‘X-Men: First Class’: Everything We Know So Far

Superhero film has been a revolving door of writers, directors and actors. By Eric Ditzian “X-Men: First Class” Photo: Marvel “X-Men: First Class” is gathering a hefty ensemble of mutants and villains. There have been so many casting rumors and announcements that it’s gotten hard to keep track of everything, and director Matthew Vaughn even had to reassure us that the flick wouldn’t get too crowded with characters. “In terms of having a lot of mutants, it doesn’t feel that busy,” he said. “I don’t feel worried about it. I think it will be really cool to see all these guys doing their stuff.” Vaughn has already handled an ensemble of superheroes and villains in “Kick-Ass,” so we trust him on this one. Still, there’s a lot to remember. The latest casting developments arrived Tuesday, when word broke that a slew of actors had signed on to “First Class,” including January Jones (“Mad Men”) in the role of telepathic mutant Emma Frost. As the cast continues to grow, we’ve gathered everything there is to know so far about “X-Men: First Class.” November 19, 2008 : 20th Century Fox taps “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Schwartz to pen the “First Class” script . February 10, 2009 : Despite speculation that Schwartz would also hop into the director’s chair, he tells MTV News he won’t be helming the flick . April 15, 2009 : Producer Lauren Shuler Donner reveals that among the characters to be featured in “First Class” will be young versions of Cyclops, Beast and Jean Grey . August 21, 2009 : Bryan Singer, who directed two previous “X-Men” films, is said to be “flirting” with the idea of directing “First Class.” December 17, 2009 : Singer signs on to direct . December 18, 2009 : Schwartz’s “First Class” draft gets tossed , and Fox hires Jamie Moss (“Ghost in the Shell”) to pen a script based on Singer’s treatment. The studio is said to be moving “aggressively” with development. March 21, 2010 : News breaks that Singer is ditching directing duties , though he’ll remain on the project as a producer. May 5, 2010 : “Kick-Ass” director Matthew Vaughn signs on to direct. Fox announces the film will hit theaters on June 3, 2011 . May 28, 2010 : James McAvoy agrees to play young Professor Charles Xavier. The story will reportedly follow the early days of the partnership between Professor X and Magneto as they train the first generation of mutants before a violent rift developed between them. June 18, 2010 : Michael Fassbender enters talks to play Magneto, and Benjamin Walker joins up as Hank “Beast” McCoy. June 28, 2010 : Rumor has it that Alice Eve is in negotiations to play Emma Frost. July 8, 2010 : Nicholas Hoult replaces Walker in the Beast role, and Caleb Landry Jones lands the part of Banshee. Beast was previously played by Kelsey Grammer in 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand.” July 15, 2010 : Kevin Bacon finalizes his deal to play the central villain. Jennifer Lawrence is booked for the role of Mystique (previously played by Rebecca Romijn). July 28, 2010 : “Twilight” star Edi Gathegi will play Darwin. August 16, 2010 : Jason Flemyng is in talks to play Azazel, the demonic mutant father of Kurt “Nightcrawler” Wagner. Oliver Platt will play the Man in Black , a non-mutant character. Lindsay Lohan: The Pre-Prison Maxim Cover

The incarceration of Lindsay Lohan caused media mania last month. First there was her Complex spread , thrown together in the wake of her sentencing for probation violations. Now Lohan has landed the cover of Maxim . Somewhat surprisingly, the trashy men’s magazine doesn’t feature Lindsay Lohan nude except for her court-ordered ankle monitor, as we half expected. She does wear a jail-appropriate black and white striped bikini, however. Hey, it’s no orange jumpsuit cut off at the waist, but it will have to do … Lindsay Lohan apparently looked – and felt – good a week before doing time. “I am feeling strong,” she said of her imminent jail sentence for violating her probation. “I’ve experienced a lot in my life,” she added. What a warrior. “My mom has given me a lot of faith. This too shall pass.” The wreck, now being treated for drug addiction and mental issues at UCLA Medical Center following her release from jail, shared her post-rehab plans: “To focus on myself and my work and to move all press on me to focus on the work I do. Also, I’d like to do more work in India and travel to Malawi.” As for Lindsay’s advice to the fans she has left? “Stay true to yourself always. At the end of the day, you have to look at yourself in the mirror and be content with the choices you’ve made, and will make, in your life. Go with your gut!” Can she go with her gut and keep it clean?

The Other Guys Movie Premiere: Red Carpet Photos

With the clear exception of Inception , it’s been the summer of comedies. Few dramas have made a dent in the box office, while more light-hearted films such as Toy Story 3 , Despicable Me and Dinner with Schmucks have fared very well. That trend will likely continue this weekend, as The Other Guys hits theaters nationwide. It features Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell as mismatched police partners – which is really all you need to know, isn’t it? The cast came out last night for the movie’s Hollywood premiere, as Wahlberg and Ferrell pose below with co-star Eva Mendes. Yes, she’s also in the flick, making it humorous and also very, very attractive…

‘Toy Story 3’: The Reviews Are In!

