Nabbing top-10 spot on Billboard chart, winner’s first single lands second-largest digital-sales week ever for an ‘Idol’ contestant. By John Mitchell Phillip Phillips on “American Idol” Photo: Michael Becker/ FOX Despite ongoing health concerns , things just keep getting better on the professional front for “American Idol” season 11 winner Phillip Phillips . The singer’s debut single, “Home,” is making a splash on the Billboard charts, ringing up a series of history-making debuts for the FOX singing competition. With 278,000 digital downloads, “Home” is the highest-debuting song on this week’s Digital Songs chart, bowing at an impressive #2 behind Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.” That number is also large enough to give Phillips the second-best digital-sales week ever for an “Idol” contestant. Only the original “American Idol,” Kelly Clarkson, can boast a bigger digital sales week: Her smash “My Life Would Suck Without You” debuted with 280,000 downloads in January 2009. Propelled by such strong sales, Phillips enters the Billboard Hot 100 at #10, making him the first “Idol” in four years to see his victory single reach the top 10. The last was David Cook, whose 2008 “Idol” single “The Time of My Life” entered the chart at #3. The rock-solid debut of “Home” also gives Phillips the biggest sales week of any coronation song since 2003, the year SoundScan began tracking digital-download sales. Billboard notes that two other “Idols” — season two victor Ruben Studdard and runner-up Clay Aiken — have actually enjoyed larger opening frames than Phillips, though their numbers came outside the digital format. Aiken’s 2003 season-finale single “This is the Night” moved 393,000 units as a CD single in its debut frame, while Studdard’s “Flying Without Wings” shifted 286,000 discs. 45-year-old’s body was pulled from the Mississippi River in New Orleans on Wednesday. By Aly Semigran Michael Showers Photo: HBO Actor Michael Showers, perhaps best known for his work as Captain John Guidry on the HBO series “Treme,” was found dead in the Mississippi River early Wednesday morning. He was 45 years old. According to local New Orleans paper the Times-Picayune , authorities said a steamboat captain spotted a body floating in the water near the French Quarter around 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday. The body was recovered from the river at 11:45 a.m. and has been identified as Showers. John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish coroner’s office, told the paper that Showers, who reportedly lived in the nearby Chalmette area, appeared to have been in the water for two days. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. In addition to his role on the Emmy-nominated “Treme,” Showers had turns on other television series including “Breaking Bad” and “The Vampire Diaries.” He appeared on the big screen as well, with roles in “Traffic,” “I Love You Philip Morris” and this year in Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life.” Share your thoughts on and condolences for actor Michael Showers in the comments section below.

If ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ tops Hot 100, Perry’s Teenage Dream will tie MJ’s mark of five #1s from a single album. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: John Parra/ WireImage Katy Perry’s unstoppable Teenage Dream album continues to churn out hits … and now, it might just make history too. If Dream ‘s fifth single, the just-released “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” , continues its climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (it currently sits at #4, jumping 27 spots from last week), Perry will not only become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off one album, she’ll be the first artist of any gender to accomplish the feat since Michael Jackson had five chart-topping singles off his Bad album in 1987 and 1988. Perry’s previous #1s from the Dream album are, of course, “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “E.T.” Jackson’s five #1s from the Bad album are “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror” and “Dirty Diana.” Perry has already shattered the Hot 100 record for most consecutive weeks with a single inside the Top 10 (48, a number previously held by Swedish popmeisters Ace of Base), then kept that momentum going by spending an entire year in the chart’s upper echelon. More incredibly, that streak is still active, as two of Perry’s singles — “T.G.I.F.” and “E.T.” — sit at numbers 4 and 5, respectively. What’s more, “T.G.I.F” currently sits atop the Billboard Digital Songs chart, and may soon be her sixth single to pass the 4 million mark in digital sales, joining “E.T.,” “California Gurls,” “Firework,” and from her One of the Boys album, “Hot N Cold” and “I Kissed a Girl.” No other artist has even had four songs pass the 4 million download mark … Perry’s closest competitors in that regard are Lady Gaga and Rihanna, both of whom have had three 4 million-sellers. What do you think of Katy Perry’s chart streak? Sound off in the comments! Related Videos Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’: Frame By Frame Related Artists Katy Perry Michael Jackson
