.A. Reid is mentoring the boys (Brennin Hunt, Brian Bradley, Chris Rene , etc.), Simon Cowell has the girls (Rachel Crow, Tiah Tolliver, Drew Ryniewicz, etc.), Nicole Scherzinger will deal with the over-30s (Dexter Haygood, Josh Krajcik, LeRoy Bell, etc.) and Paula Abdul is corralling the groups ( 2squar’d , the Brewer Boys, the Stereo Hogzz). After visiting the judge’s homes (or a neutral location of their choice), the 16 semifinalists will vie for a spot in the upcoming live shows.
