Was Funny People ‘Adam Sandler’s Passion of the Christ?’

Cole Abaius over at Film School Rejects performs a post-mortem on Adam Sandler ‘s increasingly inane recent output of comedies, as parodied brilliantly in Judd Apatow’s Funny People (then subsequently embraced with stinkers like Jack and Jill — life imitating art imitating life?). “The most prominent George Simmons film in Funny People is a gem called Re-Do where an overworked lawyer is transmuted by magic into the body of an infant,” Abaius observes. “By playing Simmons, Sandler was directly commenting on the hollow nature of a lot of his own work.” The George Simmons Conundrum has been the single most infuriating/perplexing factor in Sandler-watching in the past few years. Clearly he was self-aware enough to recognize and mock his own image and career dependence on stupid high-concept comedies, rather perfectly addressed in the underrated Funny People . So why continued the streak of Razzie-worthy crapfests? For the mainstream money? To meet perceived audience expectations? Because it’s easy*? * We have a winner. [ Film School Rejects ]

Watch the Surreal First Trailer for Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill

Wow. Just wowwwwwww . When it was announced last year that Adam Sandler would play his own twin sister in the comedy Jack and Jill , it seemed like a joke — specifically, the type that Sandler and Judd Apatow made about the star’s career in Funny People . Only, it’s not a joke; Jack and Jill is real, and it’s got the craziest trailer you’ll see all summer.

Judd Apatow Still Defending Dick Jokes

I wasn’t kidding when I said that n+1 was here to light up your favorite films and filmmakers with its criticism, and look at that: It took less than a week for Judd Apatow to fire back at an essayist who distilled the appeal of Apatow’s oeuvre to a basic theme: “As long as you behave yourself, take on a modicum of responsibility, and wear the yoke of commitment, it is entirely acceptable — even preferable and profitable — to be stupid.” Interrupting his viewing of Real Housewives of New Jersey , Apatow responded, “I am sure I do have all sorts of problems and shortcomings he can read into the work, but that is the fun in making it. I don’t know what it all adds up to. I just express myself. Maybe one day I will be able to judge it myself but I am too in the middle of it to do it now.” Also: “The only thing more troubling than making jokes about the male penis would be to be serious and honor the male penis.” Now you know. Stacking Jack & Jill Up Against the Fake Adam Sandler Movies in Funny People

The news that Katie Holmes — and, apparently, Al Pacino!? — has been cast in Adam Sandler’s Jack & Jill came as a bit of a shock this morning… if only because it means Jack & Jill still exists. This is the movie that was announced last year with Sandler tapped to play “twin siblings at odds during Thanksgiving.” Seriously? Seriously. If that sounds like the pitch to one of the fake Sandler films from Judd Apatow’s Funny People , that’s probably because it might be. Ahead, Movieline pits Jack & Jill against the oeuvre of George Simmons.

Tracy Morgan’s Feud with Stedman, and 6 Other Factoids About the 30 Rock Star

For today’s “Funny People”-themed episode of Oprah , the media empress wrangled three NBC comedians into her studio to make her audience laugh. Tina Fey and Steve Carell entertained the studio by talking about licking stripper poles and humping stages on the set of Date Night (which Oprah endorsed as “laugh-out-loud funny!”). Then the next comedian, Tracy Morgan, took the stage. Only instead of just sharing some knee slappers, the 30 Rock star got gritty when Oprah revealed a school picture of Morgan at the age of six. “Awwwww,” the studio audience cooed. “Yeah,” responded Morgan, “that’s the year my dad left me!” And that was only first bit of knowledge dropped on audience members — the rest, including the subject that made Morgan tear up instantly, after the jump.
