Big Sean First Pick For MTV Jams’ Fab 5

Rapper tells MTV News his Finally Famous is ‘best album in the world.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Big Sean Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images It’s going to be a hot summer. Just ask G.O.O.D. Music recording artist Big Sean , whose first album, Finally Famous, debuted at #3 on the Billboard albums chart after it dropped in June. Now Sean is setting things off as the first of MTV Jams’ 2011 Fab 5. Conceived in 2005 on MTV Jams, the Fab 5 is a collection of the most outstanding new hip-hop artists of the year who have made a visual impact on the road to releasing their debut albums. Fab 5 alumni include Juelz Santana, Tony Yayo, Paul Wall, Young Jeezy, Kid Cudi and Drake. This year MTV Jams, MTV News and Sucker Free will bring you 2011’s hottest new hip-hop upstarts, and Big Sean is up first! In the past year, Sean has emerged from being a G.O.O.D. Music understudy to one of the main stars on Kanye West’s squad. With his playful flow and witty lyrics, Sean proved this year that he can make hit records when he snagged the #1 spot on Billboard ‘s rap singles chart with “My Last” featuring Chris Brown. He also just shot the video for his next single, “Marvin & Chardonnay.” The K. West and Roscoe Dash-assisted track is poised to pick up where his last hit left off. But who is Big Sean exactly? In his own words: “Big Sean is a Detroit player, a dreamer. Somebody who went against the grain who realized following your heart is way more important than following your head. And somebody who when I look back on life, I don’t have to say, ‘I wish I coulda, woulda, shoulda did anything.’ ” The pint-sized MC got his moniker because of a 6’8″ friend who had the same name. “His name was Sean too, so they called me Big Sean and him Little Sean, just to be funny,” he said. “It’s way fresher for me to be little and people have to call me big.” Since rolling with Team Kanye, things have only gotten bigger, and the fame has brought about some strange occurrences for Sean, especially on Twitter. He recalled a time when someone posted a childhood picture, lifted from his grandmother’s house, on the social networking site. “I’m like, ‘How the hell did you get this picture?’ ” he said. “The Internet is powerful; it’s crazy.” Wise words indeed. Sean also reveals that if he were down to his last $10, he’d splurge on … who else but himself? “I would spend it on the best album in the world: Finally Famous. ” That he is! Check back here every Monday for the next four weeks to find out who will join Big Sean in the Fab 5. And tune in to “RapFix Live,” where each artist will be highlighted. Paramore’s ‘Monster’ Video Premieres

Clip hints at past dramas and points to the long road ahead. By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams in their “Monster” video Photo: Fueled By Ramen Last month, Paramore roared back to life with “Monster,” the first song they’ve released since the rather acrimonious departure of founding members Josh and Zac Farro in December. In the track, Hayley Williams seemed to be singing about nothing but the Farros (Josh in particular) and how Paramore are pushing on without them. But if the song is about the interpersonal relationships that cause a band to fall apart (and subsequently come back together again), well, then the video — which just premiered on MTV.com — seems to be about the band itself. Or, more specifically, the band as a sort of machine, one that never stops running and seems designed to continually churn through members. In this case, it is the Monster. And it must be fed. Or something like that. Because the “Monster” video is one gigantic M

B.o.B’s New Album Not Focused On Features

Producer Jim Jonsin says The Adventures of Bobby Ray singer ‘wants it to be his album.’ By Rob Markman B.o.B Photo: MTV News B.o.B is out embarking on another adventure. After his 2010 debut, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, produced chart-topping singles and an RIAA-certified gold plaque, the Atlanta rapper is back in the studio crafting his next LP all by his lonesome. “What Bob wanted to do was go into the lab himself and spend his time creating what he wanted his album to have, the direction he wanted,” producer Jim Jonsin told MTV News. “So we’re waiting on him to come back with that house that he’s built so we can go ahead and put all the fixtures in and try to help with it.” Jonsin, who signed B.o.B to his Rebel Rock label, where the artist remains inked alongside T.I.’s Grand Hustle imprint (under Atlantic Records), said that after sessions earlier this year during which he and Bob cut “three or four records,” the “Nothin’ On You” rapper is now out working on the album alone, similar to the recording process on his debut. “Same way it was with the last album. Bob is very creative, he’s a producer, he’s a writer, he’s a real artist,” Jonsin said. While The Adventures of Bobby Ray was heavy on features, with contributions from Bruno Mars, Hayley Williams, Rivers Cuomo and Eminem, Jonsin said the plan for now is for B.o.B to make the album his own. “He doesn’t want to do the feature records; he wants it to be his album,” he said. In that respect, Jonsin, who has created hit records with Lil Wayne, Eminem and Usher, said he’s happy just letting Bob do his own thing and coming in to assist with production duties once the rapper has already laid his foundation. “He does have his ideas and his direction, and everyone feeds off of that,” the multiplatinum producer said. “The A&Rs, the label knows, Tip knows, I know where he’s going. We just gotta hear it, and then we can help him with it.” So far, Bob hasn’t announced a release date or a title for his new album, but in May, the singer told MTV News he’s actually been working on this album for quite some time. “It’s the right timing, and I haven’t revealed the name of the album yet,” he said, “but I’ve been working on this since before The Adventures of Bobby Ray, so it’s a real special project.” What do you expect B.o.B’s new album to sound like? Paramore Roar Back With New Single, ‘Monster’

