Youngest In Charge: Marsai Martin Talks Executive Producing And Starring In ‘LITTLE’ At Only 14-Years-Old!

Source: Eli Joshua Adé/ Universal Pictures / Eli Joshua Adé/ Universal Pictures Marsai Martin Talks Producing And Starring In Upcoming Universal Pictures Film ‘Little’ If you’ve already seen the trailer for the new film ‘Little’ which was released today you probably have a good idea of just how incredible leading lady Marsai Martin is — but BOSSIP had the opportunity to go on set with the actress — who at only 14 is also EXECUTIVE PRODUCING the film along with her father Josh Martin and Regina Hall. It turns out that Martin came up with the concept when she was just ten-years-old, and the actress, along with her parents, brought the idea to “blackish” creator Kenya Barris (who along with Will Packer and James Lopez, is also producing the movie). Marsai teased the coming trailer earlier this week on Instagram We found out on set just how strategic Martin is, as she described how it all came about: “I was talking to Daddy and Mommy about some of their favorite movies when they were growing up and one of mine was ‘BIG’ with Tom Hanks,” Martin told BOSSIP and other media during the set visit last fall. “So that’s really how the idea was brought out, that’s where it all started and we started brainstorming, to see how we could create a black girl magic situation.” After coming up with the basic outline the Martins wasted no time trying to bring their daughter’s concept to life. “At the Season 1 of “blackISH,” I think it was the season finale, dad went to Kenya like ‘Marsai has this dope idea,’” the actress recalled. “Kenya ended up liking it and right after was calling Will [Packer] like ‘Yo… Diane from “blackish” has a dope idea.” After that we had a meeting with him and James [Lopez] and after that he bought it and after that we went to Universal and they bought it and it wasn’t long before we shot it. I mean like, three years?” “I’m very grateful and very honored that they were just like saying yes to this 10-year-old who just popped out with this blazer and all of these things,” Martin said. “They could have said no but they actually believed in me and the story we wanted to tell.” The young starlet says she has aspirations of some day hosting “SNL” or the “Emmy’s” and experiencing the kind of success that she could retire at 18. “But I won’t!” Marsai promised. Well — if the Academy is listening they may have their perfect host right here. In the meantime, Martin’s father is focused on making sure his daughter is just as successful at life as she is the film industry. “One of the things we teach her is to live in the moment,” Josh Martin said of his teenage daughter. “Live in your moment, you don’t have to worry about what two years from now looks like. Live in your now and enjoy it! There’s no rush to grow up. Don’t start thinking too far ahead because life happens.” Marsai’s early success is no surprise to her father, who says by the age of two she was an avid film buff, enjoying projects like ‘Lackawanna Blues’ and the Ray Charles biopic ‘Ray,’ which she could mimic without actually watching. “It would be playing behind her on a screen and she would be mirroring all the moves. It was funny, she became this family party favor, grandparents would be sippin’ on something and be like ‘Look, look, do the thing…’” Josh Martin recalled. “We kinda stumbled up on it. All of this just fell into place and I’m glad it did because she really loves it.” One particular angle of ‘Little’ that hit particularly close to home was the underlying message about bullying that’s at the core of the storyline. “Jordan when she’s 13-years-old, she’s just like this sweet quirky girl, doesn’t care what anyone thinks and the more she grows up she realizes ‘Oh snap, people are bullying me, what can I do to stop this?” Marsai says. “So she started bullying them first. She thought that was the solution for people to stop messing with her.” Martin’s dad told BOSSIP that in this era of social media, he’s particularly proud that his daughter hasn’t allowed online bullying to affect her at all. “I can tell you this, the social media has been a gift and a curse, because before she was fully engaged in being this Hollywood actress she was following people like Beyoncé, people she liked, YouTubers, then she got to read comments and see a lot of people just wanted to see a reaction so she got to see how a lot of how social media worked and what she wanted her voice to be on social media and when she saw something she knew not to react. One of the things we taught her was not to look at the comments. One day somebody had said something to Skai Jackson and Skai responded and the only thing the person said was, “Oh my God, Skai replied to me.” And she was like “Oh, this is how it works?” She’s a really big fan of Beyoncé and she used to read a lot of the comments that people would leave about Beyoncé and she saw she wouldn’t give them any attention, I also make sure my presence is felt wherever she is, I let it be known she has a mother and a father and I will make a scene because I don’t care.” Well her film beginnings may be ‘LITTLE’ but it’s clear there are big things to come in the future for Marsai and it sounds like she’s got a great team behind her — both professional and family. Stay tuned for more great coverage from our set visit coming soon. Don’t forget, ‘LITTLE’ lands in theaters April 12!

