In White Folks News: Miley “Teenage Skank” Cyrus Gets 5th Tattoo

SMH: Miley Cyrus has added another tattoo to her collection. The 18-year-old singer-actress now has a dream catcher inked on her torso, a friend close to Cyrus tells PEOPLE. “It’s a picture of the dream catcher that hangs over her bed with four feathers to represent her four brothers and sisters,” says the friend. (Miley’s siblings are Brandi, 23, Trace, 21, Braison, 16, and Noah, 11.) “The dream catcher is to protect them.” That brings Cyrus’s current tattoo tally up to five. She also has a heart and a small cross on her fingers, the word ‘love” on her ear and the phrase “just breathe” on her rib cage in honor of a close friend who died of cystic fibrosis. “All of Miley’s tattoos have a deep meaning to her,” says the friend. “They all represent family and friends close to her.” Source

Less Than 1% of Oil-Soaked Birds Survive

Photo via Boston “Kill, don’t clean” oiled birds No, that’s not the opinion of the most heartless oil spill expert ever, or BP CEO Tony Hayward letting fly another tactless gaffe . It’s the actual recommendation of one oil spill expert and animal biologist who says that once birds are thoroughly oiled, the best course of action is to put them out of their misery. Even if all the crude is scrubbed from their feathers, she says, oiled bir… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Meet Blackie The Mutant Penguin

This rare all-black mutant penguin was spotted and photographed by Andrew Evans, who is traveling in Antarctica. What gave this suave little guy his goth look? No, the answer is not Photoshop. National Geographic's Janelle Nanos asked Allan Baker, an ornithologist, about the images. Here's what transpired: “Well that is astonishing,” he said. “I've never ever seen that before. It's a one in a zillion kind of mutation somewhere. The animal has lost control of its pigmentation patterns. Presumably it's some kind of mutation.” He explained that typically, melanistic birds of all species will have white spots where melanin pigmentation has failed to color the feathers. But it's extremely rare for melanin deposits to occur where they're not normally located, as genes control those pathways (in this case, in the breast feathers of the king penguin). After looking through several texts, he ruled out the potential for it to be a hybrid and said that it's closer in coloring to the Little Blue penguin. “But look at the size of those legs,” he added, “It's an absolute monster.” Honestly I don't know what's more awesome: Blackie the Penguin, or Baker's response to it. http://io9.com/5485282/meet-blackie-the-mutant-penguin added by: pjacobs51
