Lamar Odom: A Timeline of Tragedy, Love, Loss … and Redemption?

A year ago at this time, we saw  Lamar Odom fighting for his life in a Las Vegas hospital, having come back from the brink of death. Now, he's finalized his divorce from Khloe Kardashian and is back in rehab , having apparently fallen on some hard times again. As we hope that he can finally get back on track, it's worth sadly remembering all the former basketball star has been through. How can one person endure so much, from youth to adulthood? And can we expect things to turn out any differently this time? Read. Think. Discuss. 1. Left All Alone Lamar’s mother died of cancer when he as 12 years old. His father, Joe Odom, was addicted to heroine and scarcely in the picture when Odom was a child. 2. Off-Court Troubles Odom was a high school phenom on the basketball court. However, academic troubles (along with a citation for soliciting prostitution) plagued Odom prior to him transferring from UNLV to the University of Rhode Island. 3. On to the NBA Odom was selected fourth overall in the 1999 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers. A couple years later, he was suspended twice in an eight-month span for marijuana use. 4. Goodbye to Grandma In 2003, Odom’s maternal grandmother Mildred, who helped raise him, passed away. 5. An Unspeakable Loss Three years later, Odom’s 6-month-old son, Jayden, died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome while sleeping in his crib. 6. Another Death in the Family In 2011, a 24-year-old cousin to whom Lamar was close was murdered while Odom was in New York to shoot a Nike commercial. View Slideshow

Jay Z Posts Video Birthday Card for Beyonce, Continues to Squash Divorce Rumors

Remember when a new Beyonce-Jay Z divorce rumor seemed to surface every day? Well, ever since their tour ended, the hip hop power couple has done a complete 180, and now every 24 hours gives us more evidence that Jay and Bey are tighter than ever. As you may have heard, yesterday was Beyonce’s 33rd birthday . The Internet dubbed the occasion “Bey Day” and naturally Jigga got in on the celebration by paying someone to produce a 30-second video clip: Jay Z: Happy Birthday Beyonce! Now that’s love. The Carters also spent the day vacationing in Corsica, and Jay reportedly gifted Bey with diamonds, so we’re sure she was willing to overlook the fact that he clearly had nothing to do with the YouTube clip. What’s more puzzling than why Jay bothered with the upload when the entire Internet is basically one big love letter to Beyonce, is how the hell these two went from the brink of divorce to Hollywood’s happiest couple over night. It’s almost enough to make us believe Bey’s dads claims that the divorce rumors were a “trick” to boost ticket sales . Of course, that raises a whole bunch of other questions about why such a fabulously wealthy couple would resort to such a cheap trick to fool their fans. We prefer to think the Carters were on the rocks but then they both simultaneously realized that they have the best lives on earth and decided to stay together for the awesomeness. Beyonce and Jay-Z: A Happy Marriage? 1. Bey and Jey Beyonce and Jay-Z sure look happy together in this photo, don’t they?

Amanda Bynes Psychiatric Hold Extended Two Weeks; Parents to Seek Control Today

A judge has granted a two-week extension of Amanda Bynes’ psychiatric hold, while her parents will try to seek a legal conservatorship over her today. If the judge, who held a hearing at the hospital where she’s staying, declined to extend the 72-hour hold, Amanda could’ve walked out last night. He did not, however, after doctors successfully argued that they need an additional two weeks to properly diagnose Amanda Bynes’ severe mental illness . Amanda was represented by her own lawyer, arguing for the extension to be denied. She will most likely fight any bid for a conservatorship, as well. In seeking legal control over their 27-year-old daughter, Bynes’ parents will argue that she suffers from schizophrenia but will not seek  treatment . This is because in her mind, she doesn’t believe she has an illness, therefore the only way to keep her safe is to provide round-the-clock care. Due to the circumstances surrounding her hospitalization and 5150 hold , it’s not a stretch to say she’s in danger and could harm herself or others. Establishing a conservatorship is challenging, however. In order to gain control over her medical, legal and financial affairs, her parents must prove: That Amanda Bynes does not have the ability to provide for her own health on even the most basic levels – food, clothing and shelter.  She cannot make sound financial decisions. They can provide a stable home for her. There are no realistic alternatives. We’ll know in a few hours if they’re successful, but given that she set a random driveway on fire and soaked her dog in gasoline , this might be the best option. Whatever happens, there is hope. Britney Spears was in a similar position 5-6 years ago and this same arrangement brought her back from the brink.

Keith Olbermann Wins Award for ‘Excellence in Electronic Journalism’

It sure is a sign of the times when one of the most disgraceful and unashamedly liberal personalities in the television news industry wins an award for “excellence in electronic journalism.” Despite the seeming incongruity, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann won an Edward R. Murrow award Wednesday from the Radio Television Digital News Association. So what did Olbermann win for you ask? Writing the following tribute to his mother which aired on “Countdown” shortly after her death last year (video follows with commentary): In fairness to Olbermann, it was indeed a charming segment about her love for the game of baseball, though not surprisingly self-aggrandizing like virtually everything he does on and off the air. Of particular note was a video clip he showed of an interview he did with his mother after she was hit by a ball at a game at Yankee stadium on June 17, 2000. At the time he was working for Fox Sports. Readers are encouraged to forward to minute 3:45 when Olbermann asks his mother, “Have you been surprised by all the newspaper attention?” Her response told viewers everything they needed to know about the MSNBCer’s ego, “A little bit, but I want to know why they keep mentioning you!”  Delicious. In the end, as much as I find Keith Olbermann to be a disgusting caricature of what television journalism has degraded to in the past decade, this was certainly a touching tribute to his mother who in 2009, without any warning or apparent symptoms, died two weeks after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. I can imagine the pain he must have been going through at the time, and how difficult it was to get through those seven minutes without shedding a tear. Nice job, Keith.   That said, was this the best-written piece of electronic journalism last year, or did the folks at RTDNA get swept away by the emotional tug at the heartstrings? After all, 2009 was an eventful year what with America inaugurating its first black president, Tea parties breaking out all over the country, members of Congress getting verbally abused at town hall meetings, and the economy coming back from the brink of a depression. With this in mind, was one anchorman’s on air tribute to HIS mother REALLY worthy of such a commendation?   Before you answer, consider that NBC and MSNBC won more Murrow awards this year than any other news outlet. Any questions?