Nothin’ Booler Than Giving Back: YG Donates $150,000 To GirlCodeLA

On August 1, 2018, rapper and entrepreneur YG donated $150,000 to startup company GirlCodeLA to help usher in a generation of Los Angeles girl coders. YG is setting out to create more opportunities for future female entrepreneurs and that can be attributed to his close relationship with business partner Karen Civil. “Gender bias plays a role in the amount of exposure students receive in regards to technology and coding. This leads to influence future decisions within their field, creating smaller opportunities for diveristy. With my donation, I hope they’ll be able to expand their reach of future female coders and programmers. I want to make sure I’m doing my part, I got a daughter and I respect the G Code.” GirlCodeLA is an organization that is aimed to develop and continue to expose young women to computer science, business, and software engineering. All participants have the opportunity to learn, understand, and execute a plan to develop a career through classes, seminars, and hands on training. The organization was founded by  entrepreneur, Dez White, she turned her interests toward technology and application development into a success story when she launched Invisible Text which turned into Invisible Social, Invisible Email, and Invisible Call in 2014.

For The Old-Heads: Nickelodeon Reveals Plans To Bring Back “Double Dare” Game Show This Summer

Nickelodeon To Bring Back ‘Double Dare’ For those of you old enough to recall Nickelodeon’s OG “slime” days, there’s some good nostalgia on the horizon. According to TMZ , the kids’ network plans to dust off a classic for a new generation of kids to enjoy. Double Dare, the classic game show where two teams faced off on trivia questions and subsequent physical challenges — typically covering themselves in loads of slime and other unidentifiable goo in the process — will return in a few short weeks. If that weren’t enough, original host Mark Summers will be back in the driver’s seat. He won’t be the host this time around, as he’s in his mid-60’s at this point, but he will have Executive Producer credit and an on-camera role, for those of you watching the game show you grew up on with kids of your own at this point. The original show ran from 1986-1993, with a couple years of reruns thereafter, and a reboot arriving back in 2000 called “Double Dare 2000.” So for those of you who have no idea what we’re talking about here…that’s probably why. We wonder…will they’ll still be giving out BK Diamond Cells as grand prizes? Getty

Courtesy Mekka Don Mekka Don Has An Important Message In Latest Song Earlier this week BOSSIP spent some time with rapper Mekka Don (who is also an Ohio State and NYU educated lawyer! ) to discuss his upcoming project ‘Fly With Me’ which includes his single “To Elijah”. The video for the song went viral when it was released on Twitter last month and we’re sharing it below: I more then ever started to realize my mortality when my son was born. That feeling scared me into memorializing the things that I’d want to teach him in case my time on this Earth ends early. Feel free to share. To: Elijah pic.twitter.com/hwfP7VBx1x — Mekka Don (@MekkaDonMusic) March 1, 2018 The video drew heavy praise from the likes of celebrities including Chuck D, Taj George (SWV), numerous athletes and more. Mekka Don told BOSSIP the song came about after he felt a stronger sense of mortality following his son’s birth. He says that, much like T’Chaka’s message to T’Challa in ‘Black Panther,’ he realized that a father who hasn’t prepared his son for his death has failed him and he wanted to be sure his son would get the proper lessons from him. Mekka Don also made two appearances on CBS 46 in Atlanta this week, speaking with Sharon Reed about the song and its important message. #NationalWalkoutDay: Patriotic Students Across America Ditch Class To Protest The Government’s Refusal To End Mass Shootings

Image via Justin Sullivan/Getty Students Across America Participate In #NationalWalkoutDay Today marks a historic day in America. For almost 20 years now, since the Columbine massacre in 1999, the United States has been ravaged by mass shootings, many of them at public schools and college campuses. The children who attend those schools have had e-f**king-nough. March 14, 2018 is #NationalWalkoutDay and students all over the country have abandoned their classrooms and taken to the streets to let the state and federal government know that they no longer wish to be murdered while trying to receive an education. According to CNN and NYDailyNews , Students from LaGuardia High School in New York, Sayerville High School in New Jersey, Maryland’s Montgomery Blair High School, Walworth Barbour American International School in Israel (yes, ISRAEL!!!), Florida’s grieving Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and scores of other schools have sanctioned walkouts in solidarity of a common cause. Common sense gun reform. Sadly, some hatin’ azz adults want to stifle the voices of the youth like this heffa at Cambridge High School in Milton, Georgia. Cambridge High School silences our voices after a peaceful protest saying this is supposed to be a peaceful demonstration, but apparently a speech isn't peaceful #whoknew #NationalWalkoutDay pic.twitter.com/GWJOSrjKky — Grace Parzych (@ParzychGrace) March 14, 2018 In other cities, it appeared that some schools were completely apathetic to the cause… “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy .” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. #NationalWalkoutDay https://t.co/sBtJ0II6YG — Ava DuVernay (@ava) March 14, 2018 One girl was even arrested for her civil disobedience. Aminah Glenn, a junior at Kenwood Academy, was arrested for participating in #NationalWalkoutDay ! Let her go!!! Please help get the word out! : @pete_grieve #Chicago pic.twitter.com/JRkPDKbgS8 — EighteenX18 (@EighteenX18) March 14, 2018 Watching America’s youth take grown azz people to task for their incompetence and inability to take action against violence is truly glorious. “There is no compromise. We are not seeking a Republican solution or a Democratic solution. We are seeking an American resolution.” #NationalWalkoutDay (via CBS) pic.twitter.com/HTXglhgDWK — Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) March 14, 2018 Be clear, there is FAR more love and support than hate. Amber Rose posted up photos of her son Sebastian , who she is now calling her “twin” due to his entirely platinum blonde head of hair. Amber must not have been feeling the comments on the first pic because her caption on the second went all the way into detail. Lol he begged me for a whole year to dye his hair blonde like mine so we started with a little patch and I told him when he turns 5 I will make him a full blonde like his mommy. He will be 5 on the 21st of February! He’s so happy and none of you dirty little trolls can take that away from him or me! P.S Love your children unconditionally and let them be creative this world will be a better place Granted, he’s her child and she can do as she decides BUT we’re also talking about chemicals close to the brain. Isn’t there good reason pregnant women are advised against dyeing their hair? Still… Bash has had quite a bit of blonde for a while. Hit the flip to see

