If you already didn’t know, a Goodie Mob reunion has long been in full effect. Member Cee Lo Green celebrated his birthday at Vanquish in Atlanta on Thursday (May 30) night and the Dungeon Family and other celebrities wer in the house…. Continue
‘Our coming together after a 12-year hiatus is somewhat of a testament to our elasticity,’ Cee Lo Green tells MTV News of the Goodie Mob reunion. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Felicia Morris Cee Lo Green Photo: Goodie Mob defined hip-hop’s dirty south sound before such a descriptor even existed, mixing uplifting raps with bass-heavy funk. Cee Lo Green , Big Gipp, T-Mo and Khujo, along with their Dungeon Family affiliates OutKast, were largely responsible for making Atlanta rap’s southern capital. The last time the Mob dropped an album as a quartet was 1999’s World Party, but now they are back. “The Goodie Mob, we definitely are reunited. And we’ve been working on that album really vigorously and it’s coming out very well,” Cee Lo Green told MTV News while at a Los Angeles taping for TV Land’s new sitcom “Soul Man.” “I think people are going to be very pleased. You know our core audience and also this new audience that we are aspiring to acquire.” The comeback LP, which is titled Age Against the Machine, doesn’t have a release date, but in April the group gave fans their first taste of the album when they performed their new single “Fight To Win” on “The Voice.” The televised performance showed a Goodie Mob quite different from what their day-one fans may remember. While singing the motivational ode, Khujo, Gipp and T-Mo donned gold battle armor and matching capes, resembling a squad of triumphant Roman soldiers. The song has been catching on, it was chosen as the official theme for the 2012 NBA Playoffs and ran on television spots throughout the two-month sporting tournament. It’s been over a decade since we’ve seen Goodie together, but Cee Lo says it was bound to happen. “Well, you know, it was just a matter of time, it’s very faithful and we’re a family,” he explained. “And you know we were never separate from each other completely. So our coming together after a 12-year hiatus is somewhat of a testament to our elasticity if you will. That’s what I call it.” Are you looking forward to the Goodie Mob comeback album? ‘They know how to let artists be artists,’ Busta tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Matt Elias Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News Busta Rhymes most certainly respects the Cash Money conglomerate. Some scratched their heads when the Dungeon Dragon announced last month that he had signed with Cash Money Records . Critics couldn’t fathom why the East Coast rap vet would ink with Birdman’s Southern-based, youth-driven label, but for Busta, the deal makes perfect sense. “It’s real fortunate to be able to have a 20-year career run and partner up with the most powerful record company in the business 20 years later,” Busta told MTV News on Tuesday from the set of his Hype Williams-directed “Why Stop Now” video. Bussa Bus began his career in 1991 as a member of the four-man Long Island, New York, group Leaders of the New School but went solo after the crew disbanded in 1993. The gravel-voiced speed rapper has since dropped eight solo albums and given hip-hop a number of memorable party anthems. Not only were “Woo-Hah! Got You All in Check,” “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” and “Pass the Courvoisier Pt. 2” huge radio hits, each song also had high-priced, creative music videos attached to them. Combining his hitmaking ability and strong visuals has made Busta one of rap’s greatest and most unique artists. The veteran continued to dominate this past year thanks to his scene-stealing verse on Chris Brown’s Grammy-nominated smash “Look at Me Now” and his guest spot on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV. At this point in his career, he was looking for a home that would continue to fuel his fire. “They understand. They know how to nurture the music, they know how to let artists be artists, they know how to let you reach your fullest capability creatively,” Busta said of Cash Money. Back in 1997, Lil Wayne was an oft-overlooked kid rapper, but he has steadily grown into a bankable soloist and the mega musical star he is now. Busta factored in Weezy’s trajectory when deciding on where he should sign. “Wayne is a perfect example. He reached his apex a little while ago, and he just continues to grow,” Busta said. It isn’t just Tunechi, though. While officially signed to Young Money, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Lil Twist and Tyga all fall under the Cash Money umbrella. With a stable of successful artists, why wouldn’t Busta want to join the YMCMB team? “It feels good to see that,” he said of the label’s success. “It feels good to be a part of that.” What do you think of Busta joining Cash Money? ‘I’m a trendsetter. The Future is now,’ rapper tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Smith Future Photo: MTV News The future is unpredictable, but Nayvadius “Future” Cash is taking all bets. The Atlanta spitter broke out in late 2010, appearing on YC’s club hit “Racks” and segueing into rap’s collective conscious with his own party starter “Watch This.” Known for his repetitive and catchy hooks, plus his melodic bars, Future has earned himself a spot on MTV Jams’ 2011 Fab 5 roster. Conceived in 2005 on MTV Jams, the Fab 5 is a collection of the year’s most outstanding new hip-hop artists who have made a visual impact on the road to releasing their debut albums. Fab 5 alumni include Juelz Santana, Tony Yayo, Paul Wall, Young Jeezy, Kid Cudi, Drake and 2011’s first inductee, Big Sean . This year, MTV Jams, MTV News and Sucker Free will bring you 2011’s hottest new hip-hop upstarts, and they get no hotter than Future! “Future is a painter, very creative, very original. I’m a trendsetter. The Future is now,” the rapper said. Growing up in Atlanta’s Zone 6 section, Future had to look no further than his own family for musical inspiration. As the younger cousin of Organized Noize (Outkast, Goodie Mob) producer Rico Wade, Future soaked up tons of game. “I got the nickname Future from the Dungeon Family,” he said of the collective that is made up of Outkast, Goodie Mob, Organized Noize and others. “My dog G-Rock used to always tell me, ‘You’re the future, you’re the future. You’re young, man. Keep dreamin’ and settin’ new goals and achieving new goals and just reach to the top and stay at the top.’ ” Though he hasn’t quite reached the heights that he plans to, the 25-year-old is well on his way. The Astronaut Kid, as he calls himself, established his sound on a pair of mixtapes he dubbed 1000 and Dirty Sprite. Since then he has been on a tear. Future is now heralded as Atlanta’s biggest young street artist and his latest tape, True Story, reflects his popularity. According to the rapper, all of his material is based on real events that have happened in his life. “Right now we represent music with substance, music that has meaning behind it. It’s just motivational music, everyday life stories and just put it all together on the track,” Future said. “I make music from my soul, so it comes across to my fans the same way. So when it touches them, it touches their soul and it comes across right.” So far it has! Check back here every Monday for the next three weeks to find out who will join Big Sean and Future in the Fab 5. And tune in to “RapFix Live,” where each artist will be highlighted.
