‘No Strings Attached’ Dangles Above Friday Box-Office Competition

Rom-com scores $7.3 million. By Mawuse Ziegbe Natalie Portman in “No Strings Attached” Photo: Cold Spring Pictures “No Strings Attached” broke away from the competition at the Friday box office. The romantic comedy about two pals who decide to test the bounds of their friendship by getting frisky in the bedroom, which stars Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher and Ludacris, kicked off the weekend with $7.3 million. “Strings” swatted “The Green Hornet” down to second place. The modern take on the old-school vigilante hero, starring Seth Rogen, scored $5.1 million. Friday’s haul nudges the flick’s total estimated tally to just over $50 million. “The Dilemma” took the third-place slot on Friday. Vince Vaughn and Kevin James’ latest laugh-getting enterprise, which revolves around a guy who struggles with whether he should let his best friend know that his seemingly perfect wife has been stepping out on him, rang up $3 million. The figure kicks the flick’s total estimated haul to $26.7 million. The historical drama “The King’s Speech” clenched the fourth-place spot. The Colin Firth vehicle added $2.14 million to its estimated $51 million haul. “True Grit” slid to the fifth spot after clenching the box-office crown in recent weeks. Featuring performances from Hollywood heavyweights like Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, the Western made $2.11 million, just behind “Speech.” The flick’s total estimated gross now stands at around $132 million. Just before “Strings” hit theaters, Portman spoke to MTV News about the film’s racy sex scenes, and dished that landing the perfect under-the-sheets moves needed some planning. “Some of the things were like, ‘What are we going to try today?’ And also, a lot of it gets choreographed because it’s like, ‘How are we going to get my hair thing out so that I don’t fall on it?’ or things like that where I’ll be like, ‘I can cover you there, and you can [cover me here],’ ” she said. “So it’s very strategic.” Check out everything we’ve got on “No Strings Attached,” “The Green Hornet” and “The Dilemma.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com.

Q-Tip ‘Not In Support’ Of Tribe Called Quest Documentary

MC tweets, ‘Filmmaker should respect the band to the point of honoring the few requests’ made about the doc. By Mawuse Ziegbe Q-Tip Photo: Mark Von Holden/WireImage A Tribe Called Quest’s game-changing legacy is slated to hit the big screen in the forthcoming documentary “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest,” which has been picked up for Sundance. A trailer for the flick recently hit the Web, and Tribe acolytes have voiced their excitement on the project’s Facebook page . However, there is one key detractor whose concerns could potentially derail anticipation for the film and diminish its credibility: Tribe frontman Q-Tip. On Thursday (December 2), the Queens MC blasted the film via his Twitter account. “I am not in support of the a tribe called quest documentary,” he wrote . The “Electric Relaxation” lyricist explained his gripes stem from creative differences between the hip-hop crew and the team behind the doc. “The filmmaker shld respect the band enough to honor our request regarding the film,” Q-Tip wrote. “The filmmaker should respect the band to the point of honoring the few requests that’s was made abt the piece.” A spokesperson for Rival Films, the production company behind the project, was not available when MTV News reached out for comment. Actor Michael Rapaport (“Bamboozled”) directed the film which, according to the flick’s website , revolves around the group’s reunion for the 2008 Rock the Bells Tour . The impact and influence of the collective is explored by fellow hip-hop luminaries like Native Tongues members Busta Rhymes and De La Soul and rap superstars like Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. Despite Q-Tip’s issues with the film, it appears to have been made not only with the band’s cooperation, but all members of the original Tribe lineup — Phife, Ali Shaheed and Jarobi — figure prominently in the project. The film will premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in January. Are you looking forward to the Tribe documentary? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Q-Tip A Tribe Called Quest

Need more details? Well, the screenings will be held at 6 p.m. at specially selected movie theaters across the country. Additionally, fans can get their tickets to the concert-film event starting on November 29. Bieber lovers who purchase passes also will receive official movie merchandise like a souvenir VIP lanyard, a glow stick, a bracelet and purple 3D glasses. “Everyone thinks this is going to be another 3D concert movie, but it’s anything but that,” Justin Bieber in a statement about the event. “It’s a story of how my family, friends and the fans helped me get here and every day are helping me live an impossible dream. That’s why I want them to see it first.” When MTV News caught up with Bieber at the American Music Awards on Sunday night, he revealed what fans can expect from the flick. “They’ll be surprised just to see I’m a regular person,” he said. “I’m a regular teenage boy. I like girls and I like to hang out with my friends. It’s gonna be taking them into my world, but also like it’s their world cause it’s just normal.” These recent comments about the flick mirror ones Bieber shared with us last month . “I want to let people know there’s a lot of people that are discouraging in life and that will tell you you can’t do something, but you just got to remember that the sky’s the limit,” he told us. “You’re able to do whatever you set your mind to as long as you remember to keep God first and stay grounded. So I think the movie really explains that, and it’s really inspiring.” Do you plan to get tickets to the advance screenings of Justin’s 3D film? Let us know in the comments.