‘They’ Schools: Study Shows American Kids (And Teachers) Are Dismally Uneducated About Slavery

Kean Collection/Getty Images High School Students And Educators Woefully Uninformed About Slavery This should come as no surprise as many times as we’ve posted about some of the stupid lessons on slavery kids are receiving in the US, but a new report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project reveals the widespread failure to accurately teach the history of American slavery and enslaved people. According to Atlantic reports Teaching Tolerance conducted online surveys of 1,000 American high-school seniors and more than 1,700 social-studies teachers across the country. The group also reviewed 10 commonly used U.S.-history textbooks, and examined 15 sets of state standards to assess what students know, what educators teach, what publishers include, and what standards require vis-à-vis slavery. What they found was that only 8 percent of 12th-graders could identify slavery as the cause of the Civil War. Fewer than one-third (32 percent) correctly named the 13th Amendment as the formal end of U.S. slavery, with a slightly higher share (35 percent) choosing the Emancipation Proclamation. And fewer than half (46 percent) identified the “Middle Passage” as the transport of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. Fewer than one-quarter (22 percent) of participating high-school seniors knew that “protections for slavery were embedded in [America’s] founding documents”—that rather than a “peculiar institution” of the South, slavery was a Constitutionally enshrined right. And fewer than four in 10 students surveyed (39 percent) understood how slavery “shaped the fundamental beliefs of Americans about race and whiteness.” The teachers didn’t do much better than the students. While teachers overwhelmingly (92 percent) claim they are “comfortable discussing slavery” in their classroom, only slightly more than half (52 percent) teach their students about slavery’s legal roots in the nation’s founding documents, while just 53 percent emphasize the extent of slavery outside of the antebellum South. And 54 percent teach the continuing legacy of slavery in today’s society. Additionally, dozens of teachers rely on “simulations”—role-playing and games—to teach slavery, a method that Teaching Tolerance has warned against on the grounds that it can lead to stereotypes and oversimplification. Meanwhile, a large majority—73 percent—use “slaves” when talking about slavery in the classroom instead of “enslaved persons” (49 percent), the latter term of which has gained favor for emphasizing the humanity of those forced into bondage. That’s a strong point about slaves vs. enslaved persons. Did you ever consider the impact of the wording? Also those games and simulations are how so many teachers are getting in trouble. Teachers — stop playing GAMES. Just keep it 100 with the kids and make sure they know HUMANS were treated INHUMANELY! LaGarrett King, an assistant professor of social-studies education at the University of Missouri, served on the Teaching Tolerance advisory board that developed a framework for teaching American slavery—basically, the concepts that every graduating high-school senior should know—as part of the report’s recommendations. As a teacher educator, he said the study fills a significant void. Students training to be teachers, especially those being educated to teach in elementary schools, know little about the history of slavery, he stated, noting that “much curriculum and teaching around racially and ethnically diverse [people] features a fun—foods and festival—approach to learning.” By contrast, King said, the framework provides a guide to delve into topics such as slavery and black history with a thorough and academically sound approach, versus teaching slavery in reductive and superficial ways. “Can you teach slavery without it being psychologically violent to the children? The answer is no, violence will occur and is expected,” he said. “The key is the recognition of white supremacy and [of] the humanity of black people that helps aid in the complexity of the subject.” What steps do you think need to be taken to make sure that the harsh realities of slavery and the impact of the institution on America overall are taught? Continue reading
