Tupac Hologram Company Prepping Virtual Elvis

Digital Domain Media Group is working on a ‘virtual’ Elvis for a series of film and TV projects. By Gil Kaufman Elvis Presley Photo: Getty Images We may not be getting those Left Eye, Michael Jackson or Notorious B.I.G. holograms
we were hoping for anytime soon, but one of rock’s royal court will be digitally resurrected. Digital Domain Media Group, the company behind the earthshaking Tupac Shakur hologram
that created a global sensation at this year’s Coachella festival announced this week that it is planning to create a virtual Elvis Presley. Working with the Core Media Group — which owns the rights to Elvis’ estate — Digital Domain said it is working on a series of “virtual” Elvis likenesses for a wide range of entertainment projects that could include everything from film and TV to “multi-platform productions throughout the world.” DDMG, the Oscar-winning folks behind the special effects in films such as “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” has already started on some of the Elvis virtual renderings and plans to announce plans for a full roll-out soon. “Elvis Presley is the king of rock and roll … you have to start with the king,” Ed Ulbrich, Chief Creative Officer at Digital Domain told MTV News when asked why the company’s next major project would focus on the first wave rock star. “We’re in the creative development stages now. Instead of a single application we’re looking to bring Elvis back across a host of platforms, including live concerts in venues.” Like the Tupac stunt, Ulbrich said the Elvis rendering would not be based on archival footage, but original, exclusive performances by the King using the company’s bleeding-edge technology. He was not at liberty to describe how that process is managed, but Ulbrich promised that like in “Button” and “TRON: Legacy,” it would involve the holy grail of the industry: creating a synthetic likeness of a human being that is just as believable as the real thing. The company is in the process of building the Elvis programming now and Ulbrich said there was no timetable on when we might see the first fruits of this new experiment because the Digital Domain team is determined to take as long as necessary to get it right. “We take this very seriously because we want to pay great respect to Elvis and his legacy,” he said. In a statement announcing the deal, Elvis Presley Enterprises President and CEO, Jack Soden said, “This is a new and exciting way to bring the magic and music of Elvis Presley to life. His lifelong fans will be thrilled all over again and new audiences will discover the electric experience of Elvis the performer.” While Ulbrich said he was not at liberty to discuss what other music legends may get the Tupac/Elvis treatment next, he acknowledged that is not to say that, “we’re not talking about other things or looking at other things.” For the time being, though, the focus is on Elvis. Now, as whether we’ll see young, hip-swiveling Elvis or the latter-period Las Vegas version, Ulbrich would only say, “you’ll have to [wait and] see.” Related Artists Elvis Presley Tupac

WATCH: Here’s An Epic Movie Supercut of Lionel Ritchie’s ‘Hello’

Ah, supercuts. Sometimes done well, too often not, the art of the pop culture-mashing video meme rarely achieves such simple brilliance as it does in this version of Lionel Richie’s “Hello,” as pieced together from scraps of movie dialogue here and there. It’s like an alternate reality fever dream in which John Cusack’s Being John Malkovich puppeteer, Elvis, Neytiri, Tippi Hedren, Gandhi, and Borat (to name a few of the folks immortalized herein) come together to record a cover of the soul-searching 1984 slow-jam. Seriously — if all supercuts were this good, we’d never get anything done as a people. Hello, it is this you’re looking for! (groan) Hello from ant1mat3rie on Vimeo . “Hello” is credited to Matthijs Vlot , who also uploaded the inspired, breath-taking “ooh ahh” a few months ago. ooh aah from ant1mat3rie on Vimeo . Cory Monteith Debunks Javier Bardem on Glee

Listen up, Gleeks. Cory Monteith wants to clear up a few casting rumors (that Movieline helped sort yesterday ) regarding the Fox show’s sophomore season. Just last night, the star tweeted that “Javier Bardem, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Elvis, Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise and you are not appearing in season 2.” While Monteith is probably right about Elvis, perhaps the Glee cast member didn’t receive the memo about Bardem, who insists that he will be playing a Spanish heavy metal rock star who befriends Artie. Brooke White, Justin Gaston Smolder In ‘Idol’ Duet

The duo sang Elvis ballad ‘If I Can Dream’ on Wednesday night’s results show. By Gil Kaufman Brooke White and Justin Gaston perform on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images They may not have been bathed in smoky green lasers like Adam Lambert , but former “American Idol” finalist Brooke White and underwear model/ Miley Cyrus ex Justin Gaston had some simmering chemistry on their side on Wednesday night, when they performed a duet on the elimination show that served as the finale for Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens . Gaston, 21, a former contestant on “Nashville Star” and current participant in the Web series “If I Can Dream,” brought his smoldering good looks to the performance of the Elvis Presley ballad also called “If I Can Dream.” The performance began with White, season seven’s fifth-place finisher, seated at a grand piano trading lines with Gaston, who gently strummed an acoustic guitar, his signature shoulder-length hair falling out of his ponytail just so. White soon hopped up and gazed at Gaston as they sang the lines, “If I can dream of a warmer sun/ Where hope keeps shining on everyone,” while the accompanying string section revved up and images of puffy clouds filled the screen behind them. Both wearing slim black suits, the pair spent much of the performance alternating between staring into each other’s eyes and belting out the inspirational tune while facing the studio audience, ending the song with their faces just inches away from each other. In the awkward chit-chat afterwards — during which host Ryan Seacrest reminded Gaston that White is married — the pair revealed that they’d first meet only a week and a half ago and had put the performance together very quickly. The gospel-inspired tune was recorded by Presley in 1968, just two months after the assassination of the civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and it makes use of some of King’s quotes in a plea for peace and understanding. It also served as the rousing finale of Elvis’ famous 1968 comeback special on NBC, “Elvis,” in which the singer performed an “Unplugged”-style show in front of a small studio audience as he attempted to jump start his career after years of cheesy movies and questionable records. It was Elvis’ first live performance in seven years, and the song was added to the special at the last minute by musical director W. Earl Brown, who also penned the number. The song has a history on “Idol”: Season-five runner-up Elliot Yamin sang it during Elvis week, and Celine Dion did it as a virtual duet with Elvis the following season. Though Gaston’s musical career has not yet taken off, it’s possible he’s honing his chops these days by jamming with another former “Idol” contestant, Alex Lambert . The beloved, painfully shy singer, who was unexpectedly booted before reaching the top 12, moved into the “If I Can Dream” house shortly after his ouster and has vowed to keep pursuing his musical dreams.
