On Friday, Young Mr. Simmons celebrated the premiere of his “Two Up” video with MTV’s RapFix blog, and the teenage MC was so excited that he sat with MTV News and broke down each scene in the Clifton Bell-directed clip. The vid begins with Diggy standing alone, playing air piano in time with the track’s opening keys. The action may seem insignificant, but it’s actually a key component to the song. “That was what really drew me to the track when I first heard the beat,” he said. “It was just those piano keys that I love.” As the beat begins to take shape, so does the video, and a bouncer begins to let Diggy’s specially invited guests into the party. Of course the crowd is compromised mostly of females. “There were so many girls at the shoot that we were like, ‘We have to get some dudes in the mix,’ ” Diggy said, laughing at the non-dilemma. “They were like New York, young kids, you know how they get,” the MC said of the video’s extras. “It was good energy and we didn’t even have to tell them to get hyped at no point in the video. I was feeding off of their energy when I was in front of them during those shots. It was just easy.” It wasn’t just the crowd that excited Diggy: The fashion-forward MC was also hyped at his on-camera wardrobe, though some of his favorite items didn’t even make the cut. In one scene Simmons sports a turquoise jacket with two mini-Jesus pieces around his neck. On his feet he wears a special pair of black and gold Air Jordan #6s that were released back in 2006 and now go for as much as $850 online. “I’m kinda mad that you didn’t get that in the shot,” Diggy said of his coveted footwear. Another key scene, in which a silhouetted Diggs dances across the screen, was actually inspired by another rap great. For the “Two Up” video, Simmons borrowed from Kanye West’s 2007 clip for “Homecoming.” “That whole silhouette idea is something that we drew inspiration from but made it a little different with the color, because that video is black and white,” he explained. “I like how it came out overall for real. ‘Our Mindless movement is all about being confident, just being yourself,’ Battle of the Boy Bands hopefuls tell MTV News. By Kelly Marino Mindless Behavior Photo: Getty Images The first round of MTV News’ Battle of the Boy Bands has officially ended, but there is still time for fans to cast their votes for their favorite heartthrob group in hopes to title them the ultimate boy band of all time. Another group urging their biggest followers to vote for them are the guys from Mindless Behavior . But before you get mindless with your votes, here are some facts about the foursome that might help steer your mind in the right direction: Highest Chart Achievement Their single “Mrs. Right” featuring rapper Diggy Simmons reached #8 on the U.S. Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts after its 2011 release. Defining Tune The guys confess they would travel the world just to find the right kind of girl in the beat-popping hit “Mrs. Right,” causing female hearts in every country to flutter. Standout Video During their pledge to search high and low for “Mrs. Right,” the boys get a lesson or two in geography from their teacher, Professor LL Cool J. Directed by Brett Ratner, the video also features Mike Epps as the school janitor, who joins in on the fun during a pep rally to cheer on Diggy Simmons and the group’s signature dance moves. Debut Album Their debut album, #1 Girl, hit the U.S. in September 2011, debuting at #7 on the Billboard 200 with 36,000 copies sold in its first week. Biggest Competition Despite all of their success, the boys weren’t afraid to admit who they thought might be their biggest competition amid the new wave of boy bands that has exploded on the scene. “As far as other boy bands who I feel [are] our biggest competition is One Direction and the Wanted,” Roc Royal told us. “That’s a huge competition for us, because we all have different movements, and they come from the U.K., and they also have fans out here, which, they have a lot of fans out here, so it’s crazy.” So why do the guys think they should win our Battle of the Boys Band? Well, it’s simple, really: “There’s a lot of boy bands in the poll, but we’re definitely unique,” Princeton stated. “So please vote for us.” Ray Ray chimed in: “I think we should win the title for Best Boy Band of All Time because we have a great movement. Our Mindless movement is all about being confident, just being yourself, not caring what other people think, stopping all the bullying and, one, we’re really great artists. We have songs that anyone can listen to. That’s why I think we should win.” “And we love all of the fans,” Princeton added. When it comes to learning the key to becoming a great boy band, the group even filled us in on a little secret the Backstreet Boys once told them while on tour together: “When we were on tour with the Backstreet Boys, the advice that they gave us was ‘Stick together no matter what,’ ” Ray Ray shared. “They said: You might have arguments here and there, but just stick together. You have to become family although you’re in a group. You have to literally become family, and you got to stick together.” Voting in round two of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Teenage rapper unveils his major-label debut, filled with feel-good tracks that prove he can hold his own against more seasoned MCs. By Rob Markman Diggy Simmons Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Diggy Simmons took one step closer to his Unexpected Arrival when the teenage rapper unveiled his album for press, the music industry and their daughters, nieces and little sisters Tuesday night at Tribeca Cinemas in New York City. Team Diggy served up his signature Jetsetters non-alcoholic drink to the teenage crowd who gathered to take the first listen to the rap rookie’s major-label debut, which is due out March 20. Last week, at the rehearsal for BET’s upcoming “Rip the Runway” fashion and music show, MTV News caught up with Diggy to talk about his anticipated debut. “It’s just going to show the world,” he told us at the February 28 shoot. “People have gotten different pieces of me doing my thing from the freestyles to the mixtapes and different things, but this is a full project of original music and it’s just me taking that to the next level of what people really aren’t expecting. The title really speaks for itself.” Unexpected Arrival begins with a spoken-word intro and leads into the rock-tinged “Hello World.” It’s a chest-pounding proclamation befitting of the son of rap legend Run, but young Simmons is without a doubt his own artist. Diggy proves he can spit with the best of them. On “88,” he manages to hold his own against LOX luminary Jadakiss. He pulls similar lyrical stunts on songs like “Tom Edison” and “The Reign” while still catering to the teenage girls squealing at the front row of his shows. The LP’s first single, “Do It Like You” featuring Jeremih, is already a proven winner, currently at #13 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart and still rising. On “4 Letter Word,” Diggy explores L-O-V-E with a youthful, wide-eyed optimism, and on “Special Occasion,” he celebrates like a young man should. It isn’t all perfect though. “Unforgivable Blackness” is an honest attempt at depth, but the socio-politically charged track seemed to stick out like a sore thumb on an album filled with feel-good music.