Pixar’s third adventure, now in 3-D, is ‘a near-perfect piece of popular entertainment,’ one critic writes of Woody, Buzz and the gang. By Eric Ditzian Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear and Buzz Lightyear in “Toy Story 3” Photo: Disney/Pixar Pixar has done pretty well for itself over the last 15 years. The studio has yet to release a film that failed to hit the $360 million mark. “Finding Nemo,” the company’s top box-office earner, ended its theatrical run with $868 million in ticket sales. Pixar’s most recent offering, “Up,” didn’t fair too badly either, soaring to a $723 million gross last year. Given such financial triumphs, the anticipated box-office performance of “Toy Story 3,” which arrived on Friday (June 18), is nothing short of staggering. Early tracking and pre-sales suggest the third adventure of Woody and his pals will enjoy Pixar’s biggest opening ever, raking in as much as $100 million over the weekend. Thanks, premium 3-D ticket prices! Yet B.O. bucks aside, the question remains: Is the flick any good? Is this third installment of the franchise — which finds Woody, Buzz and the gang are stranded at a wacky day care center, where they struggle to find Andy, their longtime owner, before he heads off to college — worth your hard-earned cash? The answer, according to critics, is a resounding, “Yes!” ” ‘Toy Story 3’ is as sweet, as touching, as humane a movie as you are likely to see this summer, and yet it is all about doodads stamped and molded out of plastic and polyester,” wrote A.O. Scott of The New York Times. “Therein lies its genius, and its uncanny authenticity. A tale that captured the romance and pathos of the consumer economy, the sorrows and pleasures that dwell at the heart of our materialist way of life, could only be told from the standpoint of the commodities themselves, those accretions of synthetic substance and alienated labor we somehow endow with souls.” That’s some high praise, and Scott is not alone. Some reviewers are even convinced that “Toy Story 3” is Pixar’s finest recent effort, better even than “Up,” which nabbed a Best Picture Oscar nomination. ” ‘Toy Story 3’ is a better film than ‘Wall-E’ and ‘Up’ in that it succeeds completely in conventional terms,” the San Francisco Chronicle ‘s Mick LaSalle said. “For 103 minutes, it never takes audience interest for granted. It has action, horror and vivid characters, and it always keeps moving forward.” Speaking of those vivid characters, the film introduces us to some memorable new toys. “The movie has delirious fun with Big Baby, a damaged infant doll who’s a rubbery, droopy-eyed zombie,” wrote Entertainment Weekly ‘s Owen Gleiberman. “And then there’s Ken — yes, the Ken (voiced by Michael Keaton, having a ball), who’s a different sort of zombie, a polyester-brained dandy who lives in a dollhouse and wishes that it were still hip to be square. Like every other toy in the film, he comes with his own hilariously specific mental universe.” And what of the flick’s CGI animation and 3-D effects? Everyone seems to agree that “Toy Story 3” looks stunning. “Pixar’s animation skills have improved massively since ‘Toy Story 2,’ ” Katey Rich wrote on CinemaBlend.com . “And the 3-D only enhances the rich texture of [pink plush bear] Lotso’s fur or Ken’s flashy clothes; the ‘Toy Story’ movies have always thrilled us by giving us a new perspective on our own world, and the 3-D adds to that immersion in all the little details only Woody or [toy dinosaur] Rex would see. The movie is heavy on action sequences and executes each flawlessly, providing the sense of space and high stakes that few live-action films ever accomplish. Director Lee Unkrich, inheriting duties from John Lasseter, has a crack sense of timing, and even when the story strays a little Unkrich moves the story forward persistently without ever seeming rushed.” We’ll give the final word to Dana Stevens of Slate : ” ‘Toy Story 3’ is a near-perfect piece of popular entertainment, a children’s classic that will be watched and loved when my daughter’s (and one day, her daughter’s) now-beloved toys are gathering dust in a basement. Sh– — now I’m crying again.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Toy Story 3.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Letters To Juliet’ Star Christopher Egan Brings Out His Inner ‘Jerk’

‘To be so nasty like that is fun,’ he tells MTV News of his pessimistic character. By Jocelyn Vena Amanda Seyfried and Gael Garcia Bernal in “Letters to Juliet” Photo: Summit Entertainment What is a guy to do when he doesn’t believe in romance, yet his grandmother wants to take him on a road trip to find her long-lost love? Well, in “Letters to Juliet,” Christopher Egan’s Charlie goes along with it, lets down his walls and eventually realizes that love isn’t as scary as he thinks it is. While Charlie is a Debbie Downer about love through most of the flick, Egan is anything but that guy in real life. “[I’m] more like Sophie,” he told MTV News, alluding to Amanda Seyfried’s upbeat character in the flick, opening Friday. “I’m pretty opposite to Charlie, which is why I had so much playing him too. To bring that jerk out and to be so nasty like that is fun.” In the film, Sophie answers a fifty-year-old letter a woman named Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) wrote to Juliet and stuck in a wall where the lovesick appeal to Shakespeare’s tragic character for help. Claire and her grandson Charlie soon fly to Verona and take Sophie along on a road trip to look for the man Claire lost touch with so many decades earlier. As it turns out, Egan had some experience in the Italian road-trip department. “I’ve done a road trip across Italy with a girlfriend, and that was very romantic,” he revealed. “I think that road trips are probably one of the romantic things you can do. To take your girlfriend and just stay wherever; don’t have a destination and just drive and see where the road takes you is pretty cool.” Are you looking forward to “Letters to Juliet”?