Band’s first song since the departure of Josh and Zac Farro seems to address breakup. By James Montgomery Paramore Photo: Jordan Strauss/ Getty Images “You” can be a worrisome word. A weighty one. By its very definition — “the one or ones being addressed” — it is up for interpretation, and when it’s used in a song, things get even more muddy. Does “you” refer to the listener or the public at large? Does it take the place of the subject of the lyric, someone who has wronged, inspired, doubted, betrayed the writer? Or does “you” even have to be a person? Couldn’t someone “want” or “love” a refreshing beverage or an old car or, you know, drugs? Shoot, now that we’re on the subject, maybe we’re never supposed to figure out who or what “you” is referring to (the classic example, of course, being Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” which is apparently about Warren Beatty … or David Geffen … or David Bowie, depending on whom you ask). I only bring this up because in Paramore’s brand-new song “Monster,” which premiered Friday on the band’s official

Green Day Defeat Paramore In Musical March Madness Championship

The 2011 MMM title game went down to the wire, but in the end, it’s Green Day who stand triumphant. By James Montgomery Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: C Flanigan/ FIlmMagic It’s all over but the shouting (and there’s still plenty of that): Green Day are the champions of MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness tournament, knocking off an upset-minded Paramore in Monday’s title game to claim the crown. Check out our MMM Bracket right here! In a contest that was waaay more thrilling — and higher scoring — than the actual NCAA basketball championship game, the guys in Green Day jumped out to an early lead, then held on for dear life as Hayley Williams and company staged a furious second-half comeback … one that, ultimately, fell short as polls closed at midnight. All in all, more than 120,000 votes were cast in the matchup, and Green Day ended up winning by fewer than 2,500. It was a nail-biter, a squeaker, and it came down to the wire. In other words, it was everything you could possibly want in a title game. And, in Green Day, we have everything we could possibly want in a champion. After an ugly opening-round loss in last year’s MMM tournament, the pop-punk veterans committed themselves to redemption, and tipped off the 2011 competition by blasting Adam Lambert in round one. Focused, Green Day then took out their frustrations on fellow heavyweights U2 and Blink-182, before surviving scares from Panic! at the Disco in the Elite Eight and Disturbed in the Final Four. And now, having bested Paramore, they stand atop the MMM mountain … battle tested, redeemed and, ultimately, triumphant. So congratulations to Billie Joe, Tr

Paramore Plan To Release New Music This Summer

Hayley Williams says band will hit the studio after wrapping South American tour in March. By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: MTV News Paramore just launched their much-discussed run of South American shows (their first gigs since the departure of Josh and Zac Farro in December) and now, it seems they’re getting to something else they spent a whole lot of time talking about since the Farros split: making new music. In a new interview with AOL Music , frontwoman Hayley Williams said she and her remaining Paramore mates were already making studio plans and are “hoping to record a batch of songs to release over the summer.” That announcement echoed sentiments she expressed to MTV News in December, when Williams made it clear that not only were they already writing new tunes , but that they would “definitely” be releasing some of them in 2011. And the last time we checked, “the summer” was definitely part of 2011. Williams also identified one track, “In the Mourning” — a demo of which she posted on her blog in January — as a song Paramore are focused on finishing and releasing, plus a handful of other new tracks too. Those songs would precede a brand-new album, which the band is also making plans to begin work on. “We definitely do want to release [‘In the Mourning’],” she said, “And some other ones before we put out a record.” Paramore wrap their run of shows — which feature guitarist Taylor York’s brother Justin and drummer-to-the-stars Josh Freese filling in for the Farros — in early March, but there’s no word on where (or when) they plan on to record the new songs, or how they’ll release them. A spokesperson for the band’s labels, Atlantic/ Fueled By Ramen, could not be reached for comment about Paramore’s plans by press time. Are you excited to hear new music from Paramore this summer? Skylar Grey Breaks Out With Dre, Eminem Grammy Performance

Singer is in spotlight after haunting rendition of chorus on ‘I Need a Doctor.’ By Aly Semigran Skylar Grey at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merrit/ Getty Images Many Grammy viewers might have asked themselves the same question several times during Sunday night’s ceremony: Who was that? In addition to Best New Artist winner Esperanza Spalding , another woman who hit the stage of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards had plenty of viewers wondering who she was: first-time nominee and performer Skylar Grey, who took to the stage with Eminem and Dr. Dre during their intense set . As it turns out, the Wisconsin-born Grey, whose real name is Holly Brook Hafermann, already has a long hip-hop r

Paramore Say New Tour Will Be A ‘Big Party’

Hayley Williams tells MTV News newly configured band is ‘excited’ to kick off South America mini-tour. By Aly Semigran Paramore at the Grammy Awards on Sunday Photo: John Shearer Don’t cry for Paramore , Argentina. Although the pop-rock band — now two members short since the departure of Josh and Zac Farro — went home empty-handed at Sunday’s 53rd Annual Grammy Awards , they’ve got plenty to look forward to. MTV News caught up with crimson-haired lead singer Hayley Williams and the remaining band members on the Grammy red carpet and they talked about their upcoming tour in South America, which will include stops in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Lima, Peru. As it turns out, the group was wasting no time between the ceremony and hitting the road. “We leave tomorrow,” Williams told us. “We’re so excited.” The 22-year-old frontwoman revealed it’s been nearly three years since Paramore performed in South America and they plan to make up for lost time. Beginning in Brazil on February 16 and concluding on March 6 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the chart-topping rockers will play 11 shows as part of the upcoming mini-tour that Williams described as “a big party.” Guitarist Taylor York added that he was confident in how the newly configured group will fare on the road. “I don’t think we’re going to skip a beat, if anything we’ll be better,” York said. Williams also revealed that South American fans would get to experience the kind of show they’ve staged elsewhere around the globe. “It’s very similar to the Honda Civic Tour, which we …did in America, [and] we took it to Australia and England,” she explained. “So we’re just kind of giving them what they haven’t seen yet.” The tour, which follows the release of their platinum-selling Brand New Eyes album, will also mark “longest set we’ve ever put together,” according to Williams.
