TEDxTalks: “Black Girl Magic” In The Fashion Industry By CK Model Ebonee Davis [Video]

Ebonee Davis is on the rise for being just who she is. In this TED Talk from the University of Nevada, Ebonee explains the psychological warfare waged against black children dealing with the “good hair” prejudice in the black community. TED : After Alton Sterling was murdered by police last summer, Ebonee Davis wrote a letter to the fashion industry highlighting the duty fashion media has to help change the perception of black people. In her impassioned talk, she further explores this idea as she recalls her experiences as a black model in the industry. She emphasizes that the fashion industry does not only reflect and beauty standards, its a reflection of the current state of our democracy. As creators of media, the industry must work to reinstate the humanity of the systematically dehumanized and create a society where everyone can take pride in who they are and where they come from. After being discovered at the age of 18, Ebonee Davis left Seattle for New York City to pursue her modeling dream. Throughout her fast-track career, she’s graced the pages of some of the most coveted publications in fashion, from Teen Vogue to Sports Illustrated. Davis was one of six finalists in the Sports Illustrated Model Search and she appeared in two of Calvin Klein’s new campaigns.

LeAnn Rimes: It’s Not Easy Being a Homewrecker!

Just when we were really beginning to believe that Leann Rimes and Brandi Glanville were ready to make peace, Mrs. Rimes-Cibrian goes out of her way to throw seven kinds of shade across multiple media platforms. First there were the competing butt selfies , which felt like something from a remake of Single White Female where the villain is just as obsessed with herself as she is with the hero. Now, after a few weeks of keeping relatively quiet (by her standards) LeAnn has an album to promote, which means she’s back to drumming up drama by telling her sob story and letting the world know how hard it is to be LeAnn. In a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune , LeAnn was asked about life as a stepmom and her mildly controversial decision to sing about her stepkids in her new songs. LeAnn whiffed at the softball question and babbled on about how much she likes to “rile people up.” “I think I’m realizing I’ve always been able to move people, just getting people to talk. I’m talking about a subject that doesn’t get written about,” she said. “I know society these days, I know people are wanting to find everything they can to pick things apart, but I have to write from my heart and my experiences, and I fully own them. Those are mine to share.” The theme of the piece (chosen by LeAnn’s PR team, no doubt) was that LeAnn is no longer a “magnet for scandals,” so naturally she decided to talk about her affair with Eddie Cibrian … aka the most scandalous part of her “career.” “I’m not the only one who’s ever been through that situation,” Rimes said, as though she’s some sort of war hero. “I don’t know if a lot of people in that situation have the guts to even talk about it. I don’t know if I would’ve had the guts to fully embrace all of that if I hadn’t gone through it as publicly as I did. “Sometimes you’ve gotta say, ‘Screw it.’ You’ve gotta own it.” We were almost with her, until she started giving herself props for “owning” her extramarital affair. In any event, it sounds like a really personal album – ya know, despite the fact that LeAnn stole the title track from another artist and has yet to acknowledge it. We’re sure on her next record she’ll have a song about how hard it is to be a plagiarist.

Brian Williams: Suspended By NBC For Six Months

NBC has announced that Nightly News anchor Brian Williams will be suspended for six months without pay. Williams has been accused of lying about events that took place while he was covering the Iraq War in 2003.  After he stated on his January 31 broadcast that he was riding in a helicopter that was shot down by an RPG, Williams was forced to admit that he had lied after several witnesses came forward with claims that Williams had, in fact, been miles away when the event that he described took place. Since then, Williams’ credibility has come under attack, and several media outlets have reported other instances in which Williams may have been less than honest with his viewers. Last week, the New York Post claimed that Williams lied his experiences in Hurricane Katrina . Today, the same newspaper reported that Williams lied about another war story , as he allegedly embellished the details of an incident that he experienced in Israel in 2007. Williams announced a leave of absence from the network on February 8, and there was widespread speculation about whether or not NBC would take disciplinary action against the beloved newsman. Williams reportedly had a meeting with network heads this afternoon where he was informed of their decision.
