For the about the past five years, it’s been nothing but bad news for the Giudice family of Real Housewives of New Jersey fame. From the moment that Teresa and Joe Giudice were found guilty of tax fraud, they knew they were in for quite a bit of pain and torment in the years to come. But the reality of their current situation likely exceeds even the worst-case scenario that the Giudices could have conjured in their imaginations. Though he’s completed his prison sentence, Joe Giudice is now facing deportation to his native Italy. While he was born in the Italian village of Serrano, Joe’s family relocated to Paterson, New Jersey when he was less than a year old. He claims to have no knowledge of his home country, and Teresa has made it clear that she will not be moving to Italy if Joe is deported. And so, nothing less than Joe’s family life and his ability to earn a living are at stake. While there was a time when it looked as though Giudice would be able to throw himself upon the mercy of the court, these days, his options are disappearing rapidly. Giudice’s first appeal was rejected, and while he’s still in the United States, it seems increasingly likely that Joe will be making an unwelcome trip across the Atlantic very soon. His teenage daughter Gia even appealed to President Trump to intervene on her father’s behalf, but the request fell on deaf ears. Now, Giudice’s lawyers are pulling out all the stops in a last-ditch effort to keep Juicy Joe stateside. According to Radar Online, the top-dollar legal team pulled off a minor victory this week by receiving an extension for Joe’s final appeal, thus delaying his deportation. Joe was originally slated to submit his appeal on July 15, but now has until July 18 to prepare his final argument. That may not sound like much of a win, but those few days could turn out to be significant, as Giudice recently attracted the support of The Immigrant Rights Clinic of Washington Square Legal Services (IRC). According to a statement issued by the IRC, the “amici curiae are demanding that they appear before the Third Circuit Court judge” in order to argue Giudice should be permitted to remain in the US. It may only be a glimmer of hope, but it’s better news than the Giudiceds have had in a long time. And we’re sure Joe is hoping this is his opportunity to turn his dire situation around. While the man is far from innocent, we wish him all the luck in the world as he battles against this cruel and unusual punishment. After all the blackface backlash , Gucci is getting groaned again — this time for selling $790 turbans that are similar in style to the dastaar (turban) worn by members of the Sikh faith. According to Washington Post , the brand originally drew ire from the Sikh community when the luxury designer had a white model walking the runway in a bright blue turban last year: It was styled nearly identically to the traditional headwear of Sikhs, who follow a faith with roots in South Asia, and outrage abounded. The Italian luxury brand was widely panned for not showing the look on “a brown model” and failing to grasp the turban’s significance. “As a Sikh, I see this as a huge sign of disrespect and disregard toward Sikhism,” one person tweeted at the time. Apparently that wasn’t enough to halt production because this week Gucci’s “Indy Full Turban” — described as a “gorgeously crafted turban” that is “ready to turn heads while keeping you in comfort as well as trademark style” — was being sold by Nordstrom for a reported price of $790. As of Wednesday evening, the item was listed as sold out on Nordstrom’s website and the price no longer appeared. The department store and Gucci did not respond to requests for comment from the Washington Post. Meanwhile there’s been a (well deserved, in our opinion) outcry from Sikhs and other critics over misappropriating an article of clothing that has religious significance and whose wearers have been attacked, discriminated against and even killed. The turban is not just an accessory to monetize; it's a religious article of faith that millions of Sikhs view as sacred. It wrote: “Many find this cultural appropriation inappropriate, since those wearing the turban just for fashion will not appreciate its deep religious significance.” There’s much more to unpack with this particular item of clothing. As you’ve likely heard by now, former Real Housewives of New Jersey star Joe Giudice is being held in an ICE detention center , where he currently awaits deportation to Italy. Giudice’s appeal was denied last week, which means it’s looking more likely than ever that he’ll be shipped off to the country where he was born, but knows very little about. Sure, Juicy Joe committed tax fraud , and it’s never a good idea to stiff the government of a country where you’re a semi-lawful visitor. Still, many believed the father of four and husband of Teresa Giudice After all, one doesn’t often see well-connected white guys who have lived in this country for most of their lives being booted out of the U.S., but it seems the judge in Joe’s case decided to adhere to the letter of the law. There’s not much that can save the 46-year-old now — outside of a presidential pardon, that is. Yes, a phone call from OG tri-state reality TV mess Donald John Trump is about the only thing that can rescue Joe from being shipped off to the Mediterranean. Seemingly aware that desperate times call for desperate measures, Joe’s 18-year-old daughter Gia Giudice has posted a petition on Change.org in which she asks readers for their electronic signature in hopes of capturing the president’s attention. Gia describes her father as “a businessman, a husband, father to four young women all under the age of 19, son, brother, uncle and friend to many” and notes that he was “found guilty of NON Violent offense.s” “He knows nothing of Italian culture, laws, societal norms, he has no immediate family and will not be able to secure work in this foreign land,” Gia writes. “My father is not a danger to society, he is a warm loving man and I beg you sign our petition to give my father a second chance at being part of our lives and giving back to the community we live in once a again.” In case it’s unclear to any of her fans, Gia outlines exactly what’s at stake: “My father is there for us in every possible way a father could be. He has always been our handyman, our confidont, our cheerleader, our challenger and most importantly our protector,” she writes. “This would rob us of my father screaming from the stands at our graduations, meeting our future husbands for the first time, of walking us down the aisle, of being there when his grandchildren come into the world.” Gia concludes with a direct plea to President Trump: “We request that our President, Donald J Trump, review our petition and pardon my father to relieve him of this life sentence the courts are bestowing on him,” she concludes. “Yes in Italy he will no longer be incarcerated but will he ever be free if kept from his family and be able to be a productive member of society?” This is not the first time that Gia has pled her father’s case , and it’s likely her last chance.
