via Huffington Post The nation’s “rattiest city” is putting subway rodents on birth control. Egg loss and testicle problems await Chicago’s rat population once the Chicago Transit Authority rolls out a rodent-specific birth control program next year, RedEye Chicago reports. The CTA’s new pilot program will use a semi-liquid bait that eventually makes rats infertile when ingested multiple times. Arizona-based rodent control company SenesTech, which makes the bait, says on its website that the non-lethal product is “specifically formulated for rats and does not affect other animal species or humans.” The bait, which reportedly tastes like egg cream, can decrease a rat’s litter size “as early as 2 weeks after ingestion,” according to the company. RedEye reports that rats usually become sterile within eight to 12 weeks of exposure. Last year, SenesTech’s bait was tested in several Manhattan subway stations and Grand Central Terminal as part of a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Biologist Loretta Mayer, CEO of SenesTech, told The Wall Street Journal that the results of the study were “extremely compelling” — roughly half of the rats in the small-scale study took the bait, leading to a 43 percent decline in the rat population of tested facilities. “It could cut it down to the point where New Yorkers won’t see rats,” Mayer said. CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski told The Huffington Post via email that the agency does not actually have a rodent problem, but that the pilot program is a way of staying ahead of the pests. “[I]f there are ways we can do even better, we want to look at them,” Hosinski explained. “This pilot is simply the latest measure we’re looking to test in our ongoing, pro-active efforts to protect health and safety of customers and employees.” Chicago has turned to alternative rat abatement strategies before, including a “Cats At Work” program in which feral cats from a local Humane Society are used to curb the rat population.
‘Gone Till November’ will come out two years after Weezy’s release from Rikers Island. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne has a story to tell. Well, Lil Wayne probably has a bunch of stories to tell, but this fall the multiplatinum rap superstar will release “Gone Till November,” his memoir based on the diaries he kept while he was locked up for eight months on Rikers Island in New York. The book, which will come out in November, two years after Weezy’s release from prison, is being described as an internal monologue, according to the Associated Press . It will be released through Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group. Weezy was freed from Rikers Island on November 4, 2010, after he served eight months of a year-long sentence for an attempted gun possession charge. Police had arrested the rapper in 2007 following his headlining performance at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Wayne eventually pleaded guilty to the charge and turned himself in to authorities in March of 2010. MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway caught up with Wayne in Miami at a welcome-home party just days after his prison release. When asked how his transition from prison was going, Weezy simply responded with a grin. “I forgot about yesterday,” he said after thanking his fans and family for their support. He hasn’t completely forgotten, however, now that Wayne, who has since toured the world and released his double-platinum Tha Carter IV, plans to reminisce a little. Friends and family gather in New York for a peaceful demonstration to honor fallen college student. By D.L. Chandler Students in New York’s Grand Central Terminal honor Danroy Henry on Friday Photo: Claire Finnegan Although much of the criticism levied towards Watch The Throne has been focused primarily on the braggadocious rhymes from Kanye West and Jay-Z , the pair tackled serious fare several times throughout the album — most notably on the track “Murder To Excellence” in which Jay-Z dedicated his rhyme to the memory of a college football player on the cusp of his 21st birthday. Danroy Henry, forever immortalized in verse by Jay-Z’s opening line on the track, was a student at Pace University in suburban Westchester County, New York and a member of its football team. During a celebratory night with friends at a local bar last October after a Pace win, Henry reportedly ran two officers down with his car who then ended up on the hood of his vehicle and began to open fire, killing Henry and injuring two passengers. Further insult to the Henry family came when Pleasantville police officer Aaron Hess was given an officer of the year award. In February, Hess was cleared of any wrongdoing by grand jury although the Henry family is still pursuing justice in the case. Friends of Danroy — affectionately known as DJ — Henry gathered Friday (August 12) at New York City’s Grand Central station to stage a peaceful gathering in the memory of their fallen friend and also cleverly timed their call against police brutality with the release of Watch The Throne as well. Organized partly by Claire Finnegan, sister to one of DJ’s teammates Patrick, the gathering of friends honoring DJ’s life numbered to about fifty people according to Ms. Finnegan. “DJ was really one of the best guys you’d ever meet. He was a good kid and so upstanding,” shared Ms. Finnegan in a phone interview with MTV. “He was one of those guys who would give you anything he had. He was just that good of a guy.” Ms. Finnegan further shared that their gathering was disrupted by police officers although an off duty cop was said to have shown support to the group’s cause. With golden balloons adorned with the Jay-Z line “This is to the memory of Danroy Henry” and “Watch The Throne” on the adjacent side, the gatherers all timed the release of the helium filled balloons into the air much to the chagrin of the police officials inside the station. Although the memorial was met with some resistance, Ms. Finnegan vowed that more public demonstrations are to come and informed MTV that Henry’s parents have started the “DJ Dream Fund” inn Henry’s home state of Massachusetts which will strive to provide sports-related resources to children and to remember DJ via his love of athletics. My name is Samantha and my Bieber experience happened Thursday June 23rd, 2011. The best day of my life. Justin Bieber has got me through so much and my dream was just to spend 10 seconds with him. The best 10 seconds of my life. My friend and I woke up at 3 in the morning on Wednesday, took a 4 o’clock train to Grand Central in Manhattan and ran to Macy’s where we waited on line with hundreds of other girls, hoping we would be within the first 350 girl to buy his package. At around 10am, security gave us numbers. My number was 189. That is my new lucky number. As soon as my friends and I got the numbers we broke out in tears. It was one of the happiest moments of my life, I knew that one day I would meet my idol. Justin Bieber’s music and the way he is just makes me happy when I feeling down, which is a lot recently because of family problems I listen to “Never say Never”. It lightens up my day! When we got to Macy’s on the 23th, we waited on line for 4 hours to see him. As soon as he got there I bursted into tears. I don’t know why I was crying but it just made me so happy that I had to. When I went up for my turn to take the picture with him, I was shaking. As we were smiling for the picture he started talking to me. Now looking back at what he was saying to me, it just makes me smile. I will always remember that moment. When I had to get off the stage, he rubbed my back, and I couldn’t move or say anything. All I remember after that was seeing people take pictures of me crying and Justin’s manager Scooter directing me where to get the pictures. I will always remember that day. I love Justin Bieber. That is my experience. – Samantha Camac See the original post: My name is Samantha and my Bieber experience happened Thursday…
“A handful of down-jacketed and be-goggled models wearing the brand’s experimental Grenoble line threaded their way to a standstill amongst the melee of travelers and fashion people. However, like the Red Sea, the crowd miraculously parted. And then the models, swelling gradually in number to a total of 160, began to dance. Fortunately, these were dancers who could model and not the other way around…. Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : mattmaison Discovery Date : 15/02/2011 18:01 Number of articles : 2
By late afternoon Monday, Metro-North Railroad restored service to all four tracks on the Harlem River railroad bridge after an 11:40 a.m. fire under the span stopped all rail service to and from Grand Central Terminal, Metro-North spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said. Firefighters extinguished the fire around 1:35 p.m., according to Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for New York City Fire Department, with no injuries. The cause of the fire is still being determined, but does not appear suspicious, Dwyer sa
