For Discussion: Do Couples Have A Better Chance Of Surviving Marriage If They Live Together First?

Practice usually improves performance. This seems to be true for sports, music, and dance, but what about marriage? The most significant change in family living over the past 50 years has been the rise in the number of couples who are living together prior to getting married. In the 1970s only about 10% of couples reported living together without being married. By the late 1990s, about half of women ages 15-44 reported that they had lived with a partner without being married. This has prompted scientists to ask the question, does practice living together improve marital relationships and reduce the risk of divorce? The answer seems to be “no.” Scott Stanley at the University of Denver and his colleagues studied people who were in their first or second marriages to find out how cohabitation influenced marital quality and the likelihood of divorce. For first marriages, people who cohabitate prior to marriage results in less positive interactions and more conflict when compared to people who do not cohabitate. However, people who cohabitate after becoming engaged look more similar to those who never cohabitate. In short, both those who never cohabitate and those who cohabitate only after becoming engaged have more positive marital relationships and are less divorce prone than those who cohabitate prior to becoming engaged. Stanley suggests that cohabitators who are not engaged drift into marriage without the same level of commitment as the other types of couples. The researchers also found that in addition to having lower quality marital relationships, couples who cohabitated prior to engagement were also more likely to divorce when compared with the other two groups. So what about second marriages, does this same effect appear? Among second marriages, cohabitation prior to marriage appears to result in lower marital quality regardless of whether the couple had become engaged or not. The researchers suggest that “engagement” has a different meaning for those contemplating second marriages and that sometimes the engagement period is a long period of time that reflects a reluctance to marry rather than a step toward marriage. Thus, some engaged cohabitating couples considering second marriages might be using “cohabitation” as an alternative to making a commitment to get married. We don’t know if cohabitation prior to a second marriage is related to divorce. Scientists haven’t looked at this issue. Commonsense would seem to suggest that cohabitation ought to provide a proving ground for marriage–a chance to work out the rhythms of getting along. This report by Stanley and his colleagues adds to a body of knowledge that has been accumulating for over a decade of research that seems to suggest otherwise. Successful marital relationships seem to be more than figuring out who takes out the trash and even how to resolve conflicts over who takes out the trash. Although learning to resolve differences is very important, marriage also includes an important dimension of “commitment” to the relationship that motivates couples to work on finding better ways to get along and find happiness. Little Diggy Simmons Wants You To Know It Ain’t A Game

Uh oh! Look who’s smelling and feeling himself a little too much! Check out the conversation Little Diggy recently had with MTV.com about his career. Diggy Simmons wants to make one thing clear: Hip-hop is not just a hobby for the “Run’s House” star. “This is what I do,” he told MTV News. “I get in interviews: ‘Is this a hobby?’ I almost feel like stopping the interview, you know what I’m saying? I don’t get why they think just ’cause I did the show I can’t do this. [TV] wasn’t my profession. It was something that we were approached with and we did. The reality show, for me, obviously, wasn’t anything that I really wanted to do with my career. So I don’t get why people are like, ‘Oh, now he’s doing this?’ It’s not ‘now’; this is the beginning of me going toward something I really want to do.” Hmm. And here we were thinking “Run’s House” was about his dad… The teen MC — another one of our 11 for ’11 stars to watch — got his buzz started last year when he put out a viral video of him paying homage to his famous father, Rev Run of Run-DMC fame, when Diggy rocked over Nas’ “Made You Look.” Now, the 15-year-old is working on his debut album for Atlantic Records, home to heavyweights like T.I., B.o.B and Hottest Breakthrough winner Wiz Khalifa. Diggy is hoping to turn the tables on his reputation as a reality-TV talent to bona fide hip-hop heavyweight. “Me just writing and the expression of different things that I go through,” Diggy said, describing his forthcoming collection. “People are like, ‘Man, what is he even gonna write about?’ But if you listen to the mixtape or listen to the tracks, there’s a lot of different topics and things that I touch on. And a lot of people are like, ‘Oh, I can relate to this at any age.’ It’s like a breath of fresh air. So I’m really thankful for all the support that I been receiving over the past year or couple months.” Yeah, see? Now we’re not sure we like you all that much, little Diggy. Tone it down some.

Diggy Simmons ‘Made You Look’ Freestyle Grabs Kanye West’s Attention

West posted Rev Run’s son’s video on his blog: ‘I knew this kid was [going] to be fresh.’ By Steven Roberts People may be familiar with Diggy Simmons as Reverend Run’s second-oldest son on the show “Run’s House.” But Diggy has been steadily building a name for himself as an MC — and somewhat of a young fashionista — thanks in large part to his blog and his mixtape, First Flight. And anyone who was still unfamiliar with Diggy took notice when he released a video of himself freestyling over Nas’ “Made You Look” throughout the streets of New York. “It was really something that I picked up and did on my own,” Simmons explained. “I was just writing for a while and doing my thing. It started off, I was just doing joints off my Macbook on GarageBand.” “I released my first track this summer and got a cool buzz around it. I released some tracks prior to the mixtape, and then that’s when I started pushing the tape and everything. And then once I pushed it out, a lot of people were aware that I was rapping. Now, since the ‘Made You Look’ freestyle and a lot of people knowing that I signed to Atlantic, many people know [about me].” Diggy said that freestyling over a beat from one of the greatest MCs of all time was intimidating, so he knew he had to do it justice. It took him almost a month of writing to tackle the record, until one day it finally came to him. “One day I just got in the studio and blasted it, and I just went off on it. I told at least three people before I was going to do it. They were like, ‘Yo, you got to do that beat justice. That’s a Nas beat.’ I thought doing a nice viral video, that would’ve helped it too.” He hooked up with Phil Da God, a young director from Atlanta whom he met on Twitter. Phil reached out to Diggy’s manager, and when it came time to shoot the video, Phil happened to be in New York. The video begins with Diggy bopping his head around 42nd Street with cars passing by, and then it transports you to other locations around the city like the Meatpacking District and the Brooklyn Bridge. So far the video has received nearly 200,000 views and positive reception. Kanye West even posted the video on his blog, saying, “I KNEW THIS KID WAS [GOING] TO BE FRESH. I KNEW IT!” Diggy said he was honored by the compliment from West. “Man, it feels good. He’s definitely one of the best. He’s like one of the craziest wordsmiths. His verses are amazing and I look up to him in hip-hop, so that co-sign, definitely once they said it in perspective, it was like, ‘Wow.’ ” Related Artists Kanye West Nas
