James Holmes Pleads Not Guilty; Judge Enters Plea on Behalf of Aurora Suspect

A Colorado judge entered a plea of not guilty on behalf of James Holmes, whose attorney said he was not ready to enter one in the Aurora shooting case. The judge thus entered a not guilty plea for him and said he could change the plea to not guilty by reason of insanity, the Associated Press reports. James Holmes , who faces 166 counts of murder, manslaughter and other crimes for the July 2012 massacre, sat silent, but alert, at the hearing. He alternately appeared to look at the judge and stare into space . Jailed for eight months now, the 25-year-old was reportedly restrained in a psychiatric ward for several days last fall out of fear he might harm himself. To be found not guilty by reason of insanity, Holmes has to prove he did not know right from wrong when he committed the crime of which he is accused. Prosecutors say Holmes planned the massacre well in advance, ordering arms and ammunition through the internet and dressing in paramilitary gear. To make matters even worse, police also found explosives in his apartment that had reportedly been rigged to go off when authorities entered. Holmes had no connection to his victims, and unlike Newtown shooter Adam Lanza , or Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, did not commit suicide. He has been compared to Jared Loughner , who opened fire outside a Tucson supermarket in 2011, killing 6 and wounding 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Loughner, a diagnosed schizophrenic, was initially ruled not competent to stand trial, but after more than a year of treatment inside a federal prison, pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to life without parole. The D.A. will make an announcement on April 1 about whether he intends to seek the death penalty for Holmes, whose defense asked for more time to prepare.

Miley Cyrus vs. Taylor Swift: Shots Fired?

Did Miley Cyrus just call Taylor Swift a slut? Earlier this week, a Twitter user with the handle “kenbakernow” posted the following message, matching up Miley with Taylor and asking fans to consider the reputation of each superstar: It is true that some of the Miley Cyrus fashion choices have led to a certain label, and it hasn’t really helped that she recently took to the stage with strippers . Swift, meanwhile, receives a few jabs for her very long dating resume, but is mostly considered America’s Singing Sweetheart. How does Miley feel about the comparison? “@kenbakernow haha,” she responded. “this made laugh. thanks for making me smile I needed it love u.” Of course Cyrus would appreciate a follower standing up for her, but didn’t she sort of throw Swift under the promiscuous bus in the process? What do you think THGers? Does Miley receive unfair criticism, while Swift should be taken more to task for her never-ending line of boyfriends?

Morgan Freeman Blames "Sensationalist Media" for Connecticut Shooting, Coverage of National Tragedies

Adam Lanza . The name of the assailant who gunned down 20 children and six adults inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut last week has been all over the news. And that’s a serious problem, according to Morgan Freeman. With the possibility of new gun control laws up for debate, the Oscar winner has released a statement in which he points the blame for these types of tragedies directly at CNN, Fox News and other media outlets. Why did the Connecticut shooting take place? “It’s because of the way the media reports it,” Freeman says. “Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. “Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. “Why a grade school? Why children? Because he’ll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.” Backing up this theory, it’s believed that Lanza previewed his massacre online two days before it took place, teasing the murder/suicide on a forum like some sort of twisted movie. Continues Morgan: “CNN’s article says that if the body count “holds up”, this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer’s face on all their reports for hours. “Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer’s identity? None that I’ve seen yet. Because they don’t sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you’ve just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next. “You can help by forgetting you ever read this man’s name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news.” What do you think of this take? Is the media to blame for the shooting?   Yes, they glorify the killer! Yes, they play at least some role No, some people are beyond reason No, it’s all about gun control View Poll »
